My whole life, I've known there's something different about me. I didn't realize how different until four guys show up all claiming that they are destined to be my mates. They’re not human, and they say I’m not either. But if I’m not human then what am I? Now I’m forced to go to a school where I don’t belong and am reminded of it everyday. Creatures I never imagined were real that used to give me nightmares are everywhere I turn. The world that once existed is gone. Will anything ever be like it was again?
Different is the first book in the Shifter Academy Series, an RH series.
I'm Scarlett Haven. I write YA and NA books and I write a lot. My books are a fun mixture of romance, mystery, and now some paranormal too!
Besides writing, I also love to read anything I can get my hands on and I'm always drawn to the villain of the story. I am 29 years old and am married to the love of my life.
Now I like reverse harem books.. and sometimes I might even love them. However, sometimes... I just find one every now and then.. that doesn't click with me. This was it and I really wanted to like it!
In Different, you will meet Penelope. It was a bit different since she already knew that she was going to have 4 mates.. instead of the usual reverse harems. I will admit, I was intrigued by this. So while waiting for things to play out.. I was just kind of getting bored. I was hoping that the overall pace (whether it was story or romance related) would be a lot faster than your typical RH book. However, it felt the complete opposite for me which kind of made me disappointed.
Besides Penelope, who was cute but a bit naïve towards things, the guys were cute and adorable. I don't necessarily have a favorite right now but maybe I will when I dive into the next book. Here's to hoping that the pace will be a bit better.
I was so happy when I found out that Scarlett was writing another Reverse Harem series! This book is a great beggining to a series that has a lot to offer! Penelope is a girl that always felt different from her family because of her different features and from everyone around her with her ability. Her whole wold changes when she meets her four mates. I'm really looking forward for book two!
Okay fans of Scarlett's work of the Zara Chronicles, East Raven Academy and The Spy Chronicles will definitely enjoy this new shifter series from her. Set in the same tone and YA as the other series, however Different is set in a faster pace on romance, because Penelope knows she has four mates, and she has feelings back for them. However I do feel this will still be a slower pace on the romance front, so we get to enjoy the story and the characters development better.
Penelope, bless her heart is young at 17 almost 18, she has kept herself from touching people because of her gift. She has never had any boyfriends, is shy, and has always had siblings to watch over her. I am looking forward to seeing her grow as a character and into who she is meant to be. Liam, Alpha, he is protective by nature, but since stumbling upon Penelope he is even more so. He definitely has that Alpha trait and is quickly my favorite. The other three Aiden, Cole and Parker, are also wolf shifters and are behind Liam in the hierarchy with Cole as Beta and Parker third with Cole fourth in command. They are destined to be the leaders, and they all share one mate.
I found the story itself different and fun. I like the idea of a young girl knowing she is different and going on a journey to find out who and what she is. And of course it doesn't hurt to have four hot guys to help her along the way. Fans of YA RH Paranormal will enjoy this beginning of a new series just as much as I did.
So first things first let’s talk about the creepy stalker tendencies and severe Stockholm syndrome. It is not ok to literally stalk someone for weeks because you just know they are your mate. And then to literally tranquilize them and kidnap them?! What on earth is going on there?! Add to that, the mc, Penelope, falls in what can only be termed as “insta love” with 4 guys. She even talks about how her heart is being pulled in 4 different directions. Girl, I might believe you if you’d known them for a while, but Penelope BARELY knew them. She also starts making general assessments like “he’s never like that” after knowing them for a few days. How does Penelope know he’s never like that?!? Hmmmmm???? The “alpha” is ridiculously controlling and Penelope keeps switching between being defiant and compliant. Pick a trait and stick with it, switching back and for makes your character seem wishy washy and weak. Speaking of, there isn’t really much to say bout the leading men, we don’t get much character development off of them. It’s kinda of sad, as one point it’s like the author was trying to spell it out instead of introducing the reader gradually and letting them get to know the characters. Also, Penelope is 17. Bombshells keep getting dropped on this girl. And she keeps just kind of rolling along. She was kidnapped from her family, taken to a school, told that magic is real, told that she was the soulmate to 4 guys, told that she’s adopted, and then almost killed but not really and her killers took the time to carve a damn word into her arm. And not even one that’s like magical or something. Just a word. The premise of the book isn’t a bad one. But there are some pretty major flaws.
