I wasn't a big fan of this short story. I find the "kidnapping my enemy's sister to ruin her and shame him" thing more than a little sketch. I had a hard time finding anything about this concept romantic. Gareth was too forceful with Helen, which made me uncomfortable. The whole thing felt very Stockholm Syndrome-y to me. Helen got on my nerves because she almost never stood up for herself and I really hated when she came back groveling at the end.
Very Sexy Historical Romance Novella about a twin who goes to a duel in her brother's place.
Helen's brother has gambled all their money away and is not able to pay his debts. When he is called out to a duel, Helen decides to take his place. She loves her brother enough to make the ultimate sacrifice.
But when her ruse is uncovered, Garth demands payment for her brother's debts in trade.
I was afraid I was gonna hate the hero, because he came across as a total ass in the beginning of the book. But he turned out to be a wounded hero with a hard shell, a big heart and a dirty mouth!
I enjoy reading HRs where the heroine pays back a family debt by living with the hero, knowing he will eventually bed her, fall in love with her, and wed her.
What I loved most about writing The Duelist's Seduction is that it was my first historical romance story I ever wrote. The story itself is a little bit of a tribute to the darker historical romances from the 1990s where the heroes were a bit more brooding, the heroines a little sweeter and less "sensually educated and jaded". But both Gareth and Helen are wonderful in a way. Gareth is a truly wounded hero and Helen believes more in the power of love's redemption than being a rude, snarky heroine who "shows the hero who is boss." Instead, Gareth and Helen come together under edgy circumstances, but they truly come to love and value each other which is the best part of a romance story for me.
Therefore, this story may not be for everyone. The heroine agrees to go home with the hero as part of a bargain to save her brother's life, it's a dark romance in a way, but it ends in a very sweet way, with the hero being redeemed. Fans of Dark romance will love it.
Been meaning to read more by Luren Smith and decided this series could be a fun one but I'm feeling pretty meh about it. This definitely wasn't a good romance, nothing swoony or romantic about it and the characters was not interesting to read about at all. Was more problematic than anything else
Io credo vi sia bisogno di leggere tutto, sapete? Ogni storia merita di essere ascoltata: che poi ci sia qualcuno disposto a farlo è un altro discorso. A me questo harmony è piaciuto: breve, intenso, ben scritto. Consiglio.
Such a weird story! Very contrived plot to get the heroine and hero together - yes, all romance novels feel contrived. This one was just more so. The “plot” moves quickly and doesn’t make much sense for the time period. Very little background or development of the love story. My suggestion is to skip it.
The blurb tells you about the duel so no point in doing that.
So, Gareth told Helen he would use her for his pleasure then she could leave. It doesn’t matter to me that he fell in love with her it was the cold calculating way he told her he would ruin her a couple of times that got to me. NOT my idea of a hero. Not that Helen minded too much since she was always thinking about all she wanted him to do to her. The entire story was just about desire, really. He kept promising her pleasure and giving her pleasure, without take her completely, because he wasn’t going to do that until she begged him to. He thought a lot of himself. And then at the end she came back and begged him to let her stay, that she’d be a maid, or whatever he need her to be, if he’d let her stay with him. It really was pathetic on her part.
I’m glad it was only a 3 hour short story. I don’t think I could have stood more than that, since the end made the heroine look weak and spineless. HE should have been the one to go after her and beg HER to come back to him, not the other way around. He thought too much of himself and she didn’t think enough of herself. With Helen being such a weak heroine her taking her brother’s place in the duel didn’t make a bit of sense.
There were explicit sexual scenes but no swearing.
As to the narrator: Beverley A. Crick is barely ok for me. Her male voices just don’t sound manly to me. It’s like she deepens a woman’s voice but it still sounds womanly. She reads with emotions but when the men still sounds girly it’s not good enough.
Why am I not rating this lower? Well, it's hilarious. Don't get me wrong, I don't think that was intentional, so I won't bother marking it as humour.
Read the summary and ignore the word slow where it appears. There is nothing slow about this. The duel is right there on the first page, then they rush to his home, then they cram what happens into a day or two.
