Kerry Wilkinson has become one of my go to authors for well done mysteries. This is the third in the Andrew Hunter series, involving a PI and his quirky assistant. While the books are titled for Andrew, I find Jenny to be the true star of the series.

The humor in this series isn’t as broad as in the Jessica Daniels one, but it's still there. Here, it just tends to be a little drier, but that’s Andrew’s personality as well.

As with each of the prior books, Andrew is engaged by a family member to find out the truth about the death of a loved one. Here, a woman with a high alcohol content drowns in the Manchester canal. Her mother is convinced her football superstar boyfriend is to blame. But the police say his alibi is solid.

The ending was a bit unbelievable but it didn’t bother me. The biggest mystery of all has to do with Jenny’s background.

My thanks to netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of this book.

I received a free e-copy of Something Buried (Andrew Hunter Book 3) by Kerry Wilkinson from NetGalley for my honest review.

Another amazing mystery by Kerry Wilkinson. Brilliantly written page turner that was hard to put down and kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. A fantastic and exciting read with wonderful characters.

Not quite sure why but the ‘Andrew Hunter’ series are my favourite Kerry Wilkinson reads. This is the third book I have read in this series and I hope the author has plans to write more. The two main characters Andrew Hunter and his underling Jenny remind me very much of JK Rowling’s Cormoran Strike and Robin Ellacott which I also enjoy.

In this third book Andrew is asked by Anna Applegate to investigate the drowning of her daughter Michelle. Michelle drowned after a night out with a friend and Anna is convinced Michelle’s death was deliberate, and that her boyfriend, sports star Jack Marsh, killed her. Early investigations by Andrew uncover that Jack has a history of violence and a flimsy alibi for the night Michelle drowned. As a side issue a former case is coming back to haunt Andrew which threatens to put loved ones in serious danger.

This series has strong characters and well written plots that help make these books well worth reading.

Anna Applegate's daughter drowned. Anna is certain that Michelle's death was a deliberate act, not an accident like the cops suspect. Michelle had been out with Jack Marsh, a super sports star the night she died. Ask Anna ... she believes that Jack is the one that killed her.

PI Andrew Hunter is asked to investigate. What he discovers is that Jack has a history of violence and no real alibi for the night Michelle died.

Andrew is up to his ears in alligators. While worrying about finding the truth about Anna's daughter's death, a former case has come front and center to haunt him.... and the people he love.

Once again, this author has put together a story that it well written, full of suspense and mystery. The plot is fast paced, filled with finely drawn characters.

Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Something Buried, the third novel to feature Manchester based PI Andrew Hunter.

Andrew is approached by Anna Applegate about the death of her daughter, Michelle who was found in the canal, dead from alcohol poisoning. The police ruled it an accident but Anna is sure that Michelle’s boyfriend, football Jack Marsh is responsible and wants Andrew to prove it. Meantime Andrew has problems of his own with threats of violence to his friends and family if he doesn’t do as he’s told.

I thoroughly enjoyed Something Wicked which has an interesting, eventful plot that held my attention throughout. I was hooked from the start with the opening descriptions of Andrew’s experience in a nightclub which had me laughing and suffering along with him. For a relatively young man in this thirties he has a middle aged sensibility. The novel proceeds apace from there with a series of revelations and action pieces. There are times when it seems a little pat - Andrew asks a question and gets the information he requires with little difficulty - but that’s a minor quibble as the author is looking to entertain, not provide grit. In this aim he succeeds admirably.

While I read the first novel in the series I missed the second and that niggles as one of the characters from it makes a return appearance. There are explanations for it but I feel that I was missing the detail when I read this one. It might not bother other readers as the novel does mostly stand alone and work well, I just like comprehensive knowledge.

I really like Andrew Hunter and his quirky assistant, Jenny who are fast becoming favourite characters. He is the slightly staid adult with a mature attitude and a desire to get to the bottom of his cases. She is strange with no fear, a sugar addiction and what might be big secrets in her past. I wondered at first if she was on the spectrum but there seems to be more to her behaviour than that. I’m looking forward to more revelations in the next book.

