At the end of the last book, the kids were taken to the hatchery and allowed to find the egg that calls out to them as it hatches. Eist managed to find hers, but it is smaller than the others, and it doesn’t look like any known type. She figures it might be a copper dragon and it’s bottom half has been charred by the lightning strike, but the medics find her dragon very fascinating each time she brings it in for a checkup. She names her dragon Fior and learns to feed it, takes it to her classes, lets it sleep in her room, and tries to help it learn to fly. She also takes it along with her to the infirmary each time she visits her grandfather who is still in green dragon gas induced coma after the accident in the previous book. The bullying by Ain escalates and she finds someone has a possible crush on her.
I will say that the current price this is at is a bit pricy for a book just a hundred pages long. (Usually books that size are priced at a dollar). I bought the box set of this a while ago (for a good sale price) and just got around to reading the first book. Usually I move from one book collection to the next and only reading one book in the collection at a time. Yeah, well, as soon as I finished reading the first book in this series, I didn’t wait to start in on this one. And I’m not planning to wait on the next book either. I thought this section was better than the last book. I loved Fior, Eist’s dragon. I’m not really interested in dragons, though I am a fantasy fan, but the idea of raising dragons as babies from eggs is such a fun idea. There is so much imagination into the awkwardness of baby dragons. From Yacrist’s dragon constantly getting the necks of his two-headed dragon constantly knotted, to Fior having to mash all of his food in a messy paste. I loved Fior being an escape artist and a hoarder, and Eist having to return all the pilfered items in the morning. And I loved that Fior kept gaining new tricks and surprises, keeping me as a reader on my toes. I also liked that we finally got a resolution to her being bullied by Ain since I was picturing violence happening later in years when the kids gain more maturity. Right now they all seem still relatively young (think like the second Harry Potter book). I liked Eist herself better in this installment, maybe because she wasn’t crowing in her mind about how she was better than everyone else around her. I liked that rather than thinking of herself, she was thinking more of her dragon and understanding him.
This is a great quick read of the series. With her friendship growing amongst her fellow student, the dragons, fire and grandpa. She has slot to deal with .
“Awakened”, second in the 'Brindle Dragon' series, doesn't really work as a stand-alone novel. In the prequel, 'Dragon Rider', we were introduced to the Blight, now it is Eist's turn (even if she is mostly unaware). The book is largely taken up with the shenanigans, and unusual talents, of her fledgling dragon, Fior. There's also her mixed, and constantly changing, feelings about Yacrist. Not forgetting her tormentor, Ain. Outside of general chitchat the main plot concerns Eist and her grandfather. After the fire in which he was badly burned he has been heavily sedated for a month and Eist is worried enough to conduct her own research. A book about magic (which is not supposed to exist but is banned anyway) appears (as if by magic?) and confirms her worries. “Awakened” is similar in format to the previous books in that it only really comes to life towards the end - the rest is readable chaff. 3 Stars.
This is book #2 of the Brindle Dragon series. This one is even shorter than book #1 and just as easy to read through. Our protagonist Eist is finally imprinted by a little dragon who survived the lightning strike and fire in the hatchery. This dragon is very small, much smaller than the others hatching at the same time, and has no defined color. He is black, brown and copper and Eist loves him on sight, which is supposed to happen when you are chosen. She has another run-in with the school bully, but this time her dragon defends her physically. He also shows that he has an affinity for sound that manipulates Eist's enemies. The characters are becoming better drawn and more defined as they grow. I enjoyed the fast reading.
Ok...I succumbed...ending the first book and starting the second one was just like turning a page in the same book. I can see that, if I want to read something else for the next few weeks, I'm going to have to go cold turkey and just shut down this book. The characters got way more interesting in book 2, with lots more action, including some dark stuff. This is a thoroughly enjoyable read and I'm a total fan! I do recommend this to anyone who loves dragons (Fior is totally adorable, not to mention he has some badass moves that no one, even Eist, realizes yet. I'm already 56% into book 3! AND...in the first half of Book 3, I've figured out what sort of dragon Fior is!!! (But, not telling...spoilers!)
Summary: Simple coming of age type book, potential for better things so I'll keep going in this series, not sure about dragons. We'll see. Some of the characters are a bit 2 dimensional. Book 2 continues the theme, a bit more on magic and the blight
Plotline: Very simple plot for this first, very short, book. Ditto book2
Premise: Dragons. Magic and the blight...
Writing: Simple, descriptive, light
Ending: Well highly predictable, title gives it away really.
Eist is learning about her new dragon who is as unique as she. He's very small compared to other dragons, but also has a few surprises up his paw that nobody suspects. While researching the gas that the healers are using to keep her grandfather asleep, she discovers that one of the healers has plans that are not in keeping with the traditional roles of the healers at the dragon academy.
While this is a very short story, it's one of the few really enjoyable ones of this length that I completely enjoyed.
