This is a super thick guidebook but it’s incredibly organized and humorous! I don’t plan on doing these tours but the book gave me a good understanding of the city and a lot of history. I also love the writers funny honesty when they’ll bluntly state what’s worth seeing or not! Is four stars being generous when this took me a long time to read? Maybe.

July 29, 2011This book is all about the complex history of Rome, and walks that you can take to understand better that history--what to look for, why, and how to appreciate the city. It is written by journalists who clearly have a love of imparting information (and are not exercising journalistic editing, because the book is 700 pages), and you would never want to cart the whole thing around with you...nor can you memorize it, but for the truly diligent historical preparation, this is your book for the ancient city.
