Holly Webb is one of Britain's best-loved children's writers. She has written over a hundred books for children, and her work has been translated into over thirty languages. Holly lives in Tilehurst, just outside of Reading, Berkshire, with her husband, three children and several cats.
Lotta and her parents have left their home, and are on their way to gather at Lotta’s Mormor and Morfar’s house, where Oldemor will also be. They are waiting for them to arrive at their house in Norway. It was Lotta’s first trip to Norway, and although she had met her grandparents, Mormor and Morfar, she had never met her great-grandmother, Oldemor. She’s excited to finally meet Oldemor, but she’s at least as excited to see the reindeer that her mother has told her about in her favourite bedtime stories, stories about Oldemor’s life as a reindeer herder. She can’t wait to see the reindeer for herself.
After a busy day and evening celebrating Oldemor’s 90th birthday with a house filled with relatives, Lotta is tired of the noise created by all the people, and Oldemar invites her to come sit with her in her room, where she tells her Lotta about her dress, which she only wears for special occasions now, and the history of this Sami dress, and tells her about how many things have changed since then.
One night, Lotta falls asleep and wakes up, and notices that the room looks completely different, and even her clothes don’t seem to be her own. She feels she is living in a dream world, as though she’s fallen into one of her great-grandmother’s stories, and it’s quite the adventure, as she, along with all of the others, are helping to herd the reindeer to the birthing grounds. One calf is born along the way, which makes for an additional adventure for Lotta and another girl, Erika, as they try to save the calf, whose mother has not been found.
This is not your typical Christmas story, although it is set during the Christmas holiday, and would make a nice adventure story to read in the days leading up to the holiday, or any time.

The book gives us a view of Norway through the eyes of Lotta who visits the country the first time to meet her great-grandmother Oldemor. The book captures the life of the Sami herding reindeer long ago. The ending is unexpected, and I found myself crying happy tears.
*Make sure you and/or your child read and learn the words at the back of the book BEFORE reading the book. Unless, of course, you already know what a beaska, joik, lavvu, and etc are.
Surprisingly good. Make sure you read the book or read it aloud because you will want to be able to share your child’s experience of the story and discuss it.
https://bookwormsandshutterbugs.wordp... Holly Webb has been a real find through Net Galley, for me. The beautiful cover illustrations initially drew me to these books. They are definitely the sort of book I would look to buy for a young bookworm for Christmas. They are well illustrated throughout and the story carries a message and a lovely warm Christmas feeling.
Lotta visits her grandmother in Norway- an idyllic setting. The story is about helping to look for a missing reindeer to save it’s calf- and you can just picture the sled going through the crisp snow with their breath in the air whilst they search.
Holly has a lovely educational style to her writing- you learn about the setting and the animals through the wonderful storyline.
It also has a wonderful relationship between the grandmother and child- it would make such a perfect gift.
With many thanks to Net Galley for a copy of this wonderful book.
I received this ebook in exchange for an honest and fair review. I enjoyed this book very much. The author wove a wonderful story which gave us a glimpse of life in Norway many lifetimes before her. I enjoyed reading about how difficult life was and how a child had such strength and endurance. This book can help start a dialogue with students about other individuals and the differences and similarities.
Most of the time I give Holly Webb books five stars, but this book I give four stars because of the Wolves chapter. I really love wolves and I hated how they got scared away, although that would be bad if the girls and the calf died.
Loved it! Such a heartwarming story about a girl of Nordic descent, who loves reindeer so much, that she manages to change the fate of a baby reindeer who was born a long time ago.
How do you write a Christmas story for children that isn't really a Christmas story? Write about reindeer, a little girl, and a country that we often think of as being in a perpetual Christmas look - Norway.
Lotta is a little girl who is traveling to Norway to spend time with her grandparents and her great-grandmother. Lotta makes a special connection with her great-grandmother (her Oldemor) and loves to hear the stories of Oldemor when she was younger and a reindeer herder.
Through dreams and desire, Lotta finds herself in one of Oldemor's stories when Lotta and a cousin are responsible for a mother reindeer (Flower) and her calf (Karl). When the reindeer get separated from the herd, Lotta must find them, protect them from all sorts of danger, including wolves, and get them safely back to the herd.
This is a sweet story and it has just the right amount of excitement and danger to be exciting to a young reader/listener.
