There are mythicals and monsters. Which kind wants her dead?

There was a time Marissa van Dyke loved Halloween. Then tragedy struck. Now the sight of a jack-o-lantern only reminds her of what she’s lost. In fact, she’d prefer to just hibernate.

But recently her nightmares are becoming too intense to ignore. Dreams filled with horror-movie creatures that come closer to killing her every time. Where these vampires and werewolves are coming from, she doesn’t know. She only knows they’re relentless.

Neil Drigan has no interest in finding a mate. Bind himself to one woman? No thank you. Permanent is for the wolf pack Alpha–his brother. Yet lately he persistently dreams about running, in full wolf form, to save a beautiful woman who smells of flowers–and death.

At first the woman’s identity is a mystery, until he realizes the dreams are a residual imprint of something that really happened. Not only is the woman temptation wrapped in real flesh and blood, she’s still in danger. And the one thing he never thought he wanted.

USA Today and NY Times bestselling author Candice Gilmer leads a dangerous double life as a mommy and a writer. In between boo-boo healing and fixing broken toys, she writes stories usually to the tune of children's television shows.

Growing up in the Midwest, Candice stays close to her family, especially the ones with basements when the tornadoes come around.

All in all, she stays very busy, but really, she wouldn't have it any other way.

Well, maybe a little less children's television.

Lately, Neil Drigan has been dreaming of saving a beautiful woman who smells of flowers and death until he realizes that it’s not a dream it’s a memory and that she is still in danger in this thrilling paranormal romance.

Marissa Van Dyke’s nightmares are becoming too intense to ignore as the horror-movie creatures come closer to killing her each time and the reader can’t help but get caught up in the story as Neil helps Marissa face her fears and realize that there are monsters and then there are monsters who want her dead. The chemistry is a sweet seduction of heat and passion while the sex scenes are hot and steamy but the relationship hovers on the brink of disaster as reality rears its ugly head and secrets are revealed. These strong, compelling characters grab the reader’s attention while the fast paced smooth flowing plot thrills reader with suspense, turmoil and romance.

Marissa is under attack but she doesn’t realize just how deadly her adversary is with expectation and tension building throughout the story as the danger escalates and Marissa slowly comes to realization that monsters are very real causing some intense emotional issues which are complicated by her personal demons. Vivid imagery captures the imagination while the intriguing events draw the readers in and makes it easy for them to become absorbed in all the excitement.

So far, this series is proving to be fascinating and full of sexy, captivating characters and I have enjoyed every second of it. I do want to point out that while this can be read without reading Brightest Shadow, that there is more than one bad guy, there is also an evil master mind in the shadows that has some very nefarious plans that the Knights aren’t aware yet.

This is barely 2 stars, only by the skin of its teeth. The premise of this book is great, the actual writing is good, and what I’m guessing is the story arch for the whole series seems really promising. However, this is the 2nd book in the series and the 2nd time the heroine was complete trash. I honestly don’t know who was worse, Kelsey or Marissa, but I hated them both.

Reading this book, I couldn’t honestly tell you how old Marissa is, but she acts like she’s 14. She has the emotional maturity of an eight year old and it shows. She gets mad and butt-hurt over EVERYTHING and will turn it into a fight or a reason to keep people out of her life. Even her friends get sick of her bullshit and call her out on it, but she doesn’t do anything to fix it. An example of her bullshit is after she goes on a date with Neil she invites him inside. He declines, she gets unnecessarily angry that he won’t come in because he doesn’t want to have sex on the first date. He then swears on his father’s grave that he’s interested in her and likes her, he just doesn’t want to fuck her on the first date, and she vilifies him for it. The kicker is, before this point she says to herself and others on multiple occasions that she’s not looking for a man or a fling.

I understand wanting a tortured character, or a flawed one, they can be really interesting and when done right show an awesome amount of personal growth, but Marissa isn’t one of those. She’s just an emotionally immature bitch who, in her best friend’s words, needs to go back to therapy to fix herself. I felt so bad for Neil because even while he’s dealing with his own stuff and identity issues, he makes a point of being consistent with Marissa and she just shits all over him.

Two books in a row with horrible heroines and I’m losing hope for this series.

Second book in this series deals with Neil Drigan , the family playboy. Liked him from the first book and was waiting for him to find his mate too. He keeps having dreams about rescuing a woman but has a hard time remembering the whole thing.
She only remembers parts of the rescue herself and is not sure it really happened. She is drawn to him but scared of the relationship too. She has a thing about Halloween from her past and ends up at a Halloween party at his family home. Some bad things are happening and she is right in the middle of it. This is a good series and will read the others soon.
Neil and Marissa make a good couple.

I am a little short on time. I just have to say I love how the family is able to come together even when they want to strangle each other when someone is in trouble. They are able to help Neil's mate get herself back to her right state of mind so she doesn't keep on living a half life just because she is feeling guilty about surviving while her family is dead. It's a great story.

Marissa’s life changed the night her family was killed. Halloween night. To some extent it ended at that moment for the survivor’s guilt has stopped time for Marissa. Her circle of friends is closing, she rarely goes out of the safety of her home, only to work and the book club her mother had belonged to. Evenings out with friends are rare. Which is why it was odd for her to be out with friends this night, unusual that she would stay behind to comfort an acquaintance as she cleaned up the bar before closing.

