Horace Leonard Gold was a science fiction writer and editor most noted for bringing an innovative and fresh approach to science fiction while he was the editor of Galaxy Science Fiction, and also wrote briefly for DC Comics. Born in Canada, Gold moved to the United States at the age of two. He also published under the pseudonyms Clyde Crane Campbell, Dudley Dell, Christopher Grimm, and Leigh Keith.
If I was reviewing this in 1952 I would have to give it 5 stars. These stories still hold up very well today. It's interesting that H. L. Gold, in collecting these stories in 1951, had a great eye for who were the best authors of the time and for quite some time after. We know today how good Sturgeon, Fredric, Brown, Fritz Leiber, Bradbury, William Tenn, Asimov, Poul Anderson, Damon Knight, Clifford Simak and Leinster were to SF in the 50's and 60's and often later but Gold recognized it then. These stories were pretty much the cream of the crop at the end of 1951. Gold had created a SF magazine in Galaxy that moved away from the pulp SF style of the 40's and towards a more literary type of story that included more sociology, psychology and satire and less BEM's, space heroes, frenetic action and pseudoscientific gadgets.
