Spring at Taigh Fallon

Rate this book
A fabulous, fun story from Kirsty Ferry. Part of Kirsty's Tempest Sisters series but they can all be read in any order. From old secrets come new beginnings …When Angel Tempest finds out that her best friend Zac has inherited a Scottish mansion, Taigh Fallon, from his great aunt, she immediately offers to go and visit it with him. It will mean closing up her jet jewellery shop in Whitby for a few days but the prospect of a spring trip to the Scottish Highlands is too tempting. Then Kyle, Zac’s estranged and slightly grumpy Canadian cousin, unexpectedly turns up at Taigh Fallon, and events take a strange turn as the long-kept secrets of the old house begin to reveal themselves … Part of a series, Tempest Sisters, which can be read in any order. What folks are saying about Spring at Taigh "Mystery, tragedy and romance combined beautifully." "Another great read from Kirsty Ferry." "Kirsty Ferry never fails to deliver a gem these days – she seems to go from strength to strength. I read this book in one sitting again – I can’t seem to be able to put one down once I have started, until the very end, and even then it is a wrench!" "Fabulous mix of romance and history." "Fab atmospheric read." Perfect for fans of Barbara Erskine, Diana Gabaldon & Susannah Kearsley.

Spring at Taigh Fallon by Kirsty Ferry is a 2019 Choc Lit publication.

A hauntingly romantic love story-

“Taigh Fallon knows what is best for all who love it”

When Angel discovers her best friend, Zac, and his cousin, Kyle, have inherited Taigh Fallon, a Scottish Mansion, from his great aunt, she offers to travel with him to see his newly acquired property. She immediately falls in love with the crumbling estate, but Zac is not all that keen on keeping the place. However, when his cousin Kyle arrives, Angel is angered and saddened by Kyle’s plans for the house. The pair clash almost immediately! But the old mansion is holding a few secrets, secrets that could have a lasting impact on all who love Taigh Fallon…

This is another wonderful and magical love story by Kirsty Ferry. The story employs a dual timeline, one from the late 1800s, which depicts a fateful, but tragic love triangle, and the present day, where Angel, Zac and Kyle explore the old Scottish estate, discovering its poignant and magnetic pull, while pondering the future, not only of the grand old mansion, but for themselves, as well.

I really loved the “Wuthering Heights’ parallels in this story and of course the bittersweet ghost story/ time slip elements. Angel is a terrific character, filled with great passion. Zac could be so clueless sometimes, but he was also pragmatic, and maintained a calm demeanor, which is what Angel needed on occasion. Kyle was an enigma is some ways, but I understood more about him, towards the end, where he made me swoon just a little…

Overall, a lovely story recommended to everyone!

Angel Tempest owned a jet jewellery shop in the small town of Whitby and when her good friend Zac phoned to inform Angel he’d inherited an old mansion in Scotland from his Great Aunt Jeanie, she told Zac she’d join him when he went to view it. Zac lived on the Isle of Skye and had no desire to visit the mainland – Angel knew he’d be happier with her by his side; plus she couldn’t wait to see Taigh Fallon. Zac had explained that his cousin Kyle was also included in the inheritance but with him living in Canada, he wasn’t likely to appear.

Taigh Fallon immediately took hold of Angel; she loved the old place and when she found the tower with the mystical mirror and half imagined shadows flitting across the room, she was captivated. But it was when Kyle unexpectedly turned up that things went awry. Strange occurrences, intriguing sounds – what was happening? And why was Kyle so aggressive?

Spring at Taigh Fallon is the 2nd in the Tempest Sisters series by Kirsty Ferry and once again I loved it. With a dual timeline – set partly in the 1800s, partly current day, the mystery, intrigue, ghostly events and time slip elements are done extremely well by the author. This series can be read in any order as each book is a different sister’s story – this one is Angel’s. Highly recommended.

With thanks to Choc Lit Publishing for my digital copy to read in exchange for an honest review.

