Dog Tag by Kaiji Idobata is about a corporal and his captain and the relationship between them. I only gave this two stars because the artwork was good and the story was coherent, but the rest was just really bad. I'm not a fan of power dynamics, especially military ones because they are absolutely soldiers in real life who are manipulated by their superiors. I couldn't divorce my feelings about that from this story.
Nathan is a fairly incompetent corporal who gets lost all of the time because he can't read a map. His captain, Leon, goes to find him as he always does. Somehow Nathan falls into a river and has to be saved by Leon. While Nathan is unconscious, Leon starts a fire and dries Nathan off so he doesn't get sick. Nathan apologizes for having to be found and saved yet again and says he should just quit because he isn't a good soldier, but Leon reminds Nathan that he is great at negotiations and field work and that he knows he can get better at everything.
The story really had me up until this point. Then Leon asks Nathan why he joined and Nathan tells him he thinks Leon is super cool. This is where the story goes off the rails for me. Leon tells Nathan he's noticed him watching him since he enlisted, so Leon decides he's going to have sex with Nathan because he is certain Nathan's respect for Leon is actually love and attraction. The facial expressions for Leon get really creepy here, too, which makes me feel like the mangaka sort of knew how this story would be perceived and wanted it to be seen that way.
After they have sex and return to camp, everybody knows that Leon has claimed Nathan as his because Nathan has a visible hickey. Everybody is really gross about how they talk about Nathan being Leon's lapdog or whatever. It's meant to be seen as accepting but I really didn't like it at all. Also everybody finds out Leon has been tracking Nathan this whole time with his dog tags which has a GPS tracker he put on it.
