A throughly underwhelming end to a saga that began with such promise.

Volume one was a fantastic portrait of an empire beisiged. From a previously known enemy showing unseen, and terrifying advances.
To the more insidious threat of corruption dismantling the mechanisms by which the empire could save its self

A fantastic start

The 2nd volume while having high points devolved into bolter porn and space marine worship.

This volume got even worse.

Its first book is about 3 instances of the same tale

They form the death watch. The deathwatch is clearly the coolest thing ever you guys, they engage in a pretty generic adventure where 5 dudes with names out perform whole companies.

Then the do it again. Only it's opening and ending chapters carry weight.

The 2nd book is the imperium deciding to have another crack at the beast with a new tactic... and failing.

The 3rd book? Well it's the 2nd book again but with a worse idea, and somehow more success.

Utterly pointless splitting these in two.

The final book starts strong. With a return to the politics and tonnes of high stakes.

Then literally we time skip all the foreshadowed and interesting plot points laid out are skipped over. Out main protagonist has had the hinted heel turn, entirely off camera.

But it's OK

The space marines get to save the day.

The super advanced orks who in book one were able to bring the imperium to it's knees get beaten and mulch in every chapter.

The fascinating beast character who was developing into a fascinating villian. Turns into a half baked boss who gets beaten by a lucky stab and a tactic, HE HAD ALREADY STOPPED IN THE PRIOR, FAILED , POINTLESS INVASION.
Honestly. I don't know what happened in the editorial office. But this frankly was a bit of a shambles.

honestly .... unless you've a desperate need for more space marine circle jerking , sack this off.

And if you want more of that I suspect there are more enjoyable examples.
