Joey couldn’t imagine a better thirteenth birthday. He’d been given his first pistol and now was going to join his six older brothers on tomorrow’s job. They were going to trust him with covering their escape after robbing the bank and he was determined to do it right. He was immensely proud to be a Hogan, and his tough brothers were his heroes. Joey knew there was nothing he wanted out of life more than to be just like them. It would take him years before he wanted nothing more than to kill each of them.

Most biographies start with birth and then roll through the years as they drift by but that would bore me to death, and I lived through it.

The interesting part of my life began on September 23rd, 1995 as we were driving back to Omaha after watching the Notre Dame - Texas game in South Bend with relatives. The #21 Irish beat the #13 ranked Longhorns 55-27; and in a real oddity, scored points in just about every way conceivable in the game of football. They scored touchdowns on passes and runs, kicked a field goal, intercepted a pass for a TD, returned a punt for a touchdown and even added two points for blocking a Texas extra point.

As we were driving along westbound I-80 somewhere in Illinois in our Jeep Cherokee, I absent-mindedly rubbed the left side of my neck under my chin.

My very astute wife asked, "What's wrong with your neck?"

Now I had been an Air Force medic for twelve years; and as evident in my descriptions of outlaws' agonizing deaths in my stories, have a good working knowledge of anatomy and physiology. But that knowledge is offset by being a guy and thinking that we all live forever. My neck lymph nodes had been enlarged for around three months when my wife asked that question.

I obfuscated as if I was a lawyer and replied, "Um, a few weeks or so." (Note: Twelve or thirteen weeks does qualify as a 'few' weeks if one chooses to be generous.)

"And what did the doctor say?"

"I'll ask him when we get back."

"Yes, you will."

I do not want to make my wife out to be a harpy or a nag, because she is neither. She's an incredibly patient woman who could only put up with so much stupidity by yours truly.

Three days later, after the doctor copped a quick feel of my lymph nodes, he said, "I don't know what it is, but I don't like it," which was an honest, albeit an imprecise diagnosis.

So, we trotted over to a local ENT specialist. She didn't like them either and took me into surgery a few days later where she yanked one out, so the lab could dice it and slice it, then look at it under a microscope.

The pathologist who looked at the cells through his microscope reported his findings as 'lymphoepithelioma'. That meant that it was a secondary tumor and there was a primary tumor somewhere else in my nasopharynx that was the original problem.

Back I went into the operating room where the ENT doctor did an extensive examination and found nothing. She was so sure of her reconnaissance of the back of my throat that she told me that the pathologist was wrong, and it was just a lymphoma.

Now, being a computer geek, even way back in the dark ages of the internet in '95, I did some searching and found that if the primary tumor wasn't found, then the survival rate plummeted to about a fifth of the already lousy survival rate for the advanced Stage IV cancer. My wife and I decided that a second opinion might be a good idea.

Off we went in her Jeep to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota as the lousy weather descended across the Midwest. It's been known to happen, you know.

They had a problem getting the doctor here to release the specimen she'd yanked out of my neck, which I thought was odd because I don't remember selling it and figured I still owned it. Anyway, they eventually got the lymph node, did their own peek and confirmed the pathologist's diagnosis.

It wasn't until Halloween in 1995 that they finally found the original little bugger. It was just a tiny bump in the back of my throat that must have been there for a long time before it sent its friends marching into my lymph nodes.

They wanted to treat the cancer there, but I opted to have it done in Omaha and was sent to the care of Doctor Patrick J. McKenna (a name you may recognize from Max). Doctor Mac was the perfect man for the job as he was very personable, optimistic, had a good sense of humor and wouldn't put up with my constant whining. It helped that he knew his job, too.

Well, I stuck it out until the end. However, while I was waiting for a conclusion that would give me some "shock and awe", instead I just ended up feeling "awwwww".

Quite frankly, I'm surprised that so many readers have given this book a five-star rating. I found it to be somewhat in the vein of a Harlequin romance novel. While I credit the author for building up the main characters to give readers feelings of investment in their backgrounds and lives, the book was simply too touchy (literally toward the end of the book) feely for my taste.

This is my first book from this author. At some point, I'll likely try another (after all, he's quite prolific). Until then, I'll mosey on over to true Western authors like Brand and L'Amour.