I really enjoyed the first book in this Reverse Harem series. I loved this concept and how everything meshed together. The relationship progressed slow but was well developed. I can’t wait to read book two! Five glittery stars!
I should've checked up on the author before reading this crap, it's as bad as the stolen ideas in the Zara books. This plot was the same as a hundred other tween series but worse. There was crap for world building, absolutely no character development and no relationships beyond insta mating. The guys are straight up kidnappers who mentally violate Penelope and refuse to teach her to keep them out. Penelope decides that the insta mating means she should let criminals run her life. Margot knows the truth about Penelope and hides it for no reason....seriously? Throughout all of it, Penelope is this vapid little Mary Sue who is honestly TSTL. This author is going to the top of my "Never Again" list.
I really like the theme/tempo of this new series we don't deal with bad boy or F*** boy mates and a nice change to have our MC come from a loving family . It's more based on what she is which I have a guess but I have no problem going along for the ride . Heck maybe her first female friend can be a dragon? I am a fan of Scarlett Haven series so this was a surprise for her to write a paranormal.im glad
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I enjoyed book one of this series. It was an okay introduction. There were interesting hints at different things about people’s powers/the world. It was quite short, with no real world building. Fair warning, though: book two goes downhill fast. I wouldn’t recommend this series if you’re looking for an interesting supernatural world, academy series, or a good reverse harem book. 3 stars.
This book was so much more than U thought it would be. I love Penelope as a character. Even with everything she is going through; I can identify with the self doubt she has from when I was that age. Liam, Aiden, Cole and Parker are awesomely protective. I cannot wait to find out more about Penelope
When I was reading the first chapter I was a little hesitant, but now I’m hooked!! Loving the paranormal aspects of this series. Penelope is finally getting answers to why she’s always been different. Plus the boys in her life *swoon*. Can’t wait to read the next book and see what she has planned for Penelope!
Tiny Penelope just makes you want to hug her (not a good idea though) and the guys are so amazingly nice. I'm curious about her other half, especially considering she's still gaining powers. Looking forward to book 2!
Queen Penelope, A.F.K. ... No, wait this isn't Penny from The Big Bang Theory playing Age of Conan lol. This story is about little Penelope, a, well, she doesn't know what, being raised among humans. For 17, almost 18 years, Penelope has avoided touching others because she sees things she shouldn't. Thoughts, feelings, personal history, everything is open to her. Believing herself to be human with a special gift is one thing. Being discovered by 4 supernaturals and being called their mate is something totally different. Because as weird as her life has been she's never changed shape. But her life is about to change drastically.
Spoilers ahead. Ok, as a fellow munchkin I love when the FMC is short. It presents a different challenge to the character and to see it fleshed out in other settings is fun. That part I liked. Her mysterious background and the eyes, too. Things I didn't like: *Being kidnapped by teenagers? Really? *Insta-love. *Instant capitulation on the shared mate thing when wolves are supposed to be very possessive. *Instant forgiveness for said kidnapping when she's supposed to be so close to her family, and yet is suddenly ok with very few visitations. *Her constant self depreciative monologues after a single instant. *No Dean of a school is going to allow a student, no matter her social standing, to call her by her first name. Nope. *No background on what other schools the shifters attend since this is apparently only a high school. *Only people living under rocks have no clue what an alpha is. This girl reads and watches TV and movies. *Vampires and witches are mentioned but only briefly. Do they attend different schools? If so, wouldn't more investigating have been done since Penelope isn't a shifter? To make sure she went to the proper school instead of just being lumped in with her mates? Her abilities are very different and shifter classes wouldn't apply to her. Makes no sense to me.
There's a lot of world building left undone here. Shifter stories are a dime a dozen and to really stand out the author needs to invest in their worlds and characters. I think some more background, a little bit more on the shifter world she's dropped into (she's in shifter history classes, stick it there), a little editing to fix a handful of typos and a dash more realism (ironic for a fictional work, I know, but come on, some things toed the line of ridiculousness here) and this could be a pretty exciting series.