My favourite time slip author is back with another fine romance. This time it all goes a bit Wuthering Heights with a bit of Whitby goth thrown in. There are two main reasons I love Kirsty's work; firstly because there's always something to learn whether it be historical or some new poetry and secondly because her characters always have that little extra about them. This time Angle is in love with all things Victorian right down to her fashion style and Kyle is definitely a bit Heathcliffe. I loved the fact they spent most of the book arguing while developing some feelings towards each other. Oh and I really need someone to leave me a gothic mansion with hidden ice tunnels!

This is the second book in the series based around three series but I do want to see a fourth one - Zac needs a happy ending! You need to read the book to find out why :)

Overall I loved this one and it's a great addition to Kirsty's work.

This is Book 2 in the Tempest Sisters series, BUT can be easily read as a standalone, although I can highly recommend Book 1 - Summer At Carrick Park if you'd like to read that first! And in Taigh Fallon we follow the story of Angel Tempest who is a jewellery maker in Whitby, and who loves all things gothic! She is no shrinking violet in her choice of clothes or sharing her opinion and she does a lot of that in this book!

When her best friend Zac learns that he has inherited his the mansion in the Scottish Highlands that used to belong to his Great Aunt, he needs a friend to go with him and who better than Angel! She immediately falls in love with the history and setting of the house, and feels a real connection to the place - more so than Zac! Taigh Fallon has also been left to his Canadian cousin, Kyle, who used to bully Zac when they'd both be in Scotland visiting, but times have moved on and they're both different people now so it's interesting to see how that dynamic works - Zac seems much more forgiving than Angel who had heard from Zac about how he'd been treated in the past!

While they are all there a few strange sights and sounds begin to fill the halls and Angel is both fascinated and a little freaked about the feelings she has. It's as if Taigh Fallon is trying to share the past with her and I loved the atmospheric setting and flashes back.

The storyline set in 1897 featuring Annis was a fascinating mix and added so much with an intriguing romance and seances and the link to the family history is always a favourite part of mine in any story.

I loved the whole feeling of this book! The friendship between Zac and Angel was really touching and her passion in sticking up for her friend against Kyle was admirable, if a little over the top at times! She's not one who quickly forgives and forgets!! I absolutely raced through this book and really hope there'll be more in this series as I love the time-slip elements!!

Highly recommended!!

Angel and Zac have been friends for years.

Now, I’ve heard such good things about Kirsty Ferry from other bloggers so I was looking forward to reading Spring at Taigh Fallon and it certainly lived up to my expectations.

I thought Kirsty Ferry had done a magnificent job in blending the two time frames for her story with the house, Taigh Fallon, at the centre. The two eras melded together so well with echoes of the past reverberating in the present. There’s just enough supernatural ghostliness to be credible and provide a frisson of excitement without straying into the realms of the ridiculous so that, although this isn’t my usual choice of genre, Kirsty Ferry held my attention completely and entertained me royally.

Similarly, the romantic relationships in the narrative felt totally real and believable. I was captivated by both Zac and Kyle and would rather have liked a romantic interlude with either of them. Angel Tempest, however, steals the show. She’s stubborn, flawed and impetuous – just as any romantic heroine should be. I loved the fact that she’s a strong Whitby Goth rather than a simpering blond haired fragile female in need of a man to take care of her. I’m not usually overly fond of children but Grace worked well for me here and afforded Kyle the right opportunity to reveal his true nature so that the characters in Spring at Taigh Fallon felt human and warm to me.

I also thoroughly appreciated the iterative image of The Lady of Shalott that runs through the story with the tower, mirror and superstitions of the setting. It added a smashing layer of satisfaction to the read.

I thought Spring at Taigh Fallon was a perfect grown up romantic fairy tale for adults and can’t wait to read about the other Tempest sisters. I found it romantic without being slushy, well plotted and enormously entertaining. I’m only sorry it has taken me so long to discover Kirsty Ferry’s lovely writing first hand.

