About the author

Tearra Rhodes

12 books9 followers
Tearra Rhodes began her interest in creative writing in elementary school and has continued to pursue her passion for fiction and authorship, winning minor but meaningful awards and affirmations along the way.

Tearra’s faith is essential and guides her to create what she calls “faith based fiction with flair.”

When she’s not reading or writing fiction in all forms, Tearra attends church, eats out, and shops (maybe too much of the latter).

She has worked in some form of customer service all her working life and is currently in the insurance field.

Tearra was born, raised, and currently resides in Buffalo, NY, where she has boxes and boxes of unfinished stories and plays. Her next project will be pulling out one of those boxes and dusting off a potential masterpiece…oh, and continuing to develop the world of Ava, Michael, Wes, and Auntie Joy from The Micah Series.

A server at a city mission, with the chance to redeem something after a failed attempt at culinary school. A young man with no taste for coffee, working up the courage to talk to a cheery barista at an uptown bistro. The mother of a small child, facing the possibility of again living in her car. These stories and more are found in Fifty-Five: City Edition by author Tearra Rhodes.

Contemporary stories each composed of fifty-five words. I believe this is only my second time reading a flash fiction collection, and while I wouldn't say I'm an expert on this particular form of storytelling, I'm no newbie to the art of storytelling in general. So I'm comfortable saying this collection is quite a credit to the art of flash fiction.

So much can be wrapped up in just a few words when a writer knows how to wield them, and page after page in this short book takes a close and compelling look at life, with faith woven in. Some of the stories are connected to pack a bonus punch, while others get the job done on their own. I found myself smiling, "hm"-ing, or shaking my head (in a good way) after many of them, and one of the stories brought tears to my eyes.

Just that fast. In fifty-five words.

Whether you're new to the world of microfiction or not, if you believe that effective messages aren't shackled to wordiness and that great storytelling comes in various forms—or even if you're a little skeptical about short works of fiction—I'd encourage you to give this inspirational collection a go.

Reads like a devotional! Beautiful!

I thoroughly enjoyed these 55-word flash stories of inspiration & kindness. They are beautiful glimpses of daily life and quite poetic!

Each story seemed to build on the next and give more depth and weight to the story before. That is no easy feat with a cap of 55 words!!!

I look forward to another read like this from the author. Her words flowed seamlessly and truly struck a cord. It was like reading a daily devotional, or Chicken Soup for the Soul!

I would recommend this book to readers who like inspirational fiction or nonfiction, Christian Fiction, poetry, or daily devotionals!

This beautiful collection offers poignant and evocative glimpses into life. Rhodes does a particularly good job depicting the anonymity and surprise of urban living. Furthermore, the faith elements that run through each tale paint a realistic and heartfelt picture of discovering God in a modern, chaotic world.

Besides being a voracious reviewer of books, especially Christian books and even more so for nonfiction Christians books, I also happen to be an author. One of the books I wrote had been one that consisted of 100 Flash Fictions, where the vast majority of stories consisted of only FIVE sentences, so I can understand the complexity in writing stories with such sheer brevity.

Not only has author Tearra Rhodes succeeded in the brevity aspect of each of the 55 stories she has written for this book, but the Lord’s presence is also present in all of His glory, showing an individual’s faith at work as it pertains to the human experience living in the city in the name of the Lord.

Getting ready to publish my collection of Christian short stories and essays, I can see readers reading one to stories each morning, so get a boost of the Lord’s presence as they start their day. It is for this reason I’ve given the 5 STARS she deserves for her Christian endeavor here.
