David Henry Montgomery was an American author of several history textbooks. His "Leading Facts" series, including The Leading Facts of American History, were widely used in schools from the 1890s through the 1920s.
Montgomery attended Brown University, graduating in 1861. He joined Theta Delta Chi during his time at Brown.
This book covers the period in United States history from Christopher Columbus to Captain John Sutter. The chapters are relatively short, and presents the information in a concise and understandable manner. It does not try to be more interesting than it is, and it does not try to sway the reader to take sides in the events. It simply states what happened, whether good or bad. It was not a book I was excited to read, but I do appreciate its usefulness in recounting American History.
We are using this book as one of our spines for an American History study that spans two years, so we have read excerpts from it, but not all of it. I do not enjoy the titles of the sections so I skip those, but the content is good and the discussion questions can be useful if needed.
