Content Analysis: An Introduction to Its Methodology

Rate this book
What matters in people’s social lives? What motivates and inspires our society? How do we enact what we know?

Since the first edition published in 1980, Content Analysis has helped shape and define the field. In the highly anticipated Fourth Edition, award-winning scholar and author Klaus Krippendorff introduces readers to the most current method of analyzing the textual fabric of contemporary society. Students and scholars will learn to treat data not as physical events but as communications that are created and disseminated to be seen, read, interpreted, enacted, and reflected upon according to the meanings they have for their recipients. Interpreting communications as texts in the contexts of their social uses distinguishes content analysis from other empirical methods of inquiry.

Organized into three parts, Content Analysis first examines the conceptual aspects of content analysis, then discusses components such as unitizing and sampling, and concludes by showing readers how to trace the analytical paths and apply evaluative techniques. The Fourth Edition has been completely revised to offer readers the most current techniques and research on content analysis, including new information on reliability and social media. Readers will also gain practical advice and experience for teaching academic and commercial researchers how to conduct content analysis.

Krippendorff shows a wide roundup about of content analysis. It´s a great book to know the concepts. But, the examples make lack. For me is a perfect book to go deep about theory, for example, Krippendorff's alpha coefficient is an interesting metric and, the exercises of this unity describe well this topic. In my opinion, the diversity of topics would allow creating several books with concepts and examples. When I finished the book, my first question was: How make a content analysis whit this information? I know the practice makes the master, but the examples are necessary.

A well organized and argued book! This makes clear the goals of content analysis and how it can be used, how it has been used, who uses it, and for what goals. Although there are very many editions of this, the earlier ones seem to explain more of a history of the reason for development and its connection to other types of method such as semiotics. More recent books on the subject like to draw a line between these areas and call the use of them together as mixed methods simply because they combine both quantitative and qualitative methods, however Krippendorff has the foresight to deny this as a reasonable boundary for communications literature.

unnecessary explanation... boring... if you know about content analysis and looking for something deeper... don't waste your time... you have better options...
and nothing much about qualitative methods in content analysis... just talking about the philosophy of this method...

A great intro to content analysis and its origin. I read the first hundred pages in a heartbeat, but afterwords it started to drag a bit. A definite recommendation to beginners into the method, or to someone who wishes to brush up on it!

An authoritative and comprehensive text, although at times quite a slog to get through. From a researcher's perspective it is rather inflexible and behind the times, but it can't be ignored.
