After barely escaping with their lives, the crew of the Orion has scattered across an unknown world. With a diminishing hope of returning home, they have no choice but to band together.
But between the local wildlife, lack of supplies, a missing crew, and a strange, ominous door that can't be opened, Dean and his new friends will need everything at their disposal to survive.
This isn't the home they expected, but they didn't come this far to give up and die.
Explore a strange new world and fight for the future in this second entry to The Orion Colony series.
“To everyone who’s gotten knocked down following their dreams. You get back up. You don’t give up. That’s not who we are.” Jonathan Yanez This second installment in the series takes us to an unexpected and harrowing scenario, the surviving colony stranded on an unknown planet full of dangerous creatures, thrilling adventures, twisted turns, and astounding surprises! Grittier than the first, this story is a page turner, action guaranteed. Looking forward to read the next exploits of the colony! A recommended series!
This one has alot more meat to it 👍🪐 we get more back story about the Main Character. The setting of the new world our colony is settling on, is pretty darn good. I will be reading on in the series for sure.
First off, this book seems short. If I remember correctly, the first book was also short or at least it seemed that way. Anyway, the story does get told, but leaves everything open for another book in the series. For this one, you’ll remember that the Orion, an Earth colony ship, crashed on some uncharted planet after a member of the Disciples (a terrorist group) planted a bomb in the engine room. Stacy Wilson, a Civil Authority Special Agent, was looking for Disciple members while the ship was being built. They had tried to prevent the ship from leaving Earth. The Disciples are a group of Transients who don’t believe in human genetic manipulation as done by the Eternals. The Eternals have extended their live-span to almost immortality via gene manipulation. Of course, this treatment costs a lot of money and only the wealthy were able to afford it. So now Earth is divided into the Eternals and the Transients. Most Transients don’t care one way or another.
One Transient is Dean Slade. He’s a mechanic on the Orion construction crew and has no intention of leaving Earth on this ship. But, circumstances beyond his control change things until he finds himself aboard the Orion and helping Stacy track down a Disciple. They catch one, but not the other one and that causes the Orion to crash land on the planet they know nothing about. The ship didn’t make it down in one piece. In fact, the ship has been scattered all over the planet with escape pods and shuttles flung everywhere. Dean and Stacy find each other and then some more colonist and lead them to a large remanent of the Orion. There they meet with a large contingent of surviving colonist and the leaders, Elon and Arun, both Eternals.
After getting things kind of organized, two groups head out to find more colonist and to find the communications equipment somewhere on another piece of the ship. Stacy and Dean head join the search for more colonist. While their current group is about 2,000 or so, the Orion carried over 150,000 colonist! It also held in its brig, one of the Disciples that Stacy and Dean captured before the ship blew up. It was thought that he died in the crash, but Dean believes he saw someone in the dark shadows and now believes it to be the terrorist. Dean and Stacy’s party are heading out to a large piece of the Orion and to find the piece that contained the brig. They want to confirm whether or not the crash did kill the terrorist.
Unfortunately, they find something far more serious. While the planet doesn’t seem to have an alien civilization, it did seem to have one in the past. What happened to that civilization is a mystery, but the colonist do know that something lurks in the forest several kilometers from where they are now located. In fact, Dean was on one of the exploratory expeditions into the forest where one of the colonist was killed by something. Now the forest have become off-limits while they hope whatever is in there doesn’t come out. Again, unfortunately, it doesn’t stay in the forest.
This is a pretty good story. There seems to be only one action taking place at a time so it’s not that hard to keep the story-line straight. Most of the story centers around Dean and Stacy as they are the main characters. Dean’s character sees more development in this book. He’s got a past that we just now find out about. It’s interesting and doesn’t distract from the main story, but does fill the book. Nothing really is revealed about Stacy, but I’m sure she will get her story told later.
As mentioned at the end of the book, “Orion Awakened” will be coming in January 2019. Hey, that’s this month so I’ll be on the look out for it.
Short but packed full of adventure. Lots of death, some aliens and always the struggle to overcome. Overcome adversity, the loss of loved ones and crash landing on an alien planet. Okay overall, yet it still felt like it was only a part of the whole story. It should have been double or triple the size. I will be reading the third book, though.
Yep, now we're rolling. I like the story but man, Ray Porter. There's a reason he's a favorite narrator of mine.
So here we go, the ship has crashed and now we've got all kinds of crazy things happening on the planet. No idea where they are, could be there are still operatives at play in the faction that essentially wrecked the ship. Pieces of the ship are everywhere. Survivors are around but some of them have gone completely bonkers. Are they zombies? Are they cognizant? Because they sure do want to kill everyone.
