My personal approach to fairly rating books out of five. Note that these ratings are based entirely on the standard of what the book and its creator promise it will do, not any other arbitrary standard a reader might spontaneously decide the book *should have* adhered to. Personal preferences are always subjective and arbitrary. There is no law of nature requiring any given reader to subjectively enjoy an objectively great book.

One Star: There is virtually nothing of value in the book. It utterly fails at its stated mission. There is no conceivable reason for the type of reader it is advertised to attempt to consume it.

Two Stars: The book contains some value but is so sparse or poorly organized that it's not worth the trouble of trying to filter through the whole of the book to extract it. At best, it's a smattering of decent ingredients and ideas that never quite took on an appropriate form.

Three Stars: The book has reached the equitability threshold. It is now conceivably worth the reader's time to attempt to read the book (or at least skim parts of it) in order to accomplish what its creators promise for them. Still, there is much wasted space, time, and effort in the process of value transferrence from writer to reader.

Four Stars: The book largely does what it promises, albeit in a still sub-optimal manner. The reader overall receives what the author of the book intends to send to them but can't help but notice ways the message could have accomplished its function better. Still, recommendations are in order.

Five Stars: The book is exactly what it promises to be and does what it is meant to do. Nitpicks aside, it is not realistic to envision a way it could have accomplished its stated function better. The reader got exactly what value they were supposed to get in an optimized manner. Read this book to enhance and expand the way you think about something important.

The Influential Author by Gregory V. Diehl is a book I was given a copy to read and review. But I actually listened to this one on audiobook and I recommend it to be the best way to process this book.

I read the book cover to cover but honestly, there isn’t a need to do so! This book is the textbook kind of read, where you can dip in and out of the chapters and get whatever you need to know about writing and publication. Even though it is focused on writing self-published nonfiction, I do think this could be beneficial to any writers who are starting out or considering self-publishing. It will help you with basically everything: from how to publish self-published work, what to consider, what you may need to do, and what to avoid. It also has tips on how to develop a healthy writing routine and write better as well. It covers so much that I don’t really see myself needing to read another non-fiction guide on how to write and publish self-published works.

As a book blogger, I sometimes accept self-published books for review. I’ve pretty much come across everything now. From the good, to the bad, to the very ugly. I definitely know what book I’ll be recommending to self-published authors whose work I didn’t end up enjoying. Even if you aren’t the best writer, I do think this is the kind of read which will at least get your writing to a decent standard.

I also found this book to be very clear cut and precise. Everything was worded so smoothly and simply. I didn’t have to search for meaning, and not once did I not understand what Diehl was trying to convey. When it comes to instructional or tip filled books, this is so important. If the reader can’t understand what you mean to say, you’re failing to deliver on your promise to help them. I am safe to say that wasn’t the case in this book at all.

I don’t really think there is too much else to say on this book. It served its purpose and went above and beyond what I expected to get from it. I will definitely recommend the book to other self-published or aspiring self-published authors, and hope that if it is one you might use you’ll check out getting a copy for yourself too!

The Source!

Author Gregory V. Diehl is an educator, podcaster and an entrepreneur and has published several books on identity development for businesses and individuals. He is also the founder of Identity Publications. Diehl travels to more than 50 countries and enjoys homesteading in Ecuador and Armenia

This book follows the author’s own rules! His object: to guide writers of self help books in a way that avoids the barriers and hurdles most new authors face when taking on such a project. IN this introductory message he sates, ‘Today, due to blogging, vlogging, podcasting, and (most pertinent to our purposes) self-publishing, it is easier than ever to communicate your ideas to the people most desperate to hear them. However, you may never have pondered what your message is, the forms it could take, or its influence upon those who will receive it. You might not yet appreciate the power of your influence over the thoughts and emotions of other people. As a self-published author, you will be the master of your own destiny. You will need to ask yourself many questions about what you are trying to say. Even if you think you know what you are talking about, do you have a detailed idea of the type of people you are trying to say it to? Do you understand how they should change after having read your words and assimilated your ideas? Without a specific purpose to your actions, your communication will fall flat. Ideas accomplish nothing without viable presentation. You will need to convince strangers, in moments, that the contents of your book constitute a worthwhile claim on their time and money. Your ideas will need to keep the reader’s attention throughout the text, so they will feel compelled to keep the pages turning. An influential author must wear many hats: as the creator, presenter, promoter, and consumer of valuable ideas. Understanding how human knowledge has been passed on throughout the generations and the importance some books have had for how we think and live pushed me into nonfiction writing and self-publishing.’

