Simply titled Inktober, this compilation captures the highlights of Linh-Tran Do's Inktober illustrations from 2015 to 2018. In the beginning, the illustrations drew from daily thoughts and events. In later years, Linh-Tran Do began following the prompts set by illustrator Jake Parker, the creator of Inktober. The illustrations then strove to explore the meaning of each word as well as to challenge the artist herself in creating daily masterpieces. Relive the journey of exploration through this art book. Linh-Tran Do is a graphic designer, illustrator, and sometimes writer based in Texas and California. She communicates stories through visuals and words as a cross-disciplinarian artist, practicing at the intersection of design, illustration, and fine arts. Though she draws inspiration from many sources, her work often explores the duality of being Vietnamese-American as well as the importance of cultural representation and mental health awareness. She graduated from Rice University with a B.A. in Visual Arts, received the Visual Arts Chairman’s Award, and was the first recipient of the Darra Keeton Award in Painting and Drawing.
In 2013 as part of the duo VILD Art Collaborative, Do created an art installation called Submerged: Origins of a Species, immersing the viewer with abstract representations of DNA made from test tubes and lights, first at Matchbox Gallery and later at Fresh Arts Houston. In 2014, she and her team ranked Top 8 in Disney’s Imaginations Competition with their project, “Selvestra.” Most recently, her illustration “Queen of Hearts” was selected as one of 20 designs chosen to represent Houston in Discovery Green’s exhibit House of Cards by OGE Group in Fall 2020.
Every year since 2015, she participates in Inktober and has self-published a collection of Inktober drawings, available on Amazon. She has illustrated and designed several books for Y Linh Publishing. Her fantasy short story, “Spirit of the Mountain,” won a Gold Key in the 2008 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. Her writing has been published in R2: The Rice Review, I Am Vietnamese Project, and Vietnamese Voices 2016 Anthology.
