One should start this book knowing it’s more like an interesting memoir than a how-to book.
While I enjoyed reading about David’s experience and found value in it, this book wasn’t quite what I expected.
There was some good advice to be gleaned (what worked best for David in terms of finding supplies, having a niche, being successful in a farmers market setting); Although I was hoping for something more step by step as far as starting a home based nursery. Some of the information I found to be too general (just hire an accountant, find more information about greenhouses elsewhere) or not focused (information about soil mixtures and fertilizer - anyone who is interested in/ confident enough to consider selling plants knows these things already).
I was most of all hoping to learn more about how to care for plants from seed/cutting until they are ready to sell. Unfortunately I did not find that information here.
I am just on the cusp of beginning my own backyard nursery adventure, but I was filled with doubts! Reading Mr. the Good’s book has helped me think through several of those grey areas, providing much needed clarity. My niche is native plants for pollinator conservation, and I’ll probably add medicinal plants as well since so many native wildflowers are also medicinal. I’m thankful this book was a Kindle Unlimited book so I can save money here in order to spend more on plants.
I didn’t know what to expect when I found this book. I haven’t really learned much from other little books like this, but this one was different.
This book It brings back memories of a book I read many years ago about the growing a business ideas by the man who built Smith & Hawkins, the gardening tool seller.
Anyway, you won’t become rich and famous (well maybe YOU will) by reading this book but it has a positively infectious attitude about becoming successful if you do something you love.
I enjoyed this little book and learned a few things along the way.
While David The Good did a nice job of explaining the ins and outs of how he created his own nursery, I didn’t get much out of it. I was hoping to learn a little more about how to begin a home nursery, but instead it felt like I was reading an autobiography. There were also some parts after the halfway point, where it felt like he was being overly judgmental of people who are different from him, and that felt icky. 3.5/5
Simple and well written like a conversation no step by step advice
Though the title implies he will actually trek you how to start a plant nursery, there is little actionable advice included. In summary he says, grow plants you like, sell them at farmers markets or from home, pay your taxes and advertise. A short common sense broad brush advice column in book format.
David the Good is quickly becoming one of my favorite sources of quality plant information. Between his books and his YouTube channel there's just a ridiculous amount of outstanding content.