Good western and editing

What under educated person edited this story? I think the misspelling and grammatical errors in the later chapters are most distracting! Maybe next time you could get someone who has English as a first language?

"A Great Western Story"

This is the 50th book written in two years by this inspired author. It's this book I've first read, and I'm awed about how great the story was to enjoy. Young Joey can't imagine a better birthday at age 13. He's received his first pistol and is going to join his six older brothers on their next 'job.' They'll be robbing a bank and he'll be covering their escape. The brothers were tough, and Joey's heroes. Joey's life will significantly change quickly. This is truly a great western novel which also has romance. It's an amazing story which totally captivated me.

When I'm old enough !

This is a very good read..
Joe has suffered at the hands of other people ,from a very young age , he survived.
There is action, some romance and, you better know it , Retribution !

I loved it.

This book was like Good n Penty candy...way to sugary, but the bowl winds up empty. If you are a fan of Halmark TV movies or the Lifetime channel, you may find this your cup of tea. Over the top violent acts and degradation of women meet satisfying .44 caliber justice. The romance teeters on the edge as Cassie, afeared of birthin babies, pushes Joe away despite her love. The dance scene at the girl's finishing school would get the author strung up by the #MeToo folks. A sexual advance by a near-stranger awakens Cassies sense of lust even as she fights to resist.... Puh-leese.
The author boasts of writing 50 books in two years..... it shows.

TITLE, LOVE, LAW, GROWING UP

5 STARS for this excellent story at a pause of CJP's writing because this was the 50th book! It is an Old West Era Drama about a boy named Joey as he lives & grows into adulthood. Joe's life is action packed from the so called outlaw brothers he supposedly has to meeting Sheriff John on his way to the Texas Reformatory School for Boys for bank robbing, even though he wasn't even there. He excelled with 1 warden & was treated harshly by the 2nd even though he was a model student & boy reformed. The characters there are varied & make you sad, happy, & angry. A really good thing that makes an exciting interesting read.
Before he went to Reform School Cassie, the Sheriff's 10 yr old daughter to his 13 yr old announced he would come back at 18 & be her boyfriend; So he had better learn to read & write in order to write her some letters & then read her's to him; Afterwards, she left him stunned without words in the jail. Their courtship is rocky with lots of love yet doubt as to them ever getting married. Furthermore, Joe had to hunt down the 5 brothers that were left that had kidnapped him, his mother & aunt when he was about 3. The horrible abuse they inflicted on his mother & aunt needed to be evened out, then as he looks for them as a Deputy Sheriff he has shoot em up gun fights with the low lifes that don't respect others, or their belongings. Action, Emotions - Fear, Sadness, Happiness, Lust, Eating Cake, Birth- All around Excitement ! Guns!
50th Novel great place to take a break & 1 hell of a boy who learns he is somebody besides who he thought, He has to grow up & get strong in order to come back to punish those who had hurt his Mother & Aunt plus lied to him; Then put him in the position to be killed, hung, or go to the Reformatory. ( Which he was!) He would learn what he needed & he would return for Retribution.

IT ALL COMES TOGETHER

This is another great adventurer into the lives of the people living in the West. Lots of sadness, loneliness and most times they meet death from malnutrition, diseases, shootings and abuse. This particular adventure involves kidnapping, human trafficking, sexual abuses. A young man named Joe idolized his brothers the Hogans. They were nothing but a gang nere-do-wells predators, who eventually set Joe up to be apprehended by the posse chasing his brothers who had just robbed a bank. Joe was sent to reform school located in Gainesville, Texas. He spent four horrific years of mental and physical abuse, but he used that time to learn to read and write...He also trained as an apprentice blacksmith which helped him physically and mentally..you know he made things for the reform, kept his body and mind concentrated..so he replace hardships he faced everyday in the reform school.
Just read this adventure like all of C.J. Petit quick reading and enjoyable adventures about the struggles humans face everyday, some make it and some don't..one of the sentences "life is what it is, nothing more or less." These are nice western love stories, they aren't gooey and over the moon types of relationships, but men and women who meet under strange, and sometimes weird circumstances, but in the end the plot brings them together...love love don't come easy you all..ENJOY ENJOY ALL

This story is a very believable, and exciting, representation of our great American folklore, which touches the heart in so many different ways. I have long been a follower of Mr. C. J. Petit, but this book, to me, is certainly one of his very best renditions of western adventures.

