A bit too far fetched, even for a “monster/ zombie” book, for me to enjoy.

I enjoyed reading the first four books in the Tide series by Anthony J. Melchiorri. Domenic (ex CIA) and his team of Hunters are a top-secret covert unit that discovers a laboratory on an oil derrick in the middle of the ocean where a genetic weapon is engineered and accidentally unleashed. A simple scratch turns the victim into a demonic weapon - a fighting machine protected by bony scaled armor who feasts on their victims and are hard to kill. Unfortunately, in the days to follow, the virus spreads worldwide and humans everywhere begin fighting for their lives.

During these first four books in the eight book series, the Hunters encounter various missions and find themselves in seemingly unwinnable situations - killing hundreds, no thousands, I mean tens of thousands of these "skulls" while seeking survivors and trying to rescue Dom's family. During each of these missions, the team runs into evolved monsters - goliaths which are as big as homes and put the "Hulk" to shame, and spitters who spray hydrochloric acid at their victims; each is harder to kill than the regular, everyday run of the mill skull.

Team members die, some are injured by the skulls and destined to soon turn. Fortunately, Dom's ship is equipped with a full medical lab and a group of experts, who are searching for a cure. It doesn't take them long to develop a treatment to prevent humans from turning if treated quickly. However, only a small amount of doses exist with methods to mass produce the antidote.

The team soon encounters a group of humans (bikers) who captured Dom's children and a team member in Washington DC and hold them hostage for weapons and food. Of course, Dom doesn't negotiate with terrorists and the battle begins.

In book four, the military captures Dom's ship and holds everyone captive. It is difficult to understand why the General is doing this until readers learn that a high ranking member of the CIA is calling the shots. They are blaming Dom and his former boss for engineering and launching the pandemic. Dom's group fights back to retake his ship but doesn't want to injure any of the American soldiers since they are only following orders and not responsible for their actions.

I need to take a break from the series and come back to it later. Most of the action taking place is a running battle - very descriptive and full of killing skulls a thousand different ways. I do plan to return in the near future to see how Dom and his team continue the fight and who eventually survives until the end.

This collection contains the first four books in the "The Tide" Series. This is a typical apocalyptic zombie story showing the fight for survival and different facets of human behaviors.
1. The Tide - A post-apocalyptic story, wherein a biochemical weapon developed by the Japanese towards the end of world war 2, finds its way into current times and infects a whole lot of the world population. A bunch of mercenaries working with a CIA agent is looking to find the cure and save humanity.
This book provides some background information, the impact and the spread of the disease, and some initial efforts to find the cure.
Quite slow progress in the story, nothing spectacular but I would still go for the next book in the series.
I am presuming that at some point of time in the series of 10 books this book will get predictable and monotonous. Let's see how the next parts are.

2. Breakwater - Breakwater, Book 2 in the post-apocalyptic world series Tide, is as captivating as Book 1. The battle for humanity's survival continued and there are several instances where the excitement quickens the pulse. This is a 10 book long series and I have the first four from audible. It's very difficult to keep the audience engaged for such a long series. So far the author has done a decent job. Let us see how long I can stick to the series.

3. Salvage - In this third book, the story continues from where it left off and is about continuing the hunt for a cure and more survivors. During the process, the Hunters discovered that the virus is mutating and that now there are two more bad types of skulls that are more dangerous than the previous. This book also starts touching on the changing and increasingly dangerous political climate in the country.

4. Deadrise - Deadrise is the fourth book in the series and contains some interesting twists and turns. Hunters were thought to be traitors and betrayed by US Military and their ship was boarded by Coast Guards and confiscated. On the other hand, US Army Commander Shepherd, Rachel, and Rory from Fort Detrick were also picked up by the military and questioned about their relationship with Hunters - specifically Dom and Meredith. Now, the Hunters must face another fight with some other human survivors and try to take control of their ship. This book is overall very interesting and contains a lot of twists and turns.

The attacks by the Oni Agent infected crazies continued worldwide. There is now nowhere safe!

Dom and the crew of the research vessel "Huntress" are furiously working on treatment and cure for the Oni Agent turning the world's population into 'skulls'. The disease attacks the brain of the infected, eating huge holes in the frontal lobes, making the victims frantically crazy. The agent also causes massive changes to the skeletal structures of the body turning their fingernails to claws and creating bony structures over vulnerable parts of the body and growing bony spurs and spikes on shoulders and elbows.

The Skulls attack the uninfected, tearing them apart and eating them. Surviving victims became infected and rapidly turned into Skulls. Dom and his Hunters were hard-pressed to combat the Skulls, let alone the the illness causing it.

Terrific action and believable characters bring this story an amazing twist on zombie apocalypse fiction. This is a great read!

I love when audible makes these collections to get you going with a new series.