Ok so I'm only about 35% through the book, but I've got some serious Beef about how the guys treat their "mate". First off they don't even ask if she wants to move or ask what SHE wants. They demand she leave and when she stands up for herself and says NO they drug and kidnap her!! And then after she has repeatedly told them not to touch her because she DOESN'T LIKE TO BE TOUCHED, one of them touched her anyways!!! it was meant to be a comforting touch, nothing sexual, but no means no. And it came with "consequences" for HER. This simple touch opens up a mental link where he can hear her every thought. Every last one. And instead of teaching her how to block her thoughts from him so she can have privacy (like he can block his thoughts from her) he BROADCASTS HER PRIVATE THOUGHTS TO THE OTHER 3 GUYS which is a huge breach of privacy and consent. These guys don't give a rat's a** about her wants and needs and it's not ok for guys to treat girls that way. Yet the girl keeps going on and on about how this "magical connection" makes her trust the guys... Seriously!?! Really disappointed in how this was written and the fact that the author portrayed her characters this way. Not even sure if I even want to pick the book back up to finish it at this point. The storyline is so basic I've read it a thousand times. The one good thing I haven't read before is the MCs "abilities" I am slightly curious as to what type of supernatural she is.
But let's recap on how the guys treat her..
1. stalking her 2. they drug and kidnap her 3. isolate her from her family and friends 4. She's never alone. They control her!!!! 5. Touch her without consent 6. read her thoughts and refuse to teach her how to block them because they like knowing what she is thinking and feeling just in case she won't tell them when they ask. But they never really ask either.
This is a toxic, abusive relationship and it's not normal. Don't romanticize this!!!!!
The story seems to barely introduce and scratch the surface of this world.
The foreshadowing is a little heavy, it's been obvious to me since early on exactly what Penelope is and if the reveal in following books turns out differently I'd be shocked. That said, I'm not putting my thoughts on that here on the off chance another reader missed the heavy foreshadowing.
Most of the book is the crazy thoughts in Penelope's head, parts of the story where she actually interacts with other people in the world just seem to be rushed and short. Granted she's an interesting character whose easy to relate but the story could really use more extended action sequences. All of the external conflicts just seem like background noise to the overwhelming thoughts in her head.
The relationship plays on the fate card to jump to instalove at least on the part of the male leads and honestly the four of them have such little page time they seem more like secondary characters. The potential is there but everything outside of Penelope's thoughts just needs more.
I'm also not a big fan of the power balance in the relationship, for all they claim otherwise they control her. She said no to coming with them so they kidnapped her. They're in her head but don't allow her in theirs or give her the ability to have her own privacy. The balance of the relationship at this point is seriously uncomfortable for me and I'm hoping that changes.
Overall it's a good story, and an interesting introduction, but I can't help feeling if Haven had just taken a little more time with it and fleshed the story out more, the book could have been so much more.
So while I mostly enjoyed the concept of the book, I did not enjoy its execution. The book read rather juvenile, and I don't mean that in a YA sense. What I mean is the writing is rather stilted and feels like the author is only just writing their first book (which I know is not true for this author). For an author with as many books out that this one does I'd expect things to have improved a bit by now.
Instead, we have a book that introduces the mates right in a row and practically identically (in fact I'm sure several sentences are just copied and pasted). I'm not opposed to insta-love when it involves paranormal, however, was just inconsistent. The characters seemed one dimensional, and let us not forget the many grammar and spelling errors.
This is not a bad idea but isbitms horribly written. Every single plot point revolves around the mated bond. There are continuity errors left and right. Nothing makes sense and is explained away by the mating bond. This is just bad. Feel like someone is looking at you at the mall and then again at home? Of course you walk outside and tell the first person you see you're stalking me! Have a week to get to school? Two days have passed and you have already missed the first day of classes. Born 11 months after your brother who both just graduated from college and you are moving into his dorm for his first day of college? I done know why you would find that confusing, he is both 18 and 22, why wouldn't he have nothing graduated and started college? Need to convince a girl who knows nothing about supernaturals and thinks you are crazy to go with you? Continually insist wolve shifters are real then kidnap her with the drugs you apparently came prepared with, don't worry. She will only be mad for two seconds when she comes to because "she trusts these guys", two of whom she met two minutes before they drugged and kidnapped her, and then it's I love you and I'm totally excited to go to this Hogwarts looking school that you have kidnapped me to and I'm not at all freaked out because you know I love you. I'm not at all exaggerating. I am willing to bet money this book appeared in one of the goodreads or Facebook books where the author exchanges free books for positive reviews because there is no way this can have a four star reading from anyone who is objective. My only non complain about this book was it was free for prime readers so the fake reviews that falsely rate this a 4 star book mean I wasn't fraudulently induced to purchasing this, but Amazon and it's subsidiary Goodreads should really make an effort to crack down on unverified reviews that are made by people who can't be verified as purchasers or else they are going to find themselves losing a class action lawsuit for fraud.