Five stars and more for this outstanding masterpiece by the master of western storytelling. The storylines are definitely representative of the era and I was hooked immediately with the author's ability to bring each and every episode into perspective, effectively maintaining the reader's undivided attention. Too, the characters were perfectly selected throughout the entire book.
This story is definitely a "tear jerker" at times, but is very family-friendly from beginning to end. A very heartwarming story of what I believe our real old west must have been. The author apparently did his research in earnest, as everything definitely falls into perspective from beginning to end.
I, without hesitation, recommend this compassionate story to all readers, regardless of what your utmost interest in material is. This touching masterpiece reaches out to everyone, and will most definitely touch your heart and soul from beginning to end!

Retribution

This is one of the best books that. CJP has written, however I say that about most of his books. Not only does he address the time that it is about but also about the awful conditions that were accepted necessitIes. For example, the Reformatory School that Joe as a barely thirteen year old boy was sent to until he reached the age of 18. Joe met the sheriff when he was arrested and with that brief contact, he met the first real man that he could look up to as a role model and life lessons that kept him alive in the respiratory school. The sheriff's daughter , Cassie also made an impression on Joe that stayed with him on his journey to leave that place as a whole man. A good man. A man with a mission for his life. I could not put this book down, like all of CJP books there is more a true story that touches me one so many levels and I look for every new book that CJP puts out. Every one is a look at the times and the hardships that our ancestors lived through in order for our generation to be born. Please keep doing what you are doing, CJP, there is just so much more that we don't know.

I am always amazed at the details J C Petit weaves into each book. Joey was raised by a outlaw brothers who rape and kill across the west. He is sent to a reform school where he is abused physically and mentally for four years. Despite his abuse he remains a person of integrity as he faces the relentless abuse from the warden. He works in the blacksmith shop and leaves the reform school with a trade and a drive to wreck retribution on the warden. Befriended by a local sheriff they set out to use the laws of Texas to punish the warden.
Joey becomes a Deputy Sheriff and sets out to kill the brothers who had raised him after they had killed his mother. He successfully, tracks down most of the brothers as they continued to kill and rape families throughout the west. There is romance as he loves the sheriff's daughter who was emotionally conflicted while they danced around their love for one another. Joey, finally finds the last brother who was acting as a marshal and terrorized the citizens. The former warden attempted to escape prosecution but was killed by the sheriff.
It was an interesting western story written with detail that I have come to expect from Mr. Petit. He is an exceptionally gifted story teller.

Great story!

As a first time reader of this author's work I can assure you that I will be reading more of his work. This is a strong, well-crafted story. The characters were well-drawn and believable. The plot well-crafted; the tone and style of this fine author's writing made his book a very enjoyable read. The one thing I think it could use was a good edit. There were several places where a word or two were left out or misplaced, and I had to read it again to make sense of it. This was a minor inconvenience to me in consideration of the strength of the story, but a better edit would have made this a five star review. This is a fine western story and one that I'm very confident in saying will be enjoyed by anyone who reads it.

Interesting story

This was a good story but needs serious editing. The story jumped around breaking up the pace and it needed to be shorter. Name errors threw me right out of the story (pet peeve). The girl Cassie who was always described as smarter then average was moody and depressed or happy happy. I started to think she might be bi polar. However the good guys were good the bad guys were dead and the hero gets the girl. What more do you want in a western. A soft 4.

FYI There is a lot of abuse described during the 4 years the young hero spent at a reformatory. I'm squeamish and skimmed over that part of the book. Just letting you know in case that's a deal breaker for you.

Even though Westerns aren't really my forté, I enjoyed this book by C.J. Petit. What it lacked in phrasing and editing choices was made up in both Petit's storytelling, and his strength in representing the Old West. These aspects are what kept me reading. Joey's journey is full of cruel punishment, but his perseverance ultimately left me feeling inspired. Furthermore, while the constant abuse during his time in reform school can be attributed to the rough world that Joey lives in, it can also be related to our own struggles in the modern day. This leads me to believe that Retribution has much to say a lot about modern world, more than we would typically find in a Western.