I thought this audio book was well done I enjoyed the narrators voice and his variations for all the characters.

I really liked the story. It was a different take on a basic story that's been told in this genre often. It kept me interested until the end of book four. I will definitely listen to the other 6 books in the series, but it won't be right away. I left the series needing a break from it. It wasn't one of those can't wait for it to end kinda things, but wasn't like some that you don't want to stop.

By book three I found myself being a little annoyed that the team always escaped or recovered from everything. Somehow they were to good at everything and really didn't seem to have actual problems other than the energy they would have to spend, at least that's how it felt sometimes. You know that all the main players will be fine even when the worst happens like they get shot while running from a Goliath. However the author does a good job of making those scenes interesting still. It just got a little old sometimes.

I have no regrets about this listen. I would listen again and I would recommend it to anyone else that enjoys this genre.

I'm still listening, but two things are bothering me; First Kara just said she wished someone had given her mother that kindness (death) when she was tuning????????????? Joe tried to and, she Kara stopped him. She was also VERY angry with him. 2nd) How many times is Maggie the dog going to betray their whereabouts before they figure it out??? I'll be back to finish my review. ---------------------
Finished. Good, my type of book. A couple of minor complaints. The action is non-stop. When I say non-stop I mean it never stops, so there is never time to get to know the characters better. Also they NEVER, rest or even sleep. Not very realistic. We also get no insight into the bad guys and their motives. Sure being a series we will, but I wish there had been at least a little window behind who, and their motivations So it appears what I am saying is I just listened to over 37 hours of damn good action-without much else. But, I'm not complaining.

Perils of Pauline had fewer last second escapes than the crew of the Mercenary ship Huntress. That, plus the continual need to find ways to describe the killing of Skulls made the books repetitive. I found myself flipping past pages on my Kindle and not missing anything but more killing scenes.
This book shares a problem with other vampire/ waling dead/monster books that rely on reanimating or transforming bodies: where does the energy come from to keep them moving, once the initial slaughter and consumption of victims is over? In this case, when aroused, the Skulls appear to have unlimited frenzy energy. It becomes even silver when their bodies are transformed into essentially armor-plated killing machines? Where did the chemicals and energy come from to keep up the process?
This started out as a fun, exciting story. By the end it had become too repetitious to make it worthwhile to purchase further volumes.

Gripping!!

Stumbled upon this series from an add on FB and I was intrigued from essentially page one. If you are a fan of military / sci-fi / horror than this series is right up your alley. Also, if you're a fan of Nicholas Fans bury Smith's work, then this also is right up your alley. No wonder i loved this series because their writing styles are very similar, in fact I do believe they have collaborated in the past.

The tide series grabs you within the first couple of pages and for the most part, does not let go. Non stop action, adventure and horror with a mix of drama. You feel for the characters drama, fears, and pain.

The only reason I took so long to finish this series (1-4) is because of work. In fact, I read the books more sitting in the woods "hunting", than actually looking for deer. So give the series a shot, you won't be disappointed.

This is one of the best series I've ever read - and I've read a LOT.

The Tide is a post-apocalyptic biomedical thriller series. After a terrible bioweapon is released, a mass epidemic which turns humans into Skulls - zombie-like creatures - threatens to wipe out humanity altogether. The survivors are on a race against time to try to find a cure, or at least a way to eliminate the infected and keep more people from continuing to get infected and turning.

The author works in the biomedical field himself, so his books have a great foundation in scientific facts and processes, which makes them even more fascinating.

I previously received complimentary copies of books 1-4 in return for my honest reviews.

If you've read Nicholas Sanbury Smith's The Evolution Cycle books, this is basically the same thing. A biological lab suddenly loses contact with the outside world, and a military unit is sent in to investigate. They soon discover some sort of virus or mutation has been unleashed on the world, and the rest of the books focus on their efforts to stop the pandemic, rescue survivors, and find the source and the cure. It's actually quite entertaining, we follow Captain Dominic Holland and his team of "hunters" as they do battle with the ever-evolving monsters. If you like post-apocalyptic sci-fi military, then this is a great series to begin. There are currently 10 books in the series, wish there was an option to purchase all 10 books at once on audible.

DNF at 8%
didn't like: didn't hook me, no interest in any of the characters, lot more telling us stuff instead of showing it (like they might joke around but they work hard when it counts .. instead of telling us that it could have easily been demonstrated, etc), lots of metaphorical descriptions (some really common ones), also at one point I started wondering how does one, biologically speaking, suddenly grow horns??
the after series by william forstchen (sp?) and the trackers series (both series emp instead of zombies), and chronicles of the one series by nora Roberts and the broken world series by kate l. mary are much better.