Gregory establishes seven aspects of the relationship between an author and their nonfiction book: philosophy, strategy, creation, refinement, presentation, promotion, and reward. Each of these areas is explored thoroughly and it becomes readily apparent that the ‘rules’ apply to all writers of nonfiction, no matter their stage of experience! Highly recommended.

I was intrigued by the title of this book, especially the subtitle: How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter. I have several stories brewing inside that I wasn’t certain how to get on paper. I’m happy to share that I now have a veritable book of authority on how to get those stories out of my head and into book format.

The book is written in 6 parts that cover everything from conception to creation and promotion. Diehl has done an excellent job of defining terms and aspects of publishing and writing that make it easy to understand what writing a nonfiction book entails. There is the creation part and then there is understanding the publishing aspect as well. Diehl even dives into the Amazon ad platform, though that part of the book will be specifically outdated as Amazon continues to change, it still lends a general understanding.

I appreciate the look forward to what comes after writing a book, the idea of an author's life or life publishing your own works, and continuing to create.

I love the dedication of the book--it is another testament to the encouragement Diehl offers readers. There is also a wonderful index and a section of resources included in the book.

At just over 400 pages, this book is a wealth of information. I’m grateful to have a copy that I can continue to highlight and glean from as I explore the nonfiction books inside of me. If you’re thinking about writing any type of nonfiction, I recommend reading this book and enjoying the journey of learning!

This is the go to guide for self-publishing your nonfiction book. I read several books about writing nonfiction and so far this is definitely the best one. Although I have not read any other books about publishing Gregory really does go deep into each and every aspect from the ratio of Kindle to publishing a paperback.

The reason why I believe this is the best book about writing your nonfiction book is because he Dives deep into the philosophical aspects. In order to write an influential nonfiction book you need to dive deep into your psyche as well as your potential readers psyche. He does a really good job of explaining and helping you to understand how to form your book from the beginning to the end.

There is no doubt in my mind that I will be returning to this book during the process of writing and Publishing my own nonfiction book in the coming year.

I highly recommend buying it if you are planning on writing your own nonfiction book. Even if you've already written one and plan on writing another one this book is worthy of your time and money.

Revealed Complexity:
Long ago I learned that the more I studied a topic, the more complexity I uncovered and the more I discovered what I didn’t know about that topic. Gregory Diehl’s seminal book, The Influential Author: How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter, taught me just how much I didn’t understand about writing and self-publishing a nonfiction book.

It should be easy, right? I sit at my computer and type out what I would say if we were face-to-face chatting about the topic of interest. Diehl quickly disabused me of that idea and set me straight on what it takes to author a book that matters. At the same time, he inspired me to write that book I haven’t gotten around to writing.

Organization:
Everything about Diehl’s book exactly demonstrates what he is inculcating. The organization of the content is no exception. The body of his work comprises seven parts: Philosophy, Strategy, Creation, Refinement, Presentation, Promotion, and Reward. He then adds a conclusion to draw all the content together and remind us what we have learned. Diehl packs each section with practical how-to information as well as the reasoning behind the directions given.

The front material includes a wonderful section titled, “Questions to Help You Get the Most from This Book.” Those questions did indeed help me watch for answers along the way. They kept me focused on my reasons for exploring authorship. Is the content of your book unique? Are your tone and presentation more effective than other authors? Why are you inspired to bring your message to the world? Who needs to read your message and why? There are many more questions waiting for you in that section.