When Angel Tempest finds out that her best friend, Zac, has inherited his great aunt’s mansion Taigh Fallon, she offers to go and help him, as she’s intrigued.

Leaving Whitby and heading to Zac’s before the journey to Scotland, Zac tells Angel about his childhood holidays there with his cousin, Kyle.

After a rude awakening, Angel meets Zac’s cousin, Kyle, and Angel takes an instant dislike to him, as she believes his plans for the mansion are not good.

I loved this story, the characters were fun and quirky. I loved Angel’s outfits and obsession with the Victorian era, I could picture her in my head, thanks to the author’s descriptive writing. I thoroughly enjoyed the dual timeline, it was informative and the attention to detail from the late 1800s, as well as now, was excellent.

This is the first book in the Tempest Sisters books and I’m looking forward to reading more in the series.

When Angel Tempest joins her friend, Zac Fallon at his newly inherited family mansion, Taigh Fallon, she feels instantly connected to the house. When his Canadian cousin, Kyle, arrives unexpectedly, she takes an instant dislike to him. It seems however, that the house has secrets to reveal to them….
When I started reading Spring at Taigh Fallon it felt completely different to the other novels I have read by the author, and as I was in search of happiness after a particularly tough read, I wasn’t sure if I liked it at first! However, the darker style is in perfect keeping with the main character, Angel Tempest. Quirky and goth-like, she is fully deserving of a novel which explores romance in a darker and more passionate light.
Once my initial expectations faded, I was completely won over by the wonderfully atmospheric setting of Taigh Fallon. I love how the author is so in tune with the beautiful old buildings she writes about: she breathes life into bricks and mortar, their character oozing out through the narrative. Her ‘characterisation’ of Taigh Fallon is just gorgeous, and is my favourite to date.
The story itself is fabulous. It is a dual time line narrative, which I’m always a sucker for, while stylistically it is a hybrid of Wuthering Heights and Pride and Prejudice. It honours the wild and gothic landscape of the former, whilst the characters of Angel and Kyle do justice to the latter. I love how there is magic and mysticism and a touch of the fairytale element woven throughout too, whilst the intrigue and tragedy of the late 1800s marries perfectly with the overall tone of the book.
My only criticism is the cover. As lovely as it is, it really doesn’t seem to reflect the content and style of the novel. Something a little more gothic and atmospheric would have been much more fitting. When reading I got serious autumnal vibes throughout, it just didn’t feel very spring-like. A very minor quibble though because otherwise I loved it!
Another incredibly enjoyable offering from Kirsty Ferry. I’m looking forward to book three in the Tempest Sister series already!

SPRING AT TAIGH FALLON is a beautifully written story that is part romance, a touch of time slip, just a bit haunted and completely enjoyable and compelling. Once started it’s difficult to leave this world even for short breaks. (I even managed to hold off on a coffee refill for a couple of chapters – and nothing keeps me from my coffee addiction *Grin*) Told with a dual timeline and more than a hint of ghosts, hidden passageways, mystical happenings and a feeling of magic just out of reach, SPRING AT TAIGH FALLON will capture your attention and hold you captive throughout.

I adored Angel with her love of all things Victorian, a touch of Gothic surrounds her at any given moment. She’s loyal, at times brash, outspoken and will defend her best friend against anything or anyone… including a man who draws her to him even as he angers her like no other can. Angel and Kyle worked well as a couple, their bantering, arguing and telling glances spoke just as much as their actual words did. I loved Zac and his man certainly deserves his own story and his lifetime love as well. But the real shining personality of them all is this aging, regal, mysterious mansion that has seen so much and still stands only reluctantly giving up its secrets to Angel, Kyle, and Zac.

SPRING AT TAIGH FALLON is a story that needs to be read to completely appreciate the nuances, the feelings that all the characters and the mansion will envoke in each reader. I was captured by this story and I’m definitely looking forward to the next in the series. If you love a good romance, a sense of moving between time periods, a bit of a mystery and beautifully described buildings with stories of their own to tell then you’ll feel right at home in this world. I loved my time here and would not hesitate to recommend it to any reader of Romance, no matter your favorite genre.

