The ABCs of Law School: Diary of a First Year Student is the newest book by best-selling and award-winning author, Teresa Power. It takes readers on a journey into the inner workings of the first year of law school, as seen through the lens of an actual student.
Power uses the ABCs to de-mystify entering law school: A covers the law school application and admission process, B goes behind-the-scenes of the first year of law school, and C offers class outlines and other survival skills, including yoga as a stress reduction tool.
This easy to read guidebook will help not only those considering law school, those who are about to start law school, and those already in law school, but also those who are interested in knowing more about the legal process. Each chapter of the book contains a wealth of information condensed into a readable form. Law school is characterized by substantial amounts of reading, writing and researching, and The ABCs of Law School will give readers a greater awareness and clarity as to what constitutes the body of law covered during one s first year.
This book is a must read for those who wish to have a general and basic understanding of the first-year law school experience. -------------------------------------- Praise
"The ABCs of Law School is an essential read for any person thinking about going to law school, or desiring to... excel in law school once he or she gets there. Power does an outstanding job capturing the important basics of the first-year law school experience, and communicating them in a very clear and engaging way. You will be very pleased that you read this superb law school primer, and feel that you have a 'leg up' as you embark on a very challenging but rewarding adventure."-- Barry P. McDonald, Straus Research Professor of Law, Pepperdine University School of Law
"I had always assumed that applying to law school would be largely similar to the university application process, but as I begin to consider applying to law school, I cannot help but feel overwhelmed by the vast amount of mostly useless information out there. Articles online are either not relevant or too specific, and limited workshops fail to be broad enough in scope to address my needs; Teresa Power's The ABCs of Law School is the only resource I've found that provides a truly comprehensive picture of law school... To say that this book gives me a competitive advantage would be an understatement at best, and, at worst, a monumental overlooking of Teresa's sharp prose, deft organization, and years of honest experience. Whether you are merely considering law school, currently working on applications, or already in your first year, there is no better resource for prospective law students than The ABCs of Law School. If I make it through these next three years, I'll know exactly who to thank." -- Kenneth Schrupp, University of California, San Diego, Class of 2020
"Genuinely honest and insightful, Teresa Power's The ABCs of Law School is a must read for anyone navigating the murky waters of 1L. Move aside daunting treatises and classroom intimidation, the ABCs straightforward approach to breaking down the law through detailed outlines will make your 1L experience a breeze and classmates enviable!" --Taylor Magnuson, 2L at UC Berkeley School of Law

This book is helpful through a student's first year of law school. It is written so clearly and is organized so well that it is an essential reference and guidebook. There is a dedicated chapter for every first year core class, with outlines and PDF downloads of templates, and even has some stress relief yoga poses described for when students need a break. It also has strategies on how to study, and which helps prepare for a successful first year. This is definitely the most useful and beneficial book a new law student could have for law school!
I received a free copy of "The ABC's of Law School" by Teresa Power, JD through the "Good Reads First Reads Giveaway."
This book is very clear and precise, giving a wonderful outline of what's ahead for a first year law student. I'm not thinking about choosing Law as a career, but have always been curious about what is required to get to that point. The legal code mysterious numbers and letters have always intrigued me, and now I know the meaning of them.
This book is worth reading by anyone who wants to learn something new. I'm an organized person and if I was 50 years younger, I might have taken the plunge into Law School. I'll try the Yoga routine, that I can do at any age! We'll save this book for our 8 year old grandson....
This book is a must-read for anyone in law school. Teresa Power clearly breaks down how to prepare for classes, how to study for exams, how to write briefs, and how to manage stress (there is a great chapter on yoga, plus an easy to follow routine). For all of the core classes, Teresa provides succinct outlines (that are also available as downloads) that students can use to get the most out of each class and also discern how all of the foundational elements of the first year and beyond fit together. Law school is stressful but this book makes it easier.
I learned a lot about how to survive and study smarter in law school from this interesting guide by Teresa Power. I recommended it to a friend who is in their first year of law school, and he loved it and said that the bonus outlines were especially helpful.
This is a great book for anyone considering law school. I strongly recommend it before you apply but if not, you should definitely read it before your first day of class.
The author does a great job of explaining what to expect from your first year of law school. It's easy to understand and I love that she shares her personal experiences. I was pleasantly surprised by the yoga section too.
