DNF at 85%. I am surprised I made it that far at all.

- The characters are cartoon-ish, all of them.
- There is no chemistry between the MCs.
- There is a creepy high ranking military uncle (good guy in this story, too) who just has to "sample", or at least try to, everyone his nephew even marginally considers a boyfriend.
- The villain is so insane that it's a wonder they made it this far undetected. For years information went missing, people missing, assignments not complete or modified or totally ignored. No one asked questions, no one wondered WTF was going on. NO accountability in this military installment. Whatsoever.
- I am not sure if the author was aiming for humor here and there, but it was lost on me.
- A virus that hides in semen but can be get rid of by plucking all the hair on one's head 🤔 Well, I guess it is a sci-fi story.
- After getting better, our assassin quits his wicked ways and becomes a fashion designer for the Wolves/military. By doing so he brings peace to the rivaling government agencies. Amen.

For a debut novel I thought this was fantastic. (Well it could be a debut.?.?.? hard to tell these days with authors holding many different names... annoying) Anyways it was also just happened to be what I was looking for at the moment.

It was a beautiful sci-fi adventure wrapped in some darkness, with a hole lot of healing and love.

We meet our assassin, Flash, in the beginning. He’s just completed a job and is showing his current lack of mental stability and hate for the work he does. He’s pretty much a loose canon full of hate and mistrust, and I love him for it. When he find him self in insolation with an unknown virus it’s up to Blaise, our healer to figure out what’s wrong with him and cure him before getting himself killed in the process.

Now I must admit that while I loved the book it did feel off at times, nothing really that I could put my finger on but just enough to make think of what was missing.

Also, while I loved the build up to Flash and Blaise’s relationship it felt kind of awkward and way to easy once the actual relationship ship started. In fact the whole first half of the book was action and adventure, anxiety and anger, and then everything just stops and becomes hearts and flowers. I’m not complaining because I like my romances a little cheesy but it was just an awkward transition.

I’m also still a little confused on how uniforms cause a international (not sure if that’s the correct term to use, but you get it) incident. I understand a majority of it about the queen being a slut, but not really why it was the reason the wolf’s hated the imperials (or whatever).

Anywho, I’m still super stoked that I stumbles across this gem and can’t wait to see what else this authors has in store.

“Please don’t die. Goddess protect idiots, especially this one. Please don’t die,” he prayed as he sailed through space.

“I don’t want to be alone anymore. I want to be able to walk into a room and not head toward the most defensible spot. I want to be able to walk down a street without wondering if a sniper has me in his sights. I want to have sex with another person and not worry they’re going to kill me. I want someone to fall asleep with every night. I want to not kill anymore. I want a chance. I have so many dreams, Blaise.”
Flash angrily scrubbed his eyes, sobbing out a breath as he finished in a whisper.
“I can’t do any of it if I’m dead. I want to be able to look at myself in a mirror again, and I don’t have time to fix myself. If I died saving everyone, maybe someone would miss me.”

Brilliant!

Jordan Black is most certainly an author to follow. This book is the story of Flashfyre and Blaise. Flashfyre, aka Flash, is an Assassin for the Tredecim Domis Empire who has contracted a deadly virus with no known cure. Blaise is a Healer assigned by the Empire to save Flash’s life. The relationship of our two protagonists slowly develops from disdain, to respect, to intimacy.

Ms. Black’s writing style is refreshingly top notch. Even though we assume there will be an HEA conclusion we never really know how the author is going to get us there. The characters are developed in a manner that grabs us. We are given enough of their backstories that we can relate to them. We feel their pain as well as joy. Ms. Black has a wicked sense of humor which is reflected throughout the story. There is just the right amount of erotica which is non gratuitously woven into a solid story. There is another book in the series which gives more backstory of the characters with the promise of more volumes to come in this series. Kudos to Ms. Black for a job well done.

I wasn’t sure if this book would be up my alley but I was pleasantly surprised.

Flash was haunted by his past deeds. He’s drowning in the darkness but one healer guides him back to the light.

Blaise struggles to cope with his own issues yet that doesn’t stop him from treating the dangerous assassin. Time is ticking and danger lurks around every corner - will Blaise succeed or fail?

The story was engaging and pulled me in from the very first page. There were parts of the story that needed a little more explanation. Half of the book was evenly paced but the second half felt rushed. The author developed both characters really well and captured their fears, insecurities and inner struggles beautifully. I gave the book a slightly lower rating because I just needed that little bit more from Flash/Blaise’s relationship.

Ever read one of those books that has flashes of goodness and you keep reading hoping to find that it becomes good all the time? Yeah? This is one of those. I kept reading because I was waiting for all those flashes to coalesce into a good story. It never did. Flash and Blaise have zero chemistry. Flash is one messed up guy from his childhood abuse. He's an assassin but you wouldn't know it by his behavior after him and Blaise are together. This was just a nope all around for me.

Entertaining

I enjoyed this book. It was a quick read, but I felt Flash and Blaise got the happy ending they deserved. There was enough action to keep me entertained, and enough emotional drama to pull on the heartstrings. I see a lot of potential with this author, and will be on the lookout for book two.

A great first book!

Can't wait for the second one. This book has all of my favorite and essential checkpoints: complicated, sexy, and vibrant characters, well edited, and an interesting new world to explore.

This is a really good debut novel from author Jordan Black!

The plot tells you the story of the assassin Flash, who was infected with a deadly virus and his doctor Blaise. They both have their problems ranging from PTSD to anxiety but that doesn't stop them from getting to know and love each other during the course of the book. Their relationship is rather slow burn from the start as they are patient and doctor.

The book captures and holds your attention. It tells the story without throwing around technical terms just for the heck of it. But still. It feels off sometimes. The reasons are as follows:

Flash is described as a badass assassin but acts like a lost puppy sometimes (especially at the end). Just because he is small does not a sissy make...

Also confusing is the uniform affair. I can understand uncomfortable clothes but an international incident is going a bit too far.

But all in all the book was solidly written and I has no sexy moments in inapropriate situations. In fact there are non for about 2/3 of the book. I would definitely recommend reading this book and I think this author is a raw diamond in the making!