The attack came suddenly. One moment she was walking to her car, the next she was on the ground and trying to avoid her attacker. She was vaguely aware of a wolf who came to fight off her attacker, and she watched that monster fly off into the night sky while the wolf stayed beside her keeping her safe and warm.

Neil should have been safely locked up at his family’s compound this night of the full moon. It was a precaution he and his brothers took so that the power of the full moon would not overtake their own common sense. Werewolves were not known for logic during that particular phase of the moon. Yet here he was, racing across the parking lot tackling this monster who dared to lay his hands on this woman… a woman who smelled of floral perfume. He didn’t understand why, but this woman was special to him and no one would harm her.

Dark Within brings us Neil and Marissa’s story. As the second oldest son, Neil is considered a playboy, a man who will never settle down. For Neil it’s more a fear of letting go of his control and a conviction that there is no special woman out there somewhere for him alone. Marissa is a wounded soul. Her friendship with Kelsey has gone through some changes since her marriage to David. They no longer had the time to spend endless evenings together and of course there was the not really trusting or believing in their whirlwind courtship and marriage. Yet it is to Kelsey that Marissa turns for help which brings her into closer contact with Neil.

There is an underlying sense of urgency, of battle lines being drawn and an army collected – from the enemy’s side. Right now the mystical beasts of town really don’t yet know the full extent of the danger they will be in. Neil will continue his pursuit of Marissa – and she will continue to hold on to her memories of the past. Until one night changed everything for them. And they both must decide what their future holds.

I enjoyed the second journey into the Mystical Knights series very much. We are getting more details of the lore and lives of the Drigan pack as well as more glimpses of the evil that is gathering. Marissa’s past must be faced before she can more forward, and Neil will wait a lifetime if he must for her to come to him freely and without fear.

If you love Paranormal Romance, especially shifter series, then Dark Within is an intriguing, compelling, and charming story to sink your reading teeth into.

My Review:
Ooh, I really am liking these stories featuring the Drigan wolves. This book is Neil's story, he's the second oldest after David. He's always been the playboy in the group, but lately he's had that itch under his skin. He's unsettled and doesn't quite know why. That, and there's a scent that continues to play on his senses that smells of flowers and death. He needs to track it.

When he finds it, he discovers Marissa. Marissa has had a hard time. Her entire family died on Halloween, the holiday that used to be her favorite. So this is a really hard time of the year for her. Add in to that, strange dreams, an ex who's acting weird, and unexplainable bruises...this year is a little bit harder than most. The one bright light in all of that is Neil...even though she really doesn't understand him and his actions half the time.

This is the perfect read for this time of the year. Halloween plays heavily into the story and it's all perfectly creepy and eerie with lots of things that go bump in the night...literally. Marissa is being stalked, but since her memory keeps getting erased, she has no idea that it's going on. She already has issues with the time of the year, the Templars are NOT helping things. She's confused, but a lot of that is not her fault.

Then there's Neil...poor guy. He's doing everything he can to do the right thing...to be the good guy, and every time it seems like it's costing him the girl. Because she doesn't understand, and he can't tell her. But he's also half wolf...he's not going to give up his woman or let her be hurt.

It was a good book. I enjoyed the relationship, although Neil was my favorite. One of the Templars kept describing Marissa's soul as fractured and that was a good description of her. She's broken so it's hard for her to respond the way she should. She's trying to protect herself, even though as the reader you can see that absolutely, Neil is the best thing for her. Like I said, that just made me love Neil even more. Knowing that he will always protect her and have her back even if she won't allow a relationship...sigh...that's commitment, and seriously, how can you not fall for a guy with that kind of commitment.

I loved getting to see David and Kelsey again in this book and loved watching their mechanisms from the sidelines as they tried to get Kelsey and Neil to their happily ever after. I love how protective David is of Marissa. That familial devotion is something that she needs desperately. In fact, knowing after all she's lost, that she'll have the pack as her family now is just perfect. She needs that to heal.

I liked this one and if you're looking for something a bit spooky, but with romantic leanings for this October's reads, this is a good choice!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

SPINE-CHILLING & ROMANTIC!

DARK WITHIN - Mythical Knights-Book 1: An enthralling spine-chilling romantic adventure. Series are fantastic because you get acquainted with and adore all the amazing characters; and the characters in this series are potent, sultry, exhilarating and full of surprises..

This story features Neil; a buffed, drop dead gorgeous, intelligent wolf-shifter, David's brother and Beta to the pack; Marissa a curvaceous, independent, beauty who has devastating memories haunting her day and night.

The cast of characters are amazing, emotional, powerful, sassy, charismatic, impressive and engaging, the banter superb, scene descriptions are hair-raising and vivid, story-line spectacular, camaraderie, pent-up rage escalates, emotions spiral, life threatening incidents, gripping suspense, family moments, heart-wrenching moments, horrific monsters lurk in the shadows, heart-throbbing spine-tingling romance, and a melt your heart conclusion that leaves you content and wanting more.