I don't normaly like books where the heroin in a little victimy but I really did like this book. Its a reverse harem book and would be suitable for YA readers. Although Penelope is very clueless and seems a little like a victim you get the impression this is to allow her character to grow throughout the series. The boys are great and I liked reading their POVs. The book is a bit more like a novella, which I also can find frustrating sometimes, but it seemed to work for this book, though I would have prefered something a little longer which is where it lost a 1/2* for me. I hope Scarlett Haven will eventually release an omnibus addition of either the whole series or at least join two books at a time, depending on the number of books when the series is complete, to just give a little more for the reader. At present this book is available on Kindle Unlimited which I love as it allows readers to try mew authors and genres so if you have Kindle Unlimited and were debating if you wanted to read this one, I would definatly say you should download it even if its not something you would normally read. The story sucks you in fairly quickly and it is short enough that you can read it when you have nothing to do one afternoon but don't want to get caught up in a book that will take you all day, or even all weekend for some books in the supernatural/paranormal ganre, to read.
A quick note to Scarlett Haven, you may want to double check your editors work or get an additional person to read the book looking specifically at grammer errors and a few places the wrong word entirely was used. I know when you read your own work back it can be easy to miss things like is instead of it or when the sentence doest flow or make complete sence due to an edditing change or a mistake as you will see it as you intended it as opposed to how it actually is on the page.
This story follows Penelope, a twin who always felt a little different than anyone else. When her mates show up, her entire life changes in a matter of minutes. Different in the human world and different in the supernatural world, Penelope must adapt to survive while dealing with not only her first boyfriend, but four of them. Will this world accept Penelope? Can her guys protect her? Read and find out. This book is a slow burn academy type why choose story. Supernatural, mystery, romance and a dash of self discovery all wrapped up into one book. The writing is well done. A nice flowing style with natural sounding dialogue and a linear progression of events makes for an easy read. No slogging through just to get to the end. There are some twists and turns as well as some mystery things, but the reader doesn't feel confused and frustrated. The editing was well done. I didn't notice any errors in spelling, grammar or continuity. We do get some chapters with the guys' POVs. Every time there is a speaker change, the reader is notified by a header with the guy's name. It was well done and added to the story. We get to see their true thoughts and motivations rather than only seeing them second hand. I liked Penelope. I did feel as though the acceptance went fast, but it is a fantasy book so I chalked it up to the mate bond and moved along. She is a supernatural being, but seems pretty realistic. She has self esteem issues, feels guilt for things she didn't do, and is confused by her emotions at times like most teenagers. She also is very loving and sort of reminds me of the sweet quiet girl in class. Overall, I would recommend this book. I look forward to seeing what happens next and getting more pieces to the puzzles!
The storyline had so much potential! It made me stick to the end with hope that the characters would grow with it. I was so curious about the heroine, since she was such a mystery. And the boys were all nice and loving, though their personalities blended together and were not very unique.
Once the boys kept holding information from Penelope the story kind of gets stale. There was really no point for that and I wished this author had someone pointed this out to her before this book publication. Sometimes it was even the heroine that didn’t want to know things “ because she was too overwhelmed...”. In my opinion that’s just a way to keep delaying the big reveal without developing any story.
In the end the overall pace didn’t work for me. As a starting point all characters had big inner monologues with all this self doubt. But when the book goes on and on like that, without any character development, or any answers it was too much.
Not a book for me. Won’t be continuing this series/author. But I would say that it did have potential and it might be a case where the series just have really slow development and might pick up later. Read at your own risk.
Different ~ Scarlett Haven (Shifter Academy Series) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
Ok soooo. I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was great that it wasn’t revealed within the first few chapters what/who our main character is. By the end of this book we still aren’t sure! I love the mystery of it all. It’s refreshing for an author not to shed light on the situation as soon as the mc is introduced.