The back material—Appendix: Resources, Acknowledgments, About the Author—proves to be just as informative and useful as the rest of the content. I’m sure I will be referring to the Appendix many times in the future. It is chock full of links to resources for each phase of my writing project.

Style:
The author’s writing style is informative without being overly didactic. He entertains with personal examples of success and failure. Diehl is personable, relaxed and yet authoritative in his presentation. The result of this presentation style is that I believe I have the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to writing, publishing and promoting a book. I will go into this project with my eyes open.

Bottom Line:
For me, the bottom line is reading this book built my writing confidence and was time well spent. I will undoubtedly read it again. I intend to have it by my side as a guide and resource when I embark on my writing adventure. Diehl’s is a must-read book for anyone who is blogging (who isn’t these days?), writing articles for social media, or embarking on a book project.

I just read The Influential Author: How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter. A word about that long subtitle in a moment. If you are considering writing and self-publishing, this book is valuable far beyond the purpose of a how-to guide. With over four-hundred pages, the book covers a vast amount of information. As a publisher, Identity Publications, Diehl is an expert. Whether you are a beginner pondering the ideas you hope to turn into a book, a dedicated writer in the midst of her career, or somewhere in-between looking back on the error of your ways and forward to improved writing and marketing, you will find help here.
First, Diehl practices what he recommends. Although I have self-published three books and learned more with each one, I see so much here that I can apply going forward and even ways to remedy mistakes I’ve made. For example, choosing a title is so much more than a catchy or well-turned phrase. Indeed, the subtitle should incorporate words that readers will guide readers in their search for (your) book (see Part 5: Presentation, Chapter 9, Elaborate Subtitles and Title Testing). While that may seem like common sense and is, I wish someone had told me that three years ago.
The structure of the book is user-friendly. He has outlined the chapters to tell readers what to expect, then summarized each one to show them what they got. He starts at the beginning with a why-to-write philosophy. He encourages beginners to be honest with themselves as to why (or if they really want to) write a book of nonfiction. Although The Influential Author is a good read from cover to cover, it’s also easy and practical to skip around to the information you want or need at that moment.
When I began reading, I found so many meaningful ideas that I began highlighting. “A great book is one that answers questions aching for resolution” (page vi). “Find a hole in the library of humanity and fill it” (page 22). “What are the benefits that come from knowing and talking to you?” (page 35).
Finally, along with encouragement, I interpret Diehl’s premise for self-publishing as hope. Without giving away his observations and insights, I found the last chapter entitled “Your Destiny as Author and Publisher for Life” surprisingly optimistic. Here is an author who understands other authors and offers philosophies along with a firm understanding of mechanics. The Influential Author is a must-read for contemporary writers because some of us will be able to change the world if we can just get our ideas out there.

This is the most comprehensive and complete book on how to write effectively and publish a book that I have found. It covers everything from the importance of writing through history, to successfully publicizing your work.
Though written to pave the way for first time authors, even if you have already published, you will find yourself described in these pages. The author, Gregory Diehl, displays an almost preternatural perception of the many reasons for which people may feel compelled to bring their message into the light of written knowledge. He leads you to understand your own “creative nature” and how to harness it to get your book written, published, and known.

You will find yourself in these pages many times, and so are likely to come across many helpful ideas to help you as you walk this pathway to success.

To me, this is what lifts this book above the others of its kind. It guides you to find the writer within yourself, and how to develop him or her to write and publish a successful book.

This is the best book on writing nonfiction that I’ve seen. It’s so thorough and talks about topics others don’t bother with. For example it starts off with the historical influence of writing and helping you think about what to write about. The strategy section talks about the book market and your message. The creation section is about the qualities of a writer and writing your first draft. Refinement is about editing and proofreading. Presentation covers book appearance and format. Promotion is about book launch and book traffic and exposure. Finally Reward is about what happens when you publish a book.

The book is very thick and chock FULL of information for every section. The resources section in the back includes links to tools and websites you can use for each section.