Another wonderful book.

CJ Petit is my favorite author. I have read all fifty books and I am amazed that even though there are similarities each book is unique. Each book seems to be better than the last. I put off reading this book until after Christmas because I knew I wouldn't want to stop reading once I started. As with all books written by Mr. Petit, the good guys won and I got my happy ending and I wasn't left wondering at the end f the book. Great book and I am looking forward to the next.

Sloppy writing but a good read anyway

I would have given this yarn 5 stars but all the grammar errors were annoying to me. Obviously CJ's spellcheck works but it looks like he didn't get anyone to proof read the book. Its like when someone texts or emails you but doesn't take the time to read what they wrote before pressing send. I loved the story but was consistantly annoyed by the sloppy grammar. CJ if you write another book i volunteer to proof read it for you before you publish it. Sincerely, dalefloyd@hotmail.com

Exceptional Author

I have read over 60 of CJ Petits books and have never been disappointed. It may be because because I was born in Providence, RI in 1949, raised Catholic and graduated from Bishop Hendrickson in 1967. I love that he references RI Red chickens and places like Tiverton, Warwick and Kingston. Looking forward Eclipse Coffee Syrup, clam cakes and RI clear clam chowder.
I know you’re going through hell physically but remember that your efforts are appreciated. Best regards, Bill Reilly

Congratulations C.J. Petit on Fifty books

You should be proud. You have written fifty great stories, and they are exceptional. They are all stories I could proudly read to my Grandchildren, not a curse word in the bunch. I have read forty something of them and still reading your list. I won't stop until I read them all, and I will wait patiently for number fifty-one. Thanks.

Retribution

Another fantastic story. Enjoyed the story. So hard to put down the book.It kept my interest from the
beginning. For a young boy who was told stories and lies, he learned the truth by a sheriff who believed in the young boy. After serving 4 1/2 yrs at reform prison. Joe learned to face life and be patience. He made his retribution by going after the Hogan gang. Lots of action.

Life in a Texas town.

Once again C.J.Petit has kept me awake reading. What a Fantastic Story of young Love. Don't let this fool you., There are many terrible things that happen along the way. I truly Love the desire of young Cassie to be more than a wife and mother. Women in the 1800,s had a very difficult life. Joe was a man long before his age proved it, His desire was to help Cassie achieve her Dreams. Great Characters throughout the book.

Another great book

I have read a few of this author's books and this was my favorite! Love how the author introduced a young man that was wild and heading the wrong direction and showed what having a good family behind him could mean to his life! Having love and hope introduced into his life turned this young rebellious young man into a model gentleman. He was strong when he needed to be but kind and patient at other times. Highly recommend this book!

Research

One of the better plots of C J Petit's books however I almost couldn't continue when he called the paint horse a Mexican hat. The proper terminology for this cost pattern is Medicine Hat and I strongly feel that anyone writing westerns should know this. I have overlooked many editing issues and even other inaccurate terms but this one really got under my skin. Again overall fun plotline and much different than a lot of this author's sometimes repeated plots.

Settling Scores

Another great Western by CJP. A 14 year old boy winds up in reform school after being in a robbery with his brothers but is determined to change his life. The sheriff who arrested him is determined to help him change and upon release, hired him as a deputy. I consider this novel to be one of the best of this author's novels. I highly recommend this author.

Excellent Western

I can't stop reading CJ Petit's books. I love the action and love stories in each. Retribution was different from most of his works because a female played part of the role as the rescuer. I can't wait for the next book and really appreciate the attention to proofing with the later books compared to some of the earlier ones.

At a loss for words!!!

Mr. Petit, you have outdone yourself with your 50th book. I have read many of your books and they are all great but this one took the number one spot for me. It was so hard to make myself stop reading at night. Please don’t stop writing, it would be a great loss!!

Still one of my favorite authors

I am a little saddened by the news the Mr Petit is going to take it a little slow for the foreseeable future, because he is one of my top 5 authors across all genres and the wait till his next book will seem like forever. But this book was up to his usual standard and also as usual once I started reading I just could not put it down.