On to book 5

I stumbled across this box set on Amazon and fell into a great story. I put off reading this for a while because I thought it was going to be a stereotypical zombie end of the world series. Missed that by a mile. What I found was/is a well written, professional, incredibly researched series. The characters are well-developed and the landscape is so realistic you'd think the author had lived in this area his entire life. Beyond all this is a really good story and a mystery you want to get the answers to.

A rolling mass of action, adventure that will have grasped on page 1 book 1...

The action is this series is quite extensive and gripping. Intrigue and deception seems to abound at the highest levels of the military. Either 1 man having turned paranoid and tyrannical or a cabal, one is certain to wonder as counter intelligence seem to make the development and production of a cure almost impossible. Good character development with careful attention to story plot and sub plots, and even the editing of the book was damn fine.

Fast Paced Thriller

Continual tension and unending suspense. As the story progresses more and more questions arise. As each mission takes place you wander which hero will not survive. The world portrayed is one no one would want to live in as there is constant violence and terror that seems unbeatable and there are few that can be trusted. Every thing seems to get worse as time goes by. Will there be a solution for the terrible situation on earth? Read this fast paced series to find out!

Tides Box set is Amazing

Melchiorri has this amazing knack for grabbing you by the throat and shaking the Hell out of you like a Rabid Dog. Never once does he let up with the action, suspense and horror of the what ifs in a world on the brink. Strong characterizations are a hallmark of Melchiorri's writings and you cant help but be moved by the triumphs and losses. No spoilers but I recommend you clear your reading schedule and take a few days off because you wont put this box set down. Hunters Rock !!!

What a ride! A sci-fi story with never ending action. Someone or something is turning people into "skulls". People once infected start showing signs of aggression and start having bony ridges protruding from their skin. And the fun begins... they devour living humans they are out numbering the human race all over the world. It's up to the Hunters to stop these creatures but the creatures are hard to take down.
On top of fighting these monsters the Hunters leader Dom and former CIA analyst Meredith Webb are accused of creating this mess.
No rest for the Hunters.

Amazing Series!!

Dominic Holland and the Hunters are awesome. This story is a face paced thrill ride from start to finish. The science in it is fascinating and the fact that the author knows his facts makes the scenario even more compelling. Science fiction supported by science fact is one thing I absolutely love, add an exciting storyline with real characters and you have a series that is a must read!

Really is excellent and cheap at half the price! Okay it’s another zombie story but you know that from the summary and you know it’s over 37hrs long so that’s quite a hike. So I decided to listen to it in big bites so too speak!

It’s a good filler in between my more usual murder, mystery novels and it’s not got that many characters that have any depth which means I could dip in and out as I pleased.

It’s an easy listen which I found to be well narrated and it’s worth the dosh.

The adventures of Captain Dominic Holland and his small team of Hunters makes for some of my favorite reading. This post-apocalyptic series has all of the elements essential to entice readers and keep them hooked. I’ll continue to gobble up these action-packed stories for as long as the author is willing to write them.

Absolutely well done!

Here's a series that needs to be put on the big screen. Terrific characters, corrupt government, heroes fighting against flesh eating biologically designed monsters that have taken over most of the world. Our heroes are smart, well trained and disciplined and won't stop until they defeat this threat to mankind. Do not pass this one by!!

Too much

This a case of less is more. Far too many pages on fighting the same thing time and time again. The real story about fighting the contagion and surviving with dwindling supplies was somewhat lost in the mire of gun fire. A bit like those tv series that never get anywhere and go on for years.

A good book, well written. The"Sculs" Im not sure I like them, lol I don't know how you kept Dom and Merideth alive thru the mayhem!

I want you all to know that I almost never read up priced sequels! So I guess I won't know what happens to the ship or crew!
Good luck to you and your Maritime exploits!

Thrilling storyline

Good Post-Apocalyptic storytelling, he keeps things interesting, just when they start to calm down. The different mutations of the skulls are surprising and almost fit in the different body types of today. I’m surprised there isn’t a flying skull yet, but that may be too far fetched for even this storyline.

This series so far is fantastic. I am thoroughly enjoying the characters and the story line and I like that the main character Dom is a family man who is trying so hard to find a way to end the skulls so that his two girls will have a safe world to live in.
I just finished the first 4 books last night and have just started on the fifth - the adventure continues.

Not your normal Zombie book.
Think, spiky Bone Exo-Skeletons in a wide array of sizes, shapes, designs, and revolutions.

The main crew you follow have a great (not the perfect) setup to ride out the apoc. but they decide they need to help, will the govt. let them help or hinder them or even imprison them?

Yes 4 books is a long time for a Zombie book but you will end it wanting MORE !

Cool story, and nice science as well.

Bit over the top in the action part characters get thrown into so much bad situations you'd wonder they catch a break every now and then at least, but the main characters are almost `superman` incarnate with very few weak points.