I’ve always wanted to write nonfiction but I can’t seem to settle on a topic I feel comfortable writing about. I will be keeping this book for when I figure it out though, that’s for sure.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

As an author, I love reading books from other self-publishers for tips, tools, advice, and various outlooks on the process. After reading dozens of books like this, I can honestly say that this book from Gregory Diehl is one of the best out there, and it doesn't get nearly enough credit. This is probably the most in-depth book I've read on being a self-published author. While most books like this cover some different agles or limit to one aspect of self-publishing or writing, Diehl covers them all. In this book you learn about researching your topic, creating an outline, coming up with a title, marketing your book, editing, and much more. Usually, I speed through books like this, but this book took me a while because I kept revisiting various sections to really soak in the wisdom. So, if you're an author or thinking about becoming one, get this book ASAP.

The Influential Author and its author were the greatest influence on me for finally writing and self-publishing my first book. That book is a professional guide in a difficult area of life based on my lifelong profession, and to my surprise there were virtually zero books about it on Amazon. That book has now been published (finally!) and is off to a great start on Amazon and we are bringing this much needed info to the public in a new format.

I don't think there is any greater guide available for the entire process, and I mean from the early stages of thinking and planning all the way through to publication day and everything that comes after. If you really read and take Gregory Diehl's advice to heart here, it will definitely change the way you think about nonfiction books and becoming an author. I cannot recommend it more. I am proud to include the hardcover on my bookshelf.

This book is very informative and eye opening about what goes into publishing, promoting, and formatting a book, beyond just putting words on a page. In a world where everything is portrayed as an easy process with so many options for self-publishing, I especially appreciate that Diehl is very clear to state that self-publishing is not an easy task, but is doable if you are willing to put in the work.

Even as someone who is not an author and not looking to self-publish a nonfiction book, I loved this in-depth work about the world behind the book that I may stop to peruse at my local bookstore.

I have always had an interest in writing, though I never tried to publish anything. This book caught my eye because I wanted to learn more about the entire process. And I am glad I did as this book was a really good read. I like how the author tackles commonly held myths and gives solutions right out the gate. It sure got me applying those to myself. And then the depth increases from there. The author is thorough in explaining the concepts and approaches. If you want to learn about the entire process, this book is worth checking out.

Gregory Diehl brings more than a decade of substantial experience on writing and independent publishing, all exposed in this book with insightful and practical tips that any indie author can and should apply.

Although it is meant for nonfiction authors who want to take a chance on self-publishing their books, The Influential Author offers several facts and advices which can be also beneficial for fiction writers. It's about getting grounded and familiarized with all the process that takes from creating your book to the moment of launching and promoting it.

To be true and focused on what inspired you to write that book, the meaning of its message, and why you want to share it with the world, will fuel your creativity and hustle to keep going your work. This book will help you get the gift you have inside to share it with the world and spread your message.

Through The Influential Author, you won't only get introduced to the process of self-publishing and all that it takes, but also the obstacles which you'll encounter on the path, the situations that may trigger you, and the cons which you must identify in order to avoid committing so many mistakes a new author could do at the beginning of their career.

To write down and develop your idea is just the first step in your writing career. After that honeymoon stage, you must continue with the editing process, the design and formatting of your book, the creation of your brand, promotion and launching, getting your book to be visible by positioning it in the right categories through the different forms and platforms, contacting readers and reviewers, and other steps you must consider if you want a successful future for your book and career.

For a better, comprehensive approach, the book is divided in seven parts:

1) Philosophy, where you must expose the social and historical context of your work, as well as its meaning, purpose, and influence to the world.
2) Strategy, or the plan you'll develop to take your message/book out into the virtual and physical world.
3) Creation, where you turn your idea into words.
4) Refinement, is about the stages of developing, editing, destructing, rearranging, proofreading, and every other step your book will endure to assure a high quality.
5) Presentation, how to make your book appealing enough to attract readers to it, and the best strategy of presenting your work/message through the most convenient title and subtitle, cover design, text formatting...
6) Promotion. Here you'll pick the best marketing strategy to find the way to get the attention your work requires and deserves. You'll need to give exposure to your book in order to attract traffic. You'll get familiarized with creating your brand, launching your book on different popular platforms, getting reviews and loyal readers.
7) Reward. This is the stage where your book will be creating value and generating passive revenues for as long as it is positioned in the market. It's all about you getting benefits from it and developing your professional image as an authority in what you convey.