Love how the Author played Eist issues, it wasn’t the main focus. It was just something she had to learn to deal with. She didn’t make a big thing out of it. Also loved how the other characters just accepted that part about her and moved on. It wasn’t a big deal.
It great to see her develop more, see her becoming what she had always dreamed of becoming.

Awakened is a rock-solid second offering in Fisher's Brindle Dragon series. It gives just the sort of primary and secondary character development the story needed, and continues to develop setting with a bit more detail. Enjoyably, Fisher offers just enough to advance all those key elements while leaving plenty to tantalize and make you look forward to the next installment with heightened anticipation.
The second in the series, of the Bronze Dragon and his rider.
This picks up right were book 1left off. Eist grandfather still being kept under a drugged sleep, and her life being made more difficult by Fior sneaking out and bring back things he likes, luring in the background waiting is Anh. Read to find out how Eist almost died , her grandfather wakes and Anh is almost sent to the farm.
I know this series is tailored toward young adults, but like the Harry Potter series, it completely captures the interest of adults as well. I will read this entire existing series, then hope for follow-on books. Thank you for writing this enchanting series and your other books, which I will be checking out. Also, thank you for keeping it clean from foul language and innuendos, unlike some your regrettable, and now forgettable compatriots.
I can't wait to see how the Brindle Dragon's gifts show themselves. I am so into the story it is like my family and I want to get the information right now. The writing is smooth and keeps you involved as the story moves from danger to danger, with a response which holds your interest.
I knew I shouldn’t have started the first book. I thought, it is short, soon over. Except it didn’t tell me the color of the dragon, so I said just one more. Horrors, how long is this series because I am entangled. No help now but to just enjoy the unfolding and root for the brindle pair!
What a little fighter Fior has turned out to be. Full of abilities that will need to be checked out. Eist is sure that something is wrong, her Grandfather is being keep asleep by Green Dragon Gas, she wants him to wake up. What she finds nearly costs her more than she expected. Highly recommend.
Amazing this series just gets better and better. So glad I picked it up . Can’t wait to read the next one. Brilliant read for anyone who knows someone or is someone looked at as less than for any reason. You are not less ever and this book shows you why you are a gifted individual no matter what.
Another fun adventure. The characters are more beloved to me, the plot is straightforward, and the premise is finding out the proper feed and care for her unusual dragon and finding out why her grandfather was being kept asleep for so long. The answers are strange indeed. I definitely highly recommend this book and the first one.
Really good read just wish all the books where our hate reading a book and can't finish series. I read a lot so sometimes I forget that a Need One is coming out when I have to wait
I've been reading books about dragons for the last thirty years and lately they have been getting better than the years before. This author is comparable to Anne McCaffrey and Jane Tokens series. I would put her up against Dragon School and Dragons Mage Academy.
I really think I would go crazy if I couldn't read. This book just left me wanting more.I am a avid reader. When I find an author who , can really write.I hang on.These books deserve a higher rating..I just get these books. If you read them you will see.
This book series just keeps better. I am getting ready to read the third book. It has dragons which I love and a young disadvantaged girl who shows that she is capable of anything she wants to do.
Rather good but short. This book like the series Are in short stories. The book is well written and fun but just when you get fun.. Next book. The main plot arc is slowly peaking out now so off to the next.
In book 1, Eist's challenges all seem too abruptly overcome. In this one, some true evil and long-term difficulties weave their way in making it a more compelling story. Will move on to the third book!
I have finished the first two books in the series. So far it is very good. Interesting characters. A feisty main character who is not the raving beauty type. I love the brindle dragon and his interesting attributes too.
Following Eist and her newly hatched dragon, "Fior" at the Dragon Academy. I'm loving these stories. The writing is wonderful and things are starting to happen and some of those things are not good, possibly evil! Very entertaining and I'm ready for book #3.
Story is exceptionally created. I enjoyed the characters very much. There are a few instances of words that do not fit. Fractal, being one instance where fractured would have fit much better.
Awesome! Eist finally gets to meet her dragon. And he is perfectly imperfect, just like her. Raising a dragon isn’t easy, but it is never boring! And don’t forget about school work, bullies, her grandfather, and inadvertently uncovering evil. No wonder she’s always tired. Bring on book 3!
This is a really good series. I know the target audience is teens 13 and up but I'm 65 and loving it. I already bought it for my oldest granddaughter for her birthday tomorrow and I hope she enjoys it as much as I am. I highly recommend this book.
This book is developing characters and they are getting into intriguing messes! Looking forward to the next one! But will have to wait until tomorrow as it almost 200am and 630 comes early !
The author pulls you into the story and won't let go until you reach the end of the book! Little surprises keep popping up when you least expect them!! Next book!! 😄
I enjoyed this next book of Eist and her baby dragon Fior, and their adventures at the Academy !! Lots going on and a little mystery to solve !! Of COURSE, there is a sort big cliff hanger, I suppose you could say. Very sweet, easy read !!