And they do kill a lot of the population. But something's afoot and must be stopped!
This story really does move along quickly. Doesn't race, gets all the details covered but isn't overwritten. I like that. It's more episodic than not. And I'm on to the next one.
I am of several minds on this book. I DID NOT like this authors previous series, too much meaningless cursing and uninteresting plot. HOWEVER, I am enjoying this story. BUT, I feel like the character development is slow, you really only have a good take on the main character. The romantic love interest is moving faster than expected for someone so troubled by their past. I feel like the first two books could have been combined into one story. I will keep reading.
It definitely held my attention, but the story is wildly unrealistic and had story lines that were very similar to things I had seen before (including on the original Star Trek). Plus I don’t understand the Eternals. How old are the two on Orion? What specifically are their abilities other than being able to regrow limbs and live forever? How did they become eternal? Why aren’t they making the rest of the humans on the expedition eternals? Why are they in charge? Do they have some special l, heightened intellect? It doesn’t appear so. I could do the same with every aspect of the story.
After crash landing on a strange planet, some of the survivors are setting up camp around the largest piece of the Orion. Dean thinks he sees the Disciple in the jungle and Iris can now see more of the planet. Large closed doors have been found as well as some other parts of the ship, including the jail. They head over to try and confirm whether the Disciple survived the 'landing'. Screams are heard from the jungle. What could've in there.... We also learn some more of Dean's backstory and what happened to his wife (and why). An action packed tale...
The Orion is looking for another planet to colonize. A fresh start. A better life. Unfortunately, their journey has been sabotaged from the very start. An explosion in flight causes them to crash on an unknown planet. The inhabitants are infected from a strange virus, and immensely start attacking the survivors. This is an amazing read. Enjoyed immensely!!
...but still nowhere near the same caliber as Backyard Spaceship. Book is short and skips over a lot of fluff needed to establish characters and plot. Only two books into the series, and the moment a new character is introduced, you know they will be killed off soon. There are other little things to nitpick, but this book is still better than what's currently on TV.
The book is really slow but easy to read. Just a couple action segments. I didn't quite get that so many colonist had been infected with the spores that turned them into zombies. And the actions of the zombies were rather unreal; just trying to kill more and more of the colonists. The end of the book has a surprise that will likely be explained in then book.
This has too many more inconsistent hand to hand fights and the flammable bombs part was not very well done. Also calling religiously inclined people "Religious nuts" several times will lose you fans who loved your other works. I would change that immediately.
Orion has crashed onto an unknown planet. The colonists have crashed across a large area and getting them all gathered together will be a massive effort. There is also a massive door built into a cliff side nearby and nobody can open it. There’s a lot to do and Dean finds himself pushed to the forefront again despite his reluctance.
Another fun book from J.N. Chaney. I enjoyed the first Orion book and this one as well. I am looking forward to the next book. I would say this is one long story so expect it to kind of just end and not be at an ending. It looks like there are 4 books in the series and hopefully the story ends there and not just something where he never got around to finishing. I guess I will find out!
Whilst I'm enjoying the story, I've now read two books but feel like they could have easily been rolled into one and still without having reached its conclusion.
I believe the 3rd book is due in 2019 so I will have to wait to see if this book brings the story to a close.
I have enjoyed reading this series along with his renegade series. The main characters are believable and I find it easy to fall into their lives. My only frustration is the stories tend to and too quickly. It could be because I’m just reading them too fast.
Messers JNC and JY have created an enthralling spin off. A great story with a strong theme and engaging characters. I’m very much looking forward to reading the next book.
Not too sure if I am becoming a speed reader or if these books just thrust me so thoroughly and completely into the thick of the action where I just can't stop before I run out of book .
These are two of my favorite authors and once again they have started a new series with a well developed adventure line. Am reading book three and looking forward to another fun read
This is losing steam for me. It started out as a potentially space operatic sci fi but it's turned into a lost world adventure novel with (sort of ) zombies and frankly that's not my cup of tea. The writing is fine but the story is just going in directions that don't interest me.
This is a good sequel to the first book, although I imagine it and the next book could have been folded together to make a trilogy instead of a quadrilogy. The romance begins to ramp up, and the protagonist proves his worth to the colony.
I hope to get your next book and continue reading this adventure,it is getting better with each chapter. I hope you have the next one out before too long. Thank you