The step-by-step explanation of the self-publishing process, the resources to help indie authors before and during the launch of their books, and the meaningful advices and words of support, make of this book a must-read in today's competitive literary society.

As you see Diehl's wide knowledge to the nonfiction literature, you'll realize the level of credibility of his work. I was so attracted by the examples of real titles and authors that gave a clearer view to the explanation of the whole process.

Self publish today is a challenge, and you have to take out your message, write that book, and promote your brand with such quality that readers won't regret picking your book.

For all this I give The Influential Author 4.8 stars. You can't let it pass!

Self-publishing isn’t just about books being sold; it’s also about words and writing. In The Influential Author, author Gregory Diehl, who may well be influential, draws readers in quickly with an overview of the history, importance, power and social dangers of words. As a Cambridge mathematician, I particularly love the reminder of the importance of, for examples, Newton’s Principia Mathematica, but readers from other fields will find much to intrigue them too, as the author explores censorship, science and even common sense in an overview of history and philosophy… in a book about writing! Of course, by modern times the philosophical questions just might devolve into self-publish or persist in seeking a publisher, and the author deals quickly and clearly with the timeline, royalty and creative control reasons for self-publishing.

Then there are the reasons for writing. Writing a book is hard. It’s not for everyone. It will take lots of thought and lots of time. Gregory Diehl’s The Influential Author starts with philosophy, communication and purpose; moving on to the structures of a book’s communication—scope, length and focus—and what makes it unique; then there are the tasks of creation, word counts, outlines and other practicalities; followed by editing in all its various forms; the format and presentation of your book (helpfully including audio-narration); and finally how to promote and sell so as to feel you’ve achieved something at the end. It’s a huge scope for a book about writing, and there’s a lot to read. But the book presents a pleasingly different approach from the usual self-help, anyone-can-do-it approach.

What matters more, the outcome (book) or the journey (writing the book); the focused thought or the rambling implication; who we are or who we’re seen to be? Such questions arise right at the start of this book, and the answers are argued eloquently and cogently, each chapter ending with a simple, straight-forward summary for those whose first inclination is to skim. But… do you write what you love or follow the author’s direction to find what will sell, and will Amazon’s ecosystem ever work in your favor. “By sticking to the book categories… and results will be more relevant to your goals as a bookseller…” but this reader’s losing sight of being a book-writer as she reads. “Sometimes an idea’s time just comes…”

The author’s fascinating philosophical start devolves into lists and numbers and personal examples as the book progresses – more like what the reader expects from the title perhaps. The book covers everything from writing style to editing to marketing to fame (or influence). The structure of a non-fiction book is nicely described, including explanations of copyright pages and glossaries. The writing process includes outlining, perspective, self-plagiarism (e.g. from your blog), punctuation, and even “cognitive stress load.” Much of the information might be available elsewhere, but this book collects it all together in one large volume, illustrating, perhaps, the art of adding wordcount to your book. Trying to choose a title? Designing a cover? Formatting a hardback copy? Recording your own audio-book? Wondering how much your book will sell for? Yes, all these are covered too.

The Influential Author collects lots of information on lots of topics into one large volume. A great resource for finding answers, a book that reads like listening to a series of lectures (and gives you the lecture notes in the chapter summaries), lots of personal anecdotes (and the joys of using your book to break the ice with strangers), and more… It’s well worth reading and keeping to hand for useful information.

Disclosure: I was given an ecopy and I offer my honest review. It’s a long and useful read.

I thought this book was going to be your typical "how to write" book -- a lot of fluff, a little entertainment, a fair amount of how-to information that's only useful to beginners, and maybe one tiny nugget of gold that makes the book worth spending time on, maybe.

