Jean Genet was a French novelist, playwright, poet, essayist, and political activist. In his early life he was a vagabond and petty criminal, but he later became a writer and playwright. His work, much of it considered scandalous when it first appeared, is now placed among the classics of modern literature and has been translated and performed throughout the world.

Hanuman Books are the best! This one is one of my favorties. Genet's take on Rambrandt and art in general. His little critical writing is sooooo good. I wished he was still alive and writing like crazy.

A very rare book but worth the search: Genet's unique insights create a tapestry woven loosely to read between the lines and let the imagination flow. Genet's writing as always is unlike any other writer.

Unfortunately I was unable to find the original in French which I'd rather have read, but the translation was pretty good. I have to be honest, I only partly got what the Genet was trying to say - I think this essay had multiple layers, but I didn't get them all. I will need to read it again. Nonetheless, I really like his scatteredness, his way of jumping around, of tearing apart an idea from different perspectives and in different ways, and overall it was an interesting essay and very well-written.