Author Holly Webb brings in some magic by weaving in some idyllic history of a simpler life. But we come to realize that simpler isn't without different kinds of dangers.
It's the Christmas season and we get all the wintry good feels of Christmas, and of course there are reindeer, but we don't actually celebrate either a religious or a secular Christmas. It's the perfect book to get young readers in the Christmas mood, and youngsters who love animals will be especially drawn to this story.
I enjoyed the glossary - I learned a few things about the Nordic and Sami cultures from the glossary.
The book is lightly illustrated with wonderful drawings by Simon Mendez.
Looking for a good book? The Reindeer Girl by Holly Webb is a sweet story that is sure to become a favorite holiday book for some young readers.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher, through Netgalley, in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review.
I requested this book because I loved the synopsis and the cover was really cute. :) Lotta is from Nordic descent and is visiting her grandmother...she is drawn to the reindeer and she loves hearing old stories from her grandmother. This time she learns about another Lotta from the past, a cousin from long ago. When she takes a nap, she becomes this Lotta from the past...and she gets to know her grandmother as a child and she learns about how life was back then. Along the way, she meets the reindeer that belonged to the family and one of them is a baby. The family is taking Momma and baby to the calfing grounds so they can be with the rest of the babies and mothers...on their journey, Lotta takes it upon herself to protect that baby reindeer from everything she can...During one of the nights, the mother reindeer falls behind and when her "parents" say they can't go back for her, Lotta has to make a decision that could get her into trouble, at the very least. But she knows that without his mother's milk, the baby will die AND the mother will most likely die. The rest of the story goes on to show how much difference our Lotta made in the lives of those reindeer and that just maybe you can change the past.
The Reindeer Girl is a lovely story by Holly Webb. All of the other stories I have read by this author were concerning animals who needed or had new owners. This story is different. The main character and her family visits her grandparents and great-grandmother in Norway.
Perfect story for third grade reader giving historical and cultural aspects of the Sami who were reindeer herders in Norway. The illustrations enrich the story without overpowering the text. Lotta, the main character is a girl but anyone would enjoy learning about the Sami culture through her experience. Along the way there is a lesson about never leaving adults behind to be learned as she is in danger at times. Children may need help in seeing the truth of that. However, it has a mystical element that children will love.
While the story stakes place at Christmas, it can be enjoyed any time of the year. Nonetheless this beginning novel would make a wonderful stocking stuffer to be appreciated during the winter months that follow the holidays. It may actually be this grandmother’s favorite Holly Webb to date.
The publisher through Net Galley provided a digital ARC. I have voluntarily decided to read and review, giving my personal opinions and thoughts.
Lotta is on her very first visit to Norway and can’t decide if she is more excited to meet her Oldemor (great-grandmother), Erika, for the first time or to catch a glimpse of the reindeer that color her great-grandma’s stories with so much wonder and excitement.
But it just so happens that neither one disappoints, for one evening, just before Christmas, Lotta dozes off to the sound of another story and wakes to find herself in an altogether different, but just as enchanting world. Only there will she discover whether or not she truly carries the heart of a reindeer girl within her.
It is rare indeed to find a children’s story woven with such enchantment and wonder that both adults and children alike will find themselves reluctant to put it down. Filled to the brim with charming illustrations and rich information about Norwegian and Sami culture, The Reindeer Girl will not only sweep you away on a magical adventure, but will also leave you with a fresh appreciation for wildlife and the precious stories our grandparents and great-grandparents have to tell us, if only we’d curl up by the fire and listen.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book, which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

When Lotta's family travels to Norway to spend time with her grandparents and great-grandmother, she is thrilled to meet reindeer and to learn about some of the family's Christmas traditions. Lotta quickly bonds with Oldemor, and while the elderly woman tells her about some of her adventures, somehow Lotta finds herself in them. She and her cousin Erika are responsible for taking care of a mother reindeer they name Flower, and her calf, Karl. After getting separated from the main herd, Flower and Karl are in danger, and the girls set out to find the reindeer while everyone else is sleeping. They face treacherous water, cold temperatures, and wolves. The author weaves in the past and present seamlessly in this appealing story. While it might be hard to believe, I was caught up in the spell of the story Oldemor is telling and Lotta is living. The back matter includes a glossary, information on reindeer, and a map and snippets about the Sami, the cultural group of which Oldemor is a part.