It's much more than that.

This book is meticulously written, highly detailed, and goes over almost everything about the subject that you could possibly imagine wanting to know.

This could be considered a weakness, because it takes a long time to read and digest it all! But I consider it a strength, because it's so well-written and compelling that it's fun to read, and doesn't feel like it's wasting my time anywhere. This is particularly meaningful when you consider that I'm the kind of reader who typically likes concise and succinct books, and this book is definitely not concise or succinct.

This is probably the best book you'll find on its specific subject, and probably one of the best how-to-write books out there in general, too. It's very good. If this is the genre you want to write in, it's probably a good book for you to buy and read. There's so much information in the book that it'll have something for everybody, even experienced writers.

THE BOOK, “THE INFLUENTIAL AUTHOR” HOLDS A WEALTH OF INFORMATION ABOUT WRITING, PUBLISHING, AND MARKETING! IT’S A MUST-READ! WOW!

I devoured every single word of this over 400-page epic non-fiction writing, publishing, and marketing guide by Gregory V. Duehl! The author’s photo on the back cover of the book shows a young boy’s photo whom I learned is closer to 30 years-old—making me wonder how such a young person can hold such wisdom, can have written multiple bestselling books, and is the founder of Identity Publishing! Wow!! I am impressed! If you are a brand-new writer or a seasoned author, this book will be of great value to you! For me, as an experienced writer since 1987 but new to self-publishing, it was an incredible review of so many important aspects of the writing/publishing process. The marketing process addressed in this book is filled with equally clear and valuable information that I needed to know. Even the 8-page Resources section is so incredibly useful! Thank-you, Gregory, for taking the time to give your readers a full representation of this topic! Your book has certainly enriched my writing and my life! I highly recommend it!!

'm very impressed with this book. It covers a lot of ground and is packed with great detail. Anyone who is contemplating writing a nonfiction book MUST give The Influential Author a look. Diehl leaves no stone unturned. He explains virtually everything one needs to understand and be aware of before writing the first sentence. Diehl writes in a plain, straightforward manner which is much appreciated. He's very effective in communicating important concepts and numerous practical tips. Thankfully the book is not a collection of platitudes and backslaps for insecure dreamers. Diehl is honest enough to lay out the bad stuff right along with the good. Readers will find much encouragement and plenty of reason to shoot for success here, but they also will be asked to face some uncomfortable truths. Writing is extremely hard. Promoting a book is very difficult as well. Marketing is often a confusing and frustrating process. But this book can make everything easier. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite quotes from this book is “Unknown authors who write with genuine authenticity and authority will outshine unknown authors who write with ulterior motives”. That resonates with me, as the way it should be.

The book is packed with pertinent information, including philosophical discussion tempered with practical advice which will move any beginner forward. Every chapter holds a host of information to be mined. My favorites were ‘Positioning Your Book in Amazon’s Ecosystem’, which is particularly enlightening with its long lists of examples, and the one on ‘Titling’, again with many relevant examples to browse.

This is a book you will dip into time and time again; a thorough guide to writing and positioning your book. Plus so much more!

As a sometimes wannabe writer, I was very curious about Gregory V. Diehl's book, The Influential Author. I've been reading books about writing for many years, so I wondered how the text would stack up to others.

First, at well over 400 pages, the book is comprehensive. Diehl begins with social and theoretical explorations of writing, which I did not expect but found very interesting to read. Then, the author turns his attention to market concerns and practical advice about the writing process.

I enjoyed The Influential Writer as a reader who writes, but also as a teacher. I would consider using this book as a recommended resource for upper-level writing students who wish to see their work in print, and I think the philosophical sections would make great material for classroom discussion.

Finally, I must add a word or two about the wonderful organization of the book. Diehl is thoughtful about previewing the content for us at the beginning, guides us with headings (as any great nonfiction writer ought to do), and caps each chapter with a helpful summary.

All in all, the book works as a considerable volume about craft and balances the practical with the theoretical.

