The Royal Shifters #2

Her Highlander

Rate this book
Three gorgeous shifters. A queen on the run. One thrilling Scottish adventure.

***SPOILERS – DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU’VE FINISHED BOOK ONE***

The king is dead, I’ve run away from my throne, and my new husband is hunting me down.

My name is Annalise, and I am a runaway queen. But I’m not abandoning my people.

I’ve just found out that I’m the supposed key to unleashing a dark magic upon the world…and I’ve learned this from my pet leopards nonetheless. I’d try to explain, but I don’t think that will make things any less confusing.

Now, I must journey to Scotland with three massive, and ridiculously beautiful, shifters in tow to try to convince Roan’s kin to help us defeat my husband. I have a lot to learn and long ways to go. I don’t know how I’m going to do it, but I am determined to make it with the help of Li, Ero…and Roan.

Roan.

My green-eyed leopard.

My redheaded lover.

My highlander.

HER HIGHLANDER is a full-length slow-burn reverse-harem fantasy novel and the second in the Royal Shifters series.

This is the second story in the The Royal Shifters series. You should read these stories in order so you can follow along on who has done what and where they are going or gone so far on their journey to stop evil from ruling the Earth. The characters are fantastic and diverse. I think it is great that each character is from a different country, some are at war with each other, some are indifferent to each other.

In this story, they are going to Scotland first to try to rise an army to go back to get Annalise's country back from her evil husband(?). When they finally get to Roan's home, his younger sister and her husband are Laird. They realize that it is over 40 years since he was there. The Scottish and the fae had an agreement that as long as a male blood relative of Roan's father is Laird, they will have great harvests and plenty of everything. Since that line died out many years ago, their Clain has been starving out. When Roan comes back to ask for help, his sister makes him prove that it is him and not an imposter. He must go through the fae forest. If he who he claims, the fae will not harm him. When he shows back up sooner than expected from the forest, he then tells his sister that he is now married to Annalise by the fae. They try to come up with ways that he must marry someone else, but with the pledge given to the fae, he will dedicate his life to Annalise and be faithful only unto her. To break a vow given to the fae is worse than death. So they figure out a way that they allow them to marry, yet allow Annalise to remain a virgin, to keep the curse from starting. They also promise that they will get the Vikings to stop raiding their lands, which happens quite often during those days. They get agreements that if they can get the Vikings to stop raiding them, that they will get a force together to help retrieve Annalise's country.

Oh, Damien tries his trick to get them to start the curse or at least to hinder them being successful in gathering a force against him.

Adventurous
In this second book of The Royal Shifters series, we get a deep look into Roan’s character and background as they all journey to Scotland in hope of building their army to defeat Damien and win back Annalise’s kingdom, the road is far from easy and Annalise’s character has to adapt and evolve to the new world around her, of course she is naive as she has spent her whole life stuck in her castle and was shut off to the world, I do like how her character slowly starts to develop while still being chased by evil.
Oh, I love this series so much, filled with action, romance, jealousy and bickering that still makes me giggle and love each of the men, damn, these shifters are something else … hot, strong and royalty by their own right. A step into the Fae realm (wish we had more time there) and challenges that keep you on your toes every step of the way. At this point in the series the guys don’t like the idea of sharing which makes that more of an interesting and captivating read. Nothing ever goes as planned and twists seem to spring up at every corner. This is a page turned and loving every second!! It is still slow burn, due to her being the key to unleash the dark magic, but enjoying the changing dynamic between them all, cliff hanger… damit, so bring on Book 3 … as they head to parts unknown.

Roan is the first of our snow leopards to head home to try to pull together an army to help in the fight against Damien. Once the group gets to his home, they are brought before the laird. The laird turns out to be his brother in law. They find out that the Fae have been causing issues with their harvests, animals, etc. since there is no living male heir to the Clan Artair. In order to prove he is this heir, he's forced to walk to thru the land of the Fae. Roan insists on taking Annalise with him. Once past the portal, they are met by one of the Fae and taken to the High Court. As the Clan Artair heir, he has safe passage, but there are only 2 options for Annalise. She can remain a part of the Fae Court until the end of her human life or she can marry Roan in a Fae ceremony. She chooses the ceremony in order to get back to the others and to save her people and kingdom. Together Roan and Annalise must get the approval of his claim to be married & become the true laird & lady, but the wedding night has to witnessed. How do you prove you are no longer a maiden when there's a threat from Damien & you can't actually consummate the marriage?

This one gives you a snippet of the backstory of Roan at the very beginning. I thought there could have been a bit more about what brought Roan to Damien's attention, which is why I rated it at 4 stars. Book 2 also ends in a cliffhanger.

Better Than the First

I have some issues with the first book of this series, but I always give an author another try or two to see if he or she can still impress me. While I'm not fully there yet with this author, she has come up in my estimation. One of my pet peeves about the first novel of this series was that the heroine seemed more like a petulant teenager than a princess preparing to wed. In this book, she is gaining in maturity, but she still has naivete about the world. I enjoyed the slow-burn romantic aspect of this book and the rivalries between the guardians as they try to figure out all that their relationships should be. I enjoyed the Scottish flavor of this particular installment. The book did feel repetitive in parts; it could have used a good editor. All in all, I enjoyed this portion of the saga and am looking forward to the next.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Once the King is dead Annalise discovers she is key to unleashing dark magic upon the world and so after a sham marriage she runs away with three very beautiful shifters (Roan, Li and Ero) to Scotland and Roan's clan to try to get an army to get her kingdom back.