Oh my God, I am still laughing when I think at the speed this 'romance' moved. So, you see why I can't punish this gem with a one-star review. It's not an okay read, but it's still funny so there's that.
Helen Banks’ brother Martin is an incorrigible gambler, and he has contracted a debt of such magnitude, that he is challenged to a duel, because he cannot pay. Helen has decided to take his place, she can shoot as well as he can, and besides she can’t see a future for herself, whereas Martin, being a man, has more opportunities. The man she has to face is Gareth Fairfax. Helen is secretly in love with Gareth, but he never noticed the wallflower that she is.
During the duel, Helen manages to hit Gareth with a bullet, it only grazes him but he bleeds quite a bit. Then he realises his opponent is a woman, and not her brother. But still, Martin’s debt must be paid back, and when Gareth asks Helen to come home with him, she accepts. She is intrigued by the sexy Gareth, even though it might mean ruination. THE DUELIST’S SEDUCTION is a fascinating story, and even though it’s a novella the character development is extremely thorough. The mood is very sensuous, very sensual, and it is of course, superbly written.
The Duelist's Seduction 'The Duelist's Seduction' by Lauren Smith is book One in the "Seduction" series. This is the story of Helen Banks and Gareth Fairfax and is a Novella with about 90 pages. Helen is a twin to a brother who keeps gambling their money away. Now he is in debit to Gareth and is set to duel at sunrise. Helen that morning knocks out her brother and locks him in his room. Helen goes and takes his place because she knows if anything happens to him as a single women along her lover is really over anyway. Gareth thinks to teach her brother a lesson by taking Helen to settle the money he is owed. But things don't go fully as Gareth had planned. "My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read."

#1 in the "Seduction" series. First published in the Anthology "Captivated by His Kiss". Fast paced, dark romance with a brooding hero and an innocent Lady, who fights a duel as her twin brother. A quick, enjoyable read! A bit unique, packed full of excitement and danger, with seduction and romance. An enjoyable and satisfying read! While, some readers may find the brooding hero a bit off-putting, I enjoyed Gareth, who,I hoped would redeem himself in the end. As for our heroine,Helen, I wanted to yell, "are you crazy", "you can't do that", but of course, she does. Her twin, what can one say, he needs a strong hand. I hope to read more of this exciting new series. An enjoyable and yes, very satisfying read. Fans if dark, brooding heroes and amazing, strong heroines will enjoy "The Duelist's Seduction". A must read!

I wasn't a fan of this story....I think I'm a little worn out on the kidnapping my enemy's sister for revenge or to repay someone's debt...it just isn't romantic to me. I can't fathom the two characters falling madly in love unless....the story is very very well written and make the story so sweet, so romantic,so compelling and engaging...which this author did not...IMO.
A beautiful love story, and well written. It's always a joy to read something written by Lauren Smith. This may be a novella, but nothing is left out, you get a complete, beautiful romance story. I very much enjoyed reading this book, and highly recommend it to all.
Wow! The Duelist Seduction was Lauren Smith’s first story! This writer never fails to delight her readership with well-developed characters and emotional, engaging dialog. With smoking hot sensuality, a dash of angst and a happy ending you cannot go wrong with this novella.
Ridiculous plot that could have worked if not for main characters, h was all 'I'll never sell my body' and then does so next heartbeat. But it's okay because she can dress pretty now. Hero buys her, sleeps with her, dresses her up, then discards her because.... Love.