Her Mates ? I absolutely love their relationship. One thing I have gathered throughout many books is how dominating wolf shifters are. So it’s nice that they really pull together and agree with that dreaded sharing problem.
The reason I didn’t give 5 stars? Is because of repetitive stuff. It seemed like we were rehashing everything within 10 minutes. I know that the mc was very insecure about herself and the situation she has found herself in, however we didn’t need to know the same thing every chapter or so.
Will I go on to read book 2? Hell yes! Straight after I finished I was searching for the next... i have to wait till the 22nd for it to be released, not too long!
I’m on the fence. I liked it, but didn’t love it. I couldn’t fall into this story, yet the narrative spoke in a way that kept me reading, despite the disconnect. The author has a unique way of writing, it’s both friendly and familiar, yet calming... like this is how things are, accept them - oh, and you’re my best friend listening to a story. It’s hard to explain, but that’s how it felt - like the MC was often talking to someone, you as a friend, instead of as a reader who is trying to understand. It was interesting, though not wholly effective.
Pros: - World is unique - Style of writing was appealing, for the most part - The mystery over who she is, or rather what, will get me to read book 2.
Cons: - Characters are 18, though the situation (minus the school) would seem more appropriate to older. Young 20’s. - Hard to sink in to - secondary character reactions... - Some scenes were confusing, I mean... why?
This book is pretty good. I have a few problems with it, but overall, it's a bit unique, and I am curious to see where this is going.
I like the characters. What I didn't like is how the female MC looks down on herself so much. I'm sure she has that inner strength, and she will probably become someone strong and amazing, but for now, I'm not a fan. The guys seem to protect her to much. I understand that she is new to their world, it's just not something I'm liking at the moment.
I also felt that the story was moving along so fast, and it was also over to quickly. I don't feel like I know the characters, and I'm not sure that is a good thing.
World building is a huge part of any fantasy or paranormal story in my opinion, and this story lacks the back story and details I was hoping to find.
Overall, I did enjoy the book. I love this authors other work, so I am excited to read the next book, and I'm hoping it is better.
I found this book to be lacking. It doesn’t grab attention or engage that urgency to frantically page flick to find out the ending. I think the overall lack of a proper story arch (introduction, problem, solution, conclusion) really lets it down. It reads more like a small introduction novella to a bigger series than a book that can stand on its own. The sequel may provide a more satisfying read but I personally would have preferred to wait longer and read a completed book.
That being said, I really enjoyed the main characters and their interactions with other people. Quite relatable with the opportunity to explore their personalities in depth later in the series. These characters offer a great foundation from which a fantastic novel could be written.
I’m not sure if I will read the next entry in the series when released, but if I do I hope it provides a more complete reading experience.
OK I've read a ton of books with various different authors writing styles but this one literally felt like a high schooler wrote it. There was very little world building, little to no character development, and there were so much inner monolog from the FMC I became seriously annoyed. The FMC was just flat with a woe-is-me attitude. She has the power to read emotions a d thoughts but still has insecurities about if she is good enough.... good enough for what?! I began to skim her parts of the book most if the time. She is so self deprecating that I feel like the only time there is story is when we are in the guy's perspective and even then it was spent reassuring her. This was so fast paced and over too quickly. I wanted to like this book- the concept was nice but again the execution was.. just not. I have a mild curiosity to read the next one but I doubt the writing style will differ that much.
That was a big disappointment for me. I love reverse harem books and I also love supernatural schools or academies....so you can imagine that book sounded like a jackpot. Unfortunately it was pretty boring and the characters were pretty lacking with no personality.
The heroine is annoying and just lame. I love my heroines to have fire and a witty sarcastic personality. But there are also a few quiet ones out there that I like. But this was just lame.
And the supernatural school aspect? Yeah, that was pretty much not existing. I hoped for some magical classes and some teenage drama and insteresting school stuff....but nothing. I think there was one chapter in it where they were in class....and it was English class and they were there exactly 5 minutes. They guys were pretty lame, too. No personality and just lovesick puppies.
That was pretty disappointing. If it wasn't such a short book, I would have DNF'ed.