When Neil meets the woman of his tormented dreams, his wolf psyche catapults him into his unwanted fate.

INCREDIBLE exhilarating well written read by a gifted author. The characters are convincing as well as praise-worthy. Marissa faces her haunting demons. Neil is a valiant hero and his unwavering devotion for Marissa shines like a dazzling star. This was a most fabulous read from start to finish and I am looking forward to the next book in this captivating series. If you relish shifter stories with suspense and romance; this is definitely a fabulous book and series for your library. In the world of shifters the possibilities are endless and always fascinating. {I received a copy of this book for a thoroughly truthful review}. Without reservations I highly recommend this book and the series.

Dark Within is Book One is the Mythical Knights Series, but a continuation about the Drigan Brothers from The Brightest Shadow (book # 0.5). Neil is the focus in this story and as a playboy he doesn’t have any interest in finding a mate and settling down. That is, until he dreams of saving a woman that smells of flowers and death. He insists on finding this woman and discovers it is Marissa – a friend of his brother’s mate.

Marissa has been plagued with sadness. Halloween used to be her favorite holiday, but then her parents were killed one Halloween and now it is a terrible time of year full of sadness. She has been having horrible nightmares and is covered in unexplainable bruises. But, Neil is the one thing that makes her smile – even though she can’t figure him out most of the time.

I absolutely love this series and the Drigan brothers. They are so strong, and sexy, and protective of those they care about. Neil tries so hard to do the right thing and be the good guy, something ingrained in his family. This trait just makes me love these guys that much more…swoon…and Neil, especially. He can’t tell Marissa what he is, but he has a duty to protect her from her attackers. What woman wouldn’t want a guy that feels that way? Marissa is too hurt and traumatized to realize how good Neil is for her, so she pushes him away.
I was excited to see David and Kelsey in this book, again. I love how protective David is of his mate’s friend. Kelsey and Marissa are as close as sisters, so the bond between all of them melts my heart. The way the pair tried to coax Neil and Kelsey together was entertaining on it’s own.

I really, really, enjoy this series and this book. I can’t wait for more of the Drigan clan from the author.

Dark Within is the first full length novel in The Mythical Knights series and is Marissa van Dyke and Neil Drigans story.

Neil is part of the Drigan wolf pack and brother to the pack Alpha, David, whose story was told in Brightest Shadow (The Mythical Knights 0.5). Neil is not looking for a mate and has no desire to commit to one woman for the rest of his life. Lately though, he has been dreaming of a beautiful woman who smells of flowers and death. Marissa is the subject of Neil's dreams. Having lost her entire family on Halloween, she is struggling as the spooky time of year comes round again. To add to this, she keeps having nightmares and waking up with bruises and her ex is also causing problems. When Neil discovers that the intriguing woman that he dreams about is both real and in mortal danger, he cannot help but step up and protect her while, at the same time, keeping secrets that could have her running in fear away from him.

Neil and Marissa worked well together as couple and I loved how protective Neil was of Marissa and how he helped her overcome her issues. The romance between the two leads was both sweet and very steamy and their story was captivating. The Mythical Knights is a great series set in an imaginative and fascinating world. I am looking forward to the next book and recommend Dark Within to lovers of well written paranormal romance.

I was given an ARC by the author for an honest review.

Marissa gets attacked my something and she is saved by a large big strange dog.
She hates Halloween and since her family died she avoids anything to do with it yet this Halloween strange things start to happen.

Neil is having strange dreams about saving a woman...and other times he makes it others not.
Then its the strange scent that is stuck in his mind that drives him insane.
When he by accident stumbles to that scent his emotions bursts.

Marissa is having a difficult time moving on but Neil makes her smile and feeling safe.

When her ex shows up Neil will have to save her again and again.

Can Marissa believe that mythicals exist?

Can Neil save her?

Can they be together?

An excellent book with an amazing story that will keep you reading till the last page!

Very well written with amazing characters and emotions that will make you tear up a little ,laugh and want to hit someone on the head!

Werewolf Neil Drigan gave his brother and Alpha a hard time when he was trying to woo his mate in Brightest Shadow (The Mythical Knights Book #0.5) by Candice Gilmer. He has no plans to settle down anytime soon. But life is what happens while you are making plans. On the night of the full moon Neil is supposed to be safely locked up in his cage with the rest of his pack but luckily for Marissa van Dyke he slipped his cage making him available to save her from a vicious vampire attack. Now Marissa is dragged into the world of vampires, werewolves, Templars and other Mythicals. Neil has to find a way to help Marissa past her own fears and has to get over his own. These two characters are great and I love the world building by the author. If you want a sweet Halloween story this book fits the bill.

OMG! I didn't think Marissa and Neil's story could be anywhere near as good as Kelsey and David's but I was sooooo wrong. With Neil saving Marissa three times, kicking Kirk's toosh for trying to hurt Marissa and with Neil so in love with Marissa you just can't imagine them not being together but wait and see what happens. Poor Marissa so confused over the lose of her family and being all alone, or is she?

I received this ARC for an honest review. I hope you enjoy this book even a fraction as much as I did.