I started all these novellas because I didn't have time for full novels but it's not working for me 😅
Ms. Helen Banks dresses herself as her twin brother in order to save his life. The morning of the duel she somehow locks him up because she was afraid if he was the one attending the duel and was killed, she'd end up in a workhouse or on the streets. However, once the cold-hearted and offended Mr. Fairfax realizes the ruse, he proposes the last thing she'd have guessed he would propose… or that she'd accept. This one had me confused at the beginning. Helen doesn't want her brother dead because she doesn't want to end in a brothel or on the streets selling her body but instead agrees to be Mr. Fairfax’s mistress so he can forgive the debt? Supposedly, no one would know about the agreement but she'd know about it, and once her brother found out then he'd probably ask for another duel, which would probably had the same outcome as her original fear which in turn would make the whole world know about it. The storyline right here feels forced as she wants one thing but her actions say something completely different. Granted, it is explained she’s always been attracted to Fairfax and has curiosity about his rumored libidinous behavior however (and although she’s a bit hesitant) she still accepts the proposal exceedingly willingly. The plot in itself is good; it’s just that her actions sounded a little contradictory. As the story progresses, we see another side of Fairfax, a warmer and loving side and we come to find out the reasons of his sometimes harsh and rude behavior. Once I got past the beginning, I actually liked the chemistry between the H and h. The romance didn't feel rushed or forced and it even felt tender at times, as if they had been friends for a long time. I just wish the story would have flowed with more consistency from start to finish.
**I read this story as part of the Captivated by His Kiss box set which was gifted to me by one of the authors in exchange for an honest review**
Since her parents are deceased, Helen Banks has been doing everything she possibly can to keep her twin brother from gambling away what little money they have; unfortunately, he’s loss one too many times to Gareth Fairfax. Helen has secretly been watching Gareth at every event they’ve both attended. Now, she must protect her brother from being mortally wounded as Gareth has called him out for a duel. Helen knows in this day and age, a man stands a better chance than a woman at making it on their own, so she makes sure he can’t attend and shows up dressed as Martin.
Gareth lost his childhood sweetheart and wife along with his child too soon into their marriage that it has made him very cold hearted. He is rumored to have been with many women since but in reality, he knows no one will replace his wife.
When Helen fires, she has never shot a gun before, and hits Gareth in the shoulder, her disguise it up! He is hit a little more than a graze but not enough to be able to restrain the feisty Helen. Gareth decides to offer her a solution to their dilemma. If she will come home with him, he will forget all of Martin’s debts owed to him but if not, he will find her brother and finish what they started with the duel.
Helen’s stay at Gareth’s home turns into a well calculated seduction. The more time they spend together, the more Helen learns what has made Gareth the man he is and it only leads her to fall more deeply in love with him. Gareth feels he is not good enough for Helen but knows its spinsterhood or him and yes, he wants to marry her. Unfortunately, when Gareth’s friend, Ambrose, shows up and explains all the reasons why he can’t marry her, Helen overhears the conversation and decides it’s time to go. Will Gareth realize his mistake before it’s too late or will Helen come back to the man who has given her a place to call home? I voluntarily read an ARC and would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical romance.
The characters are flawed and moody, introspective and caring. Of course they try to hide that at first. Our hero and heroine meet on a field for a duel. He has no idea the man in breeches is not Martin Banks. It is his twin sister, Helen, dressed in Martins clothes. She is doing what she can to save Martins life and pay his debt of honor. And 200£. Her father has recently passed and her brother thinks he can win their fortune but he is no good at the gaming tables and has pushed them further into poverty. The man holding Martin Banks debt is Gareth Fairfax. He is a gambler and a gentleman who has known great loss. He does not want to hurt Martin, but he needs to make him aware that you can not run up debt that you can not pay. When the person he believes to be Martin Banks turns and fires his pistol, Gareth is injured, if only slightly. “Martin” rushes to make sure the man is OK, giving away the fact that it is a woman. Feeling like he has been misled, Mr. Fairfax decides there is more owed to him.
Helen Banks is rooted of being hungry and tired of her brother eating money they do not have. She goes to his morning duel hoping to pay his debt of honor and be fine with it. Unfortunately, the man at the other end of the pistol is none other than the man she had secretly been watching at balls and parties. He is handsome and every woman wants to be on his arm. Why did it have to be him?
The story goes being romance, it goes into old pain, new hope and a great housekeeper! I really loved this book. I love the way Ms. Smith wrote the housekeeper into the plot. The writing is wonderful, the characters complex and interesting. I would highly recommend this book to romance lovers. It is never easy, but nothing worth it every is!