Something Buried is a good read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

You know the feeling when you can get your hands on a book that is being published, written by one of your favourite authors? Well, actually that is a feeling I seem to have a lot lately. And I just love it. LOL

It’s like Christmas, Easter and every other holiday are all on the same day almost every single day of the week. Lucky me!

Yesterday I was one happy camper because I had the pleasure to devour the third part in this excellent series.

Andrew Hunter is a character I like very much and then there is wonderful, mysterious, fun Jenny. Every time I hope the author will tell us more about her … Yes, he feeds us a little snippet here and there, but there is still so much to uncover. I love and hate it at the same time. I truely am dying of curiosity. And of course auntie Gem. The author could not have chosen a better name for her, because she sure is a gem.

This author hit pay dirt and struck gold once again. The story was interesting and intriguing, sprinkled with a bit of humour 5 stars.

Thank you, Kerry Wilkinson, Bookouture and Netgalley.

Andrew Hunter is a PI who takes on unusual cases -- not because he has to in order to eat, but because he finds them interesting. He's a rare breed -- an honest guy, very ordinary with a bit of humorous bent. He and his office assistant employee, Jenny, take on a couple of investigations in this third book of the series.

Nearly a year ago, a young woman who had way too much to drink is fished from the canal. Despite police doing their thing, the death is ruled accidental. The woman's mother doesn't believe it was an accident and thinks that a local footballer is responsible because he was the boyfriend. And there are rumors that he isn't a very nice guy. Hunter decides to look into the matter and starts talking to some people connected to the incident. It seems there is a pretty big price to pay for fame and adulation in that world and Hunter has a hard time getting it all pieced together. He's also still in a debt owed position with a former nemesis and finds himself looking for a particular violin. It's all business as usual -- but wait, now Hunter's ex-wife has appeared on the scene...

This novel fell a bit flat for me. The case wasn't very exciting and some of the stuff that Hunter did just seemed kind of stupid to me. Yeah he's rich and doesn't need to work, but the way he responds in situations doesn't really ring true. I'm having a hard time dealing with his personality and approach to running his investigative firm and I'm finding it hard to warm to him. And the whole Jenny thing just drove me wild with all these dangling hints and insinuations and then NO ANSWERS. Really? Believe me, it's not a hook for the next book as it was just totally annoying. Now I honestly don't even care. I felt the whole conclusion was pretty lame and anticlimactic so this one was a bit of a disappointment after all my anticipation. I may or may not be interested in the next one of this series after all.

I'd recommend that you read this series from the beginning in order because otherwise you might be a bit lost. Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for this e-book ARC to read and review.

So judging from the reviews, I'm one of the few who didn't love this one.

This is not a statement against the author - I enjoy his books and will happily read him in the future.

This one just didn't do it for me.

The mysteries were odd. I never, ever bought into them and certainly didn't buy into a particular villain. The issues with another character were just weird and the reasons behind all the 'warnings' never really panned out into much.

I just kept thinking this one was clunky.

I did finish it and it kept my interest long enough that I was willing to ride it out to see what happened, but I really didn't enjoy most of it.

Something Buried is an atmospheric, tense exploration of motherly intuition and dogged determination to uncover the truth.

The story follows Andrew and Jenny (P.I.’s) who work to discover the truth about the death of Michelle after her mother pays a visit to their office. Her daughter’s body is found in a canal and the police think she simply fell in, a victim of her own inebriation. She, however, suspects her daughter’s famous soccer playing on-and-off-again boyfriend.

There is a fair mix of unsavory characters that keep the story moving and the plot a bit twisty: the organized crime boss and his thug; the soccer player and his mom; the soccer fans; and a few thieves.

Falling a bit short for me, however, is the Jenny sub-plot which was left unresolved and the crime boss interaction that seemed less dire as was intended. The final reveal of The Who-Done-It was twisty but only in that curveball way that introduces the culprit(s) out of the ether as opposed to developing them organically from within the main.