What an adorable and well-written story! In it, the young girl protagonist visits her mother's ancestral home in Norway. In a magical twist, she becomes a part of her great-grandmother's stories. The book is written in a clean and approachable writing style that can be easily read and understood by early readers or enjoyed as a read-aloud. The black-and-white drawings provide insight into what life was like back in the day. I thought it was great that this book focused on Sami culture, which is not well known in the US. Not every Scandinavian is a blue-eyed blond! A great way to teach about another culture and time through story.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
The reindeer girl is an adorable Christmas story about a little girl who goes to visit her family for Christmas. After hearing stories about the reindeer herding her great grandmother did as a child Lolita wakes up in another time and body. She must now help move the reindeer and find a missing one before its too late.
This is a nice story for anyone during the Christmas season. It's not a long one but there are some details that could have been left out in places. It makes it feel more like your reading about facts and not a adventure story. Other than that I liked it.
The art throughout is a nice touch as well.
I received an advanced copy through netgalley in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.
Lotta goes to Norway with her family to celebrate her great-grandmother, Erika’s birthday. Lotta grew up listening to stories about reindeer herding from her mother and great-grandmother. Lotta loves reindeers and wishes she had a reindeer to take care of.
Lotta’s wish comes true, she travels back in time to when her great grandmother is a kid and Lotta is her cousin. Lotta and Erika embark on a dangerous journey to save the Reindeer mother and calf, who were in their care.
This book is a great read for middle graders who like diverse literature and want to learn about Norway's culture, customs, and Reindeers.
Myself and my four year old daughter (who will not let me stop reading to her) have just finished this lovely read by Holly Webb. It was a lovely little story for younger readers and packed full of information on reindeer, surviving in the cold and the Sami people. The story is beautiful for the younger readers and there are information pages at the back for the eager learners, not to mention the cute cover. A lovely bedtime story to last for a couple of days. Friendship, reindeer, facts and adventure...a great reading journey for them.
So excited to have found this story! I haven't ever found stories about the Sami culture and this one will make a fine addition to a collection looking to fill in some cultural books. I like Lotta and her family! It would make a nice days before Christmas book as the story takes place over Christmas. The only thing I think the book needed was full page color illustrations; the line drawings just weren't enough. Maybe shorter format as a picture book? It was an enjoyable read. I received a Kindle arc from Netgalley in exchange for a fair review.
Thank you to Netgalley and Tiger Tales for a free digital copy for my review.
This is a fun and magical story of Lotta going to visit her grandmother and great grandmother in Norway. One night Lotta falls asleep listening to one of her great grandmother's stories and finds herself whisked away to the world of her great grandmother's childhood and the dangers and delights of herding reindeer in an Artic winter. I thought the book was full of fun information, great illustrations, and quite the adventure!
Holly Webb was the writer of my childhood, and, since I was 7 to early 11, I read 42 books written by her. It was my start as a fellow reader and I left these books for others, but there are some of Holly Webb’s books that will always have a place in my heart. (My first one was “Lost in the Snow”, which I firstly read as a 7 y o.) Also, I always had a fondness for wintery stories, so I just added these 5. :D
I requested and received an e-ARC of this book from Holly Webb and Tiger Tales through NetGalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
I loved this story! The bond between Lotta and her Oldemor is beautiful. I loved learning about the Sami culture, their connection to reindeer, and some of the words they use to describe family, clothing, and animals. Highly recommend!
A beautiful story that captivated my daughter's attention. That's not always an easy thing to do. I love books that teach lessons and give children the opportunity to learn about a different culture and that's exactly what this book does. I can't wait to read more from this author and my daughter is already asking for me which means that we have a successful book read.
I got an advanced copy of The Reindeer Girl, by Holly Webb. This is book 2 of 5 in the Winter Journey collection. Its Lotta's first trip to Norway, and the first time meeting her great-grandmother. The story is great and I love the pictures. Lotta want to be a Reindeer girl, like her great grandmother, will she able to. Such a cute story, sure to be a classic.
I really liked this book. I loved the way Lotta traveled back in time to see how her great grandma and her family used to live as a reindeer herders. It was a very good book for me as I love animals and history.
