The world ended...Now, humanity survives on scraps, beaten into corners of old cities by Rads - radioactive zombies, a fallout of the nuclear war. In the year 2187, Scotland is one of the last homes to civilization, but the country is run by a corrupt, dictatorial government who utilize brutal police forces known as Shapers. Andy survives by trading trinkets for food, and relying on nobody but herself, her best friend, and her Uncle...until Shayne saves her life in an encounter with the Rads. But Shayne isn't the hero he appears to be. He hides a dark past, and his interest in Andy isn't innocent. He's part of a rebellion trying to take down the government - and they want to use Andy to do it. If she wants to live, Andy will have to fight zombies, cruel political leaders, and her growing attraction to a traitor.

The concept and the first half of this book are absolutely superb. The main character is endearing and frustrating in perfect balance. I love her. The zombie scenes (or rads as they're called in this) are scary and tense and it's written in a way that is accessible to YA readers and adults alike.

It becomes a romance about half way through, and the romance just doesn't feel as real or believable as the dystopian backdrop or her established friendships with two male characters. It is good and it is sexy, but for such a strong female protagonist to become so centred around the traitorous stranger so quickly, especially with the discoveries she makes at the end of the book just seems less believable than the rest of the story. I think perhaps with a few extra chapters and a little slower development it could work really well, but luckily with a touch of suspension of disbelief it doesn't spoil the adventure.

If it ended as it began I would give it 5*, but it's still a really good read and if you enjoy romance with your zombies then you might find the end absolutely perfect.

I will certainly be checking out more of Lynch's work based on this read.

“Radioactive” by HG Lynch is an end-of-the-world story that blends dystopian and horror tropes with epic narrative that follows the MC (Andy) and add some romance in the mix for good measure.

The premise of the story is amazing, HG Lynch succeeds in depicted a post-apocalyptic landscape, populated by radioactive zombies (Rads) in a way that feels eerie and even uncomfortable real. The year is 2187 CE, the location Scotland, and plot follows Andy in her struggle for survival with only her uncle and best friends to confide in. As Shayne save her from a Rads attack, a new variable is added to her survival equation, because Shayne has a secret of his own, a secret that would change Andy’s life forever with unseen consequences.

The dystopian apocalyptic parts of the story are outstanding, the romantic plot without being poor, does not reach the overall excellent quality of the tale, but doesn’t detract from a very good crafted, interesting, and overall satisfying story.

This was an entertaining post-apocalyptic book that held my attention from start to finish. Andy is a young woman who is a master Scavenger, searching for rare items that she sells in exchange for food and other necessities. When she is looking for Ivory buttons in an old warehouse (which happens to be fully of Rads), she is rescued by a hottie named Shayne.

Between the zombie-like creatures affected by radiation and the Shapers tasked with keeping the peace, life is hard and each person has to make their own way. But, when a group of rebels kidnaps Any and forces her to break into the Centre to retrieve a (supposed) Cure for the Rads, she has to rely on Shayne (even though she's not sure she trusts him).

There was plenty of action, lots of swearing and a touch of romance in the book. I was a little disappointed by the ending and would have liked to learn more about the different groups and the cause of the apocalypse.

The Good: From the start you are dropped in a world that has been devastated by war and the survivors have to live under a strict regime that has the brightest taken away to the government headquarters. Not to mention Shapers who are supposed to be protectors but shoot anyone who misses curfew or just pisses off the wrong people. Oh and Rads which are radioactive flesh eating zombies. Yes this book drops you straight into the mess and I love it. Our protagonist Andy makes her living scavenging things for people and getting paid. She has her best friend Rex and her Uncle Brett the only family she has left since Shapers took her father and murdered her brother and mother. Then she meets this strong Mystery man Shane and things get really interesting. By interesting it soon blows straight to hell and through all the crazy and mid-crazy of this book I had to read and get to the end. You will be at the edge of your seat reading through every page to get to the end of this crazy ride disguised as something as innocuous as a book.

The Bad: While I do love the book there were a few things that did irk me. First off Shane's over possessive behavior with Andy. While some might fight this endearing I think he pushed stalker territory including doing some things without her permission. Second that some scenarios seemed forced just to get Andy and Shane together or in tight spots that didn't make complete sense for someone as tough and smart as Andy to get in. While these things didn't ruin the book I do dislike scenarios that seem in-genuine

Verdict: Despite a few flaws this book is worth a read by any fan of zombie novels, kick ass heroines, hot guys and just reading in general. I had a lot of fun reading it and I believe you will too.

Simply love this YA zombie read!

This is a world that's been destroyed and all the survivors pretty much have to live by martial law by the Shapers who are pretty nasty and then also avoid the Rads who just will eat you. Just an awesome well developed world I doubt any of us want to be in ;)

Andy is a great stubborn female characters who has her best friend Rex and then comes along Shane which just turns everything around in Andy's world and then the story really takes from there and we learn so many new secrets about the new government and what's really been going on. I'm so glad this was a stand alone but wouldn't mind if more were to follow either.

Overall this was a great clean story and fit zombie/dystopia perfectly. So glad I picked this up on KU. Would for sure highly recommend this book to others who love this genre. This was a simple read and flowed nicely overall.

Wonderful job H.G. Lynch <3