Overall entertaining but a tad flat-footed in parts.

Thank you to NetGalley for arc in exchange for honest review.

Michelle Applegate was found drowned in a canal. While the police investigated, no leads were found and the case went cold. Her mother, Anna Applegate hired private detective Andrew Hunter and his sidekick Jenny to look into the case. She is sure that football star Jack Marsh had something to do with the death. The police looked at him, of course, but he had a solid alibi and was playing cards with his teammates in a hotel and never left the building.

Jenny is a somewhat mysterious young woman who has a craving/love for sweets and is fiercely loyal to Andrew. Together they investigate the apparent murder of Michelle. Meanwhile, an old nemesis of Andrew's come out to play. Braithwaite, a local crime boss, wants Andrew to do some “favors” for him, like locate a stolen violin. Andrew knows Braithwaite's trouble, but can't see any way out of helping him for Braithwaite is also violent and doesn't take “no” for an answer.

Michelle was a party girl. She had a dream of marrying a “big star” and visited the local clubs in hopes of meeting one. She drank too much. In fact the coroner put down her death as “alcohol poisoning.”

As Andrew and Jenny investigate Michelle's death (and the stolen violin case), they learn some really interesting facts about both Michelle and Jack. This leads them through layers of clues and they talk to many people, some fairly nice and some not so nice.

Then Jenny disappears.

The killer's identity came as surprise to me. The motive was pure television drama. I shook my head at the stupid-ness of it all.

I liked Andrew and Jenny much better than Mr. Wilkinson's Jessica Daniel series. They are much better characters and more believable than Detective Daniels. I like the way Andrew and Jenny get along and I like Jenny's sense of mysteriousness about her. This is a well written and plotted book and although it is my first Andrew and Jenny story, it won't be my last. I truly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the next in the series and catching up with the two books I missed.

I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this great book for me to read, enjoy and review.

Another great read from Kerry Wilkinson.
I’ve had this one on my tbr pile for some time and really enjoyed it.
Andrew Hunter is a private investigator and along with Jenny, he normally gets tangled up in something he shouldn’t. This book is no different!
Hunter is asked to look into the death of a young woman who was thought to have fallen into the canal whilst drunk, but her mum thinks there was more to it.
It also involves a footballer who has an eye for the girls, but was he involved in her death?
As well as this story, Hunter has also become embroiled with Braithwaite and will do anything to get out of his grasp.
This is a great crime thriller that had me hooked throughout the book.

Andrew Hunter is back! Absolutely love this series.
Something Buried is the third instalment in the Andrew Hunter series.
In this outing Andrew and Jenny’s are looking into a death of a young lady that died under circumstances that might not be as cut and dry as the police found. Andrew and Jenny do have a knack for finding trouble. I could not put this book down.

I have been waiting for nearly three years for this third book in the Andrew Hunter series and although the author has given me plenty of stand alones and Jessica Daniel books in the mean time, as soon as I heard there was a new "Andrew", I've been chomping at the bit to get my mitts on it.
So... the long awaited book - the verdict... Blooming brilliant! Having pined for Andrew for so long, I tried to slow down and savour it but I'm afraid I failed. Once I got started there was no prising this book from my hands until I had devoured every single word. I even forgive the author for the horrid series arc he left unresolved at the end of the book - unless that is I have to wait another three years to find out!
Ok so in this book PI Andrew Hunter is visited by Anna Applegate, a bereaved mother, whose daughter Michelle died during a night out. The death - by drowning, exacerbated by alcohol consumption - having been ruled an accident. But Anna is convinced it was foul play and that her footballer (see what I did there?) boyfriend, Jack, had something to do with it. Andrew agrees to look into the case before committing to it but he soon uncovers dark secrets in Jack's past and potential holes in his alibi.
Meanwhile. Andrew is also visited by a face from the past which stirs up memories and emotions. Oh, and there's that favour he owes someone you really don't want to be owing favours to. And, if that's not enough balls for the author to successfully juggle, these's something Andrew's assistant Jenny is hiding.
So, why do I love this series so much. Well, even after nearly three years without Andrew I was able to slip back into his word easily and comfortable pretty much from the first page. It was like we'd never been apart! Oh, the small cameo in a Jessica book did ease my pain along the way and probably helped the re-connection process a tad.
The rest of the reasons why I loved this book are the usual things that I know and love about all this author's books. His setting of Manchester, again like a character in its own right, so important it is to the story. The no nonsense way he tells the story with pretty much no superfluous padding. The matter of fact speech and banter which enhance his character interaction is, as always, sublime. Not forgetting all the humour he injects into the narrative.
But all these things wouldn't matter if the story was weak. Which, I hasten to add, it wasn't. Plotting was tight and well executed and the main story kept me fooled right until the end. As I learned more and more about the characters, the confusion evaporated, the bigger picture started to emerge, and it all came together perfectly at the end. I especially liked the "side jobs" Andrew did along the way, especially the violin one!
All in all, it was worth the extended wait to read this book. Hopefully the next Andrew will not be as long in coming.