*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*

Spring at Taigh Fallon is the second to feature one of the Tempest sisters. The first was Summer at Carrick Park, which featured Rosa Tempest. Although these books are part of a series, it's a series you can read in any order.

This book features Angel Tempest - what a name! She's a bit of a dark angel perhaps. Not in her nature but in looks with her dark hair, dark clothes, dark nail varnish and her fascination for all things Victoriana. Perhaps she was born in the wrong era? She's perfectly at home in gothic Whitby. Indeed, her house and shop where she polishes jet and makes it into jewellery is called Goth Cottage. She is equally at home in Taigh Fallon, the large and possibly haunted house in the Scottish Highlands inherited by her best friend Zac. The house was also left to his annoying Canadian cousin, Kyle, who used to torment Zac as a youngster and who he hasn't seen for years.

Well it seems that Angel and Kyle are destined to be together. As you learn more about the house and its mysterious secrets, it seems they may have been destined to be together from years gone by. Despite an apparently mutual hatred, there is just something about each other that's so familiar, something that draws them to each other. The past is reaches into the present in this story, seeming almost at touching distance. There are mysterious mirrors, hidden staircases and corridors, and unsettling sensations. I love the way that Kirsty Ferry brings a ghostly, spiritual element into her stories and makes it feel completely possible.

Spring at Taigh Fallon is part Gothic mystery, part tragedy and part contemporary romance. Kirsty Ferry has blended the three beautifully. She also created a really vivid sense of place from Whitby, to Skye to Taigh Fallon itself overlooking Eilean Donan castle. This is a very enjoyable read and as always happens with this author's writing, I finished the book with a contented smile. I can't wait to read about the third Tempest sister Jessie who, it seems, runs a bookshop!

Time slip isn’t my usual read but I have to say I always enjoy Kirsty Ferry’s books. Spring at Taigh Fallon which is the second of the Tempest sister’s novels sees Angel Tempest following her friend Zac Fallon to Scotland to see the house in the Cairngorms his great aunt has left him. This imposing old mansion set on the side of a lake in the Scottish Highlands provides a beautiful and atmospheric setting to the story.
The will has provided for the house to be divided between Zac and his cousin Kyle, who currently lives in Canada. Zac’s memories of his older cousin Kyle are less than favourable. When he arrives in the middle of the night, grumpy and complaining it certainly seems time hasn’t changed him.
Immediately sparks fly between brooding hero Kyle and feisty heroine Angel, but is this really all about dislike? Or is there something else simmering between the two of them? Then there’s the tower room which Angel discovers. Sensitive to spirits, she soon finds herself witnessing scenes of a Victorian tragedy.
A great read. Highly recommended.
Please note although Spring at Taigh Fallon is part of a series, it can be read as an independent story.

Kirsty Ferry never fails to deliver a gem these days – she seems to go from strength to strength. I read this book in one sitting again – I can’t seem to be able to put one down once I have started, until the very end, and even then it is a wrench!

Using her now trademark ‘time slip’ style, we have two love stories in one. Angel is a jewellery creator, living and working in Whitby. Her friend Zac also works with gems in his home on the Isle of Skye. Zac inherits part of a house on the shores of Loch Duich near the ruins of Eilean Donan, and they both head there to see what the house is like. The house is also bequeathed in equal part to Zac’s cousin Kyle, who arrives to see the inheritance at the same time. This is where the house starts to reveal its magic, with glimpses from a tragic past, intertwined with what is happening today. I was intrigued enough to get out a map and try to pinpoint the location of Taigh Fallon – I think I’ve almost got it!

I had already read ‘Summer at Carrick Park’, which is actually a kind of sequel to this novel, but that didn’t detract from my pleasure at all. I am now looking forward hopefully to whatever ‘Autumn’ and ‘Winter’ might bring - don’t disappoint me, Kirsty!