This contains some very dramatic moments that showed Annalise learning of the world outside her rather limited upbringing and having lots of adventures with her constant protectors. I loved the slightly fractious relationship between the three shifters and their unwavering devotion to Annalise. There were parts of the story that got a little monotonous where the same bit was told more than once from a different point of view but overall it was a very nice story to read. Clear and well written it was easy to understand as long as you can tolerate the occasional repetition. This is a very slow burn reverse harem series.

Annalise is forced to marry Damien. Right in the middle of the ceremony, her father dies. Luckily, her and her three protectors, Li, Eros, and Roan, are on the run. Annalise still has an overabundance of innocence where the real world is concerned. She's having to face it and learn through hard lessons quickly with Damien on their trail. The plan is to build three separate armies and bring them together in order to defeat Lord Damien. One from Ero's Viking line in Norway, one from Li's Chinese line and one from Roan's Scottish line. First stop, the Highlands of Scotland and whatever adventure and magic it holds. Ready to find out what happens next? Don't miss book two, "Her Highlander". Congratulations to Alice Wilde for a job well done.

Annalise and her three protectors, Roan, Li and Ero are on the run from the man who married her unwillingly and then killed her father to take the crown. They are tired and hungry but continue on to get away from Damien. They are on their way to Scotland. Two problems crop up--one is that Annalise finds herself drawn to her three protectors and they to her. The second is that Damien isn;t giving up. Annalise is trying to figure out if she can have all three of her protectors of if she will have to choose. Danger is always near and luck doesn;t seem to be on either of their sides.
Journey with these four people as they go through emotional and physical dangers that will either make them all stronger or break them.
Fantastic story and read!!

In this part of the series "the royal shifters", you get to know Roan and his origins better. As a Highlander, he returns to his clan. The journey there is not without danger, and once home, his sister does not believe he is who he says and challenges him to go through the forest of the Fae to prove that he is the Artair's last male heir. To prevent Annalise from spending a night in the dungeons, he takes her with her. To offer her a safe transition, he must marry her before the eyes of the Fae. Once back with his clan, he also wants to marry her with the customs of Scotland. Ero and Li are still trying to protect Annalise, also from Roan if necessary. Her virginity must remain intact, but will that succeed when Scottish custom says that they should make love with witnesses there?

This is the second book in the Royal Shifters series. If you haven’t read the first book in the series, I recommend you start there. In this book, Annelise is forced to marry Damien who is basically a terrible person. To top it off, her father dies during the ceremony and she ends up fleeing with her 3 leopard shifters to Scotland to try and find allies in the fight against her husband. This book is better than the first one! There’s lots of action and suspense in this story. And of course there are the 3 sexy shifters. Annelise is starting to grow up and I feel like she’ll be an excellent queen when she does.

This is the 2nd book in the series. These books should be read in order so you can understand what is going on in each. There are cliffhangers. I was able to read them all one after the other so did not have to wait for the next book. They were a slow read for me took me a bit to get into the stories. There is actions and twist/turns, adventure. There are a lot of emotions in these books. This one needed more editing had to read some lines 2/3 times to understand. This one is about Roan background as they go to Scotland.

Is a great shifter magic romance. And is starting to be a great adventure too. Three forced man who became leopard shifters and a princess who is on the run from a mad power hungry mage king. Who by right is her lawful husband... an abusive husband at that. Who with the help of a another aid killed her father with poison. But how can she prove it when no one will listen to her, not even her father who was alive before the ceremony.
Getting away from Damien is no small feat. And it seems somehow he is on their trail no matter where they go. And no one can save them either. Will their plan to get Scottland behind them work? Or will it be all for naught?

The beginning of an epic quest!
“Her Highlander” is book 2 of “The Royal Shifters” series and carries on seamlessly from book one. It is well written, original and storyline are well developed. The world-building and descriptions of the Fae Realm are stunning and the main characters individual personalities shine thanks to Alice Wilde’s creative writing skills. “Her Highlander” is action-packed and had plenty of suspense, intrigue, emotion, hot chemistry and romance. Can’t wait to start on book 3! I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Her Highlander by Alice Wilde is the second book in The Royal Shifters series. This book begins as Princess Annalise, Roan, Ero, and Li travel across France and are being chased by Annalise’s diabolical husband Damien. The group plans to travel to Roan’s Clan in Scotland to get help. This book is full of adventure and dangerous situations that the group keeps encountering. It was such an exciting read I couldn’t put it down. This is an entertaining read for anyone who enjoys a slow build romance involving multiple men. Her Highlander is a slow burn romance with lots of adventure.

I am hooked! I love Annalise and her snow leopard protectors: Li, Roan and Ero. We learn more about Roan in this book, her Scottish, red headed shifter. The group is trying to reach Roan's homeland to gather troops to fight the evil following close behind them. There is a lot of danger as Damien, Annalise's unfortunate husband, is killing people Annalise comes to care for along the way. I can't wait to read more in this series, especially to learn more about Li and Ero, Annalise herself, and see romance grow between them all more and more.

This book has so much going on. An epic quest across country, shipwrecked, bandits, and fae! The world building and descriptions of the Fae Realm are stunning and I wish we could have seen more of it there but of course the characters have an army to amass and politics to play with family. Love how we are getting to see more of each of the men’s personalities and how they interact with each other.

I had hoped that by the second book, the plot would advance toward something but it seems that is not the case. There is no advancement in relationships or on character development. It feels like the whole plot of the book is just them running from Damien to Scotland. I really hope it picks up on the third book because despite the good start it may not carry me to the end.

A captivating read filled with adventure, romance, and action. 'Her Highlander is, of course, set in Scotland and is full of hunk men - all vying for the affections of one woman.
It may not be the most original, but it is still a fun and entertaining read. I was able to get through it from start to finish without missing a beat, Definitely recommended if you love reverse harem stories.