The now familiar streets of Manchester come to life as Andrew investigates his current case. Not an easy one as the death of Michelle has already been declared an accident- the case is closed. However, her mother believes otherwise and wants Andrew to find evidence that she was killed by her boyfriend.
It was good to catch up with Jenny and Andrew’s Aunt Gem and I was soon completely caught up the narrative. The ever emerging personalities of the character continue to intrigue in different ways and I felt a connection with them, though some only evoked a feeling of repugnance. The story moved smoothly through events with just enough tension to keep me on the edge of my seat and I enjoyed seeing the rather staid Andrew being forced out of his comfort zone with Jenny still remaining something of an enigma.

My initial reaction on finishing the book was disappointment after I turned the last page expecting the story to continue. I rechecked because I could not envisage it stopping there only to realise that I had been so engrossed that I had read more than forty chapters. The ending is not a cliff-hanger as has appeared in some of Kerry Wilkinson’s books, rather a feeling that it should have continued and was something of an anti-climax. This did not stop me giving it a great rating and definitely me made eager for the fourth book in the series and hope that it will not be too long in coming.

I love the Andrew Hunter Series. I enjoyed this book, but Something Hidden (second book) is still my favorite. Love that we got more of a glimpse into the real Jenny. I can't wait to find out her secrets. I know she is hiding something, not to mention she's also a little bit scary. Love Aunt Gem and the always portly Rory. I can't imagine what would have happened to her if Andrew wasn't staying with her that night. I didn't enjoy the Luke Marsh case as much as the previous cases. I still don't really understand the motives behind the murder of Michelle. It was so strange and would never have guessed who would be involved. I guess people do crazy stuff all the time for no real reason. I did enjoy all the investigative work that Andrew and Jenny put into the case. I'm still rooting for Keira. How Andrew manages to find Jenny was pure genius. The girl is scary intelligent (emphasis on scary.) But I do love her. Although, this book she seemed a little different than she did in the previous two. I don't think this is the last we will see of Thomas Braitwaite.

Definitely recommend the book and the previous two in the series. Can't wait to read the next book in the series!! Hopefully all will be revealed about Jenny's past.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bookouture through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

It was delighted to see another book in the Andrew Hunter series, having thoroughly enjoyed the previous two in the series and it was not disappointed.

Michelle Applegate's mother refuse to believe that her daughter's drowning was an accident. She is sure that her boyfriend, Jack Marsh the footballer was to blame. She is sure Michelle would ot have just fallen in the river because she was drunk. Andrew & Jenny take the case on, although they are not convinced the mother is right.

Andrew is a somewhat flawed character that always struggles to do the right thing but often ends up getting beaten up for his pains! There are times when you want to shout, "What do you think you're up to?" Jenny is also fascinating character. As each book comes along, more is revealed about her. I can't wait for the next one.

Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.