Gregory Diehl has written THE ultimate guide to nonfiction book publishing. Nothing is assumed and nothing is left out. A complete masterwork on everything you need to know, do, be, and have for a successful book that will promote your business and your brand for years. The book does a great job of including both strategic and tactical advice - from what you need to do months and months before publication - to initial promotion - and what you must continue to do on a daily basis to make sure your book continues to serve your business. A total home run. Stop browsing. BUY. THIS. BOOK.

The Influential Author: How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter is a most useful resource and wealth of information. I read it through several times, not because I didn't understand what was written, but because I wanted to make sure I was able to absorb as much as possible. Gregory Diehl has done a phenomenal job at detailing how to write, publish, and sell nonfiction books. His book is well laid out and easy to understand. I highly recommend The Influential Author: How and Why to Write, Publish, and Sell Nonfiction Books that Matter to any author who is writing and publishing for the first time or who has previously published a manuscript. I will be sharing Gregory Diehl's book with my writing critique group.

I found this book to be a goldmine of information, intended for those who want to become successful non-fiction authors.

It is very difficult to do justice with this review of just how much information is offered. The book is quite lengthy but I found it worthwhile because the information offered is solid and practical. The author Gregory has much experience and authority to write a book such as this - and this comes through quite clearly. His tone is sincere and I found the style he writes in to be very engaging.

A detailed list of practical tools and services useful to write, publish and sell your book is also offered.

This is a very useful book - comprehensive and compelling - and one I would recommend to all aspiring non-fiction authors.

Gregory V. Diehl's guide to the non-fiction book writing process is a thorough and accessible road map for budding authors with big ideas. Diehl does a nice job of breaking down the process of brainstorming, organizing, drafting, revising, publishing, and promoting. The book includes handy highlights and examples, and it's easy to find what you're looking for if you're particularly interested in certain phases of the process.

As a fiction writer and academic writing advisor, I particularly enjoyed the author's philosophical thoughts on the history and purpose of writing. The book also includes brisk, on-point refreshers on common grammatical and mechanical issues, and worthwhile commentary on conventional advice, while empowering writers to foster their own unique voices to target their unique audiences. All around a great book for anyone with "a book inside them" looking for a "big picture" overview of the writing and publishing process.

This is the first and only book you need to self publish your book. It is mostly geared to the nonfiction book. Diehl put a great deal of time into research and details into making this book complete. Everything you need to know, he has thought of. I recommend this book for the novice writer or expert.

I received a copy of this book directly from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review.

It took me a long time to decide how I was going to rate and review The Influential Author by Gregory Diehl. On the one hand, there are some tips and advice held within this book that are solid… but that’s about all I can say about the book that’s positive. This book missed its mark. 90% of the book is not useful information – it’s self-aggrandizing philosophizing and “fluff”. The book is incredibly dense, dry, and hard to get through. I started skimming very early on because I got tired of wading through the thesaurus of words being spewed out to get to a useful piece of advice. It completely missed the mark of what a self-help book is meant to be…something easy to read through and grasp for its audience – something attention-grabbing.

There was nothing in this book that made me want to keep reading. I was bored. I skimmed. I didn’t learn anything that wasn’t the bare basics of writing – and what the author tried to teach his readers about writing influential non-fiction –the entire namesake of the book itself – was lost, because he didn’t apply the very basics of writing to your audience to his own work. Who is meant to read this? Your everyday person who scraped by learning the very basics in high school? That’s all the information is useful for, and they aren’t going to make it through the incredibly dense text. So, I gave this 1 star – because I stopped reading. If you’re looking for a good book on writing, there are better more accessible ones out there.

Listened to the audiobook first, found it incredibly helpful, so I bought the hard copy. I actually enjoyed all of the content the book offers.
The narration was done well, the content was valuable, and I like the way it was written. Great book for new authors, and perhaps even for experienced authors to gain a new perspective.
Very few books provide the kind of insight that Gregory does in this book - the content in this book actually takes the reader from the idea of starting a book all the way to publishing and marketing it.