This was a great romance, with a healthy dose of historic fiction and a sprinkling of spiritualism. I really enjoyed this book, with its interesting characters and beautifully described Scotland setting. The story follows Kyle, his cousin Zac, and Zac's best friend Angel, as they visit a home inherited by the two cousins and discover some its history and its mysteries. The book takes turns telling the story from each of the 3 main characters' viewpoints, interspersed with events from the home's owners in the 1890s. I got caught up in all their stories and had a hard time putting the book down. Another thing I liked was looking up all the places and terms I wasn't familiar with and helping me picture the settings more vividly.

This is my first book by Kirsty Ferry, but I will be looking for more!

I received an advance copy of this book. This review contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

I have read and enjoyed some of Kirsty Ferry's previous books but hadn't read the first book in this series. But it didn't matter, I really enjoyed this book as a standalone novel - although I will now be reading the first book in the series as I enjoyed this one so much.

I loved the settings of this novel - starting with gothic Whitby then onto beautiful Skye then to the gorgeous house Taigh Fallon overlooking Eilean Donan castle. I enjoyed the time slip element in this book and was fascinated to find out what had happened at Taigh Fallon in the past. The characters were believable and I enjoyed all of their stories.

This is a well written time slip novel which has contemporary romance, mystery, history, tragedy and a cracking storyline. I couldn't put it down.

Highly recommended.

When Zach unexpectedly inherits a large house in the Highlands of Scotland he telephones his friend Angel with the news. She persuades him that they should straightaway visit the house, treating the trip as a holiday. Zach's Canadian cousin, Kyle arrives at the same time and they learn he has inherited an equal share of Taigh Fallon.
While Zach longs to return to his quiet island life, Angel and Kyle, who have taken an instant dislike to each other, separately investigate the old house. There are mysterious sightings of unexplained figures and the discovery of hidden doors leading into forgotten, dusty passages. The plot travels back and forth from the present day to late 1800s as secrets of long ago are revealed.
An entertaining plot from Kirsty Ferry full of twists and turns that eventually uncover the secrets of Zach and Kyle's ancestors.

This is a good time slip romance which leaves you feeling all things could be possible. Angel is a jeweller living and working in Whitby with its vampire connections. Helping her friend Zac leads to supernatural happenings in the house he has inherited with his Canadian cousin Kyle. The relationship between the cousins, and with Angel, are intricately detailed and link into the history the house is hiding. The dangers the three go through before coming out into the light at the end of the book are spell binding in more ways than one. Read to the end to the happy ending but keep the light on and a supply of chocolate to hand.

A fun story with a smattering of ghosts

Angel Tempest , a lover of Victoriana and swishing skirts, travels to Scotland with her friend Zac to visit a house he has been left by a relative. A cousin, Kyle - sharing the inheritance- turns up from Canada and the arguments begin. Not between the boys but between Angel and Kyle who appear bound together by the past inhabitants of the house.
Quite a simplistic love story with a vague ghost backstory. I’m sure it fits in well with the Tempest sisters series and was fun to read with a very swift ending.

As the previous novella in the series was simply contemporary, I didn't expect this one to be different so the parts of chapters about old occupants of the house were a pleasant surprise. Those glimpses into the past are rather short but their connection to the present makes them important and powerful.
I really enjoyed following Angel, Kyle and Zac as they explored the house and discovered its secrets.
(And now I'm going to re-read Summer at Carrick Park.)

The book displayed promise, but its conclusion left much to be desired. Initially, navigating between past and present timelines proved challenging, but eventually, the narrative coalesced effectively. The characters were engaging and entertaining, yet the ending lacked the impact expected. Anticipation for a compelling romance was met with a disappointing resolution that felt out of sync with the characters' established personalities. Overall, the book fell short of expectations.

What a fun and mysterious at times lovely ghost story!

The title line does not hint about the love story that is slowly growing along with the stories with the ghosts on the property in Scotland. How fun and sometimes scary this multi country story is becoming! Look very much forward to the next book!