I loved it and was hooked from the second page. This book has great strong characters and is full of twists and turns throughout that will have you gripped!

Kerry, You have done it again! An addictive page turner.

I highly recommend this latest book and then again all of his books. Kerry is just an excellent author!

I liked Andrew and Jenny. This is the first one in the series that I have read but number three overall. It can be read as a stand alone.

There is a lot happening in this story! Many twists and red herrings will keep you moving along. Michelle’s drowning is not the only mystery at play. There is also an organized crime boss (I hate these type characters so that detracted points for me - sorry, personal bias) and a missing violin. Yep, there’s that.

There are plenty of characters to point a finger at, some of them quite nasty. The conclusion, one I didn’t see coming, was a bit crazy. Overall, entertaining. I would check out the next one.

#SomethingBuried is the third book in the Andrew Hunter series and while it can be read as a stand alone, the character development would play out better as part of the series. The reader is taken on an investigative ride as PI, Andrew Hunter and his partner, Jenny investigate the suspected murder of a young woman. While the reader is introduced to a whole new cast of characters, @KerryWilkinson brings along some old favorites as well. The narrative is complex and appeals to the genre with a fast paced plot full of suspense and mystery. Great read. 5 stars.

It’s been a long time but Andrew Hunter is back. We’ve not seen him, save for a few pop ups in The Jessica Daniel’s series, since 2016, but here he and Jenny are again. I really enjoyed this. The interaction between two of them feels more real this time and the humour that characterises Kerry Wilkinson’s writing is there too bringing the odd wry smile. As the main and subplots collide it’s a real page turner - I read this in one sitting. Nice twist to the main plot, I definitely didn’t see that coming and lots of intrigue left to come in the sub plot too. Please though not another 3 year wait for number 4

This is the 3rd book in the series. I recommend you read them in order. The "cases" are not connected but Andrew and Jenny's relationship evolves with each book. A young woman is found drowned in a canal and the cause of death is alcohol poisoning as she was drunk. Her mother is convinced the daughter's boyfriend murdered her. An old nemesis of Andrew also demands Andrew's help in finding a stolen violin. I really enjoy this series. The characters are great. I look forward to reading Book 4. I really like the main characters in this series - Andrew Hunter and his assistant's relationship is truly evolving, and is keeping me intrigued. I very much look forward to learning how this relationship continues to develop and find out the secrets his assistant is keeping. Another hugely entertaining read that was sad and funny in equal measure. Kerry never disappoints with his easy writing style and hilarious humour.

Yet again an excellent read. There is something about the way the characters are written that just draws me in. At the end of the day I guess it's another crime novel but it's the talent of the writer that engages the reader. A satisfying read and pure escapism. Plus I'm invested into these characters. Warts n all, so, for me, it's a real page turner.

I’d forgotten what the Andrew Hunter books were about, having read them a while ago, albeit that he does appear in the Jessica Daniels books from time to time. That being so, I set to and re-read them, and I’m so glad I did. Kerry has the unique flair for dark humour, I would say it’s the northern humour and even when the characters are in the depths of despair, there’s a funny side to it. I found myself laughing and chuckling out loud.

The story itself is a good one with lots to entertain the reader, a mysterious drowning, Rich footballers, and a person whom Andrew would rather not have anything to do with, who threatens everyone that Andrew cares about.

I do hope Kerry brings these characters back again in another book. I enjoy the trips around Manchester too, as it is my home town, albeit it’s changed over the years.

My thanks to Kerry personally for sender not me the ARC. They are always welcome.

Andrew Hunter is back !! Huge thank you to the author for an advance copy of the book.

When I imagine Andrew Hunter, I think of a quirky, intelligent northerner - a little bit of self doubt in everything he says or does, but very passionate about his job. The third book in the series - and a very good read. Andrew's assistant Jenny continues to be an enigma, a little more is revealed about her and her back story - and I'm sure there's more to come. All is never as it seems - and Andrew has to unpack a tragic death of a young woman.

Good to have him back and looking forward to the next in the series.
