Perhaps Too Touchy-Feely for Men

Now, I know that we shouldn't put all of a group of people in a limiting box. But this book with its quizzes and exercises has more of a female feel to it than a masculine one. I don’t know if most men would be willing to follow through with all that this author asks of them, especially on this topic. The quizzes themselves are meant to help you understand yourself better in relation to the topic at hand. They seemed to have obvious answers (if you're doing it right according to the author), but the book lacked analysis of the answers, mostly leaving it for the reader to figure out himself. I also thought that some topics covered in the book didn't really seem to relate to self-esteem. For instance, I was wondering what finding and pursuing your passion had to do with self-esteem. The author did not make the connection, and it is not an obvious one. The author also gets into the somewhat arcane territory of NLP. I also didn't like the idea in the book’s subtitle making the bold assertion that if you don't have good self-esteem, you'll be a doormat. I don't think that's necessarily true for either men or women. It's almost as if the author chose this trigger word to get more readers who don't want to be perceived as doormats. All in all, I found this to be a disappointing read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

If you are looking for some practical ideas to help with your everyday life and self esteem, then you have found the book you need. This short has great suggestions to help deal with things that effect daily life. It teaches you tips to help with stress and anxiety as well as creating a positive attitude. While it aims at men, the ideas are well worth the listen for both men and women. Seth Thompson gives a warm narration of this book, so it does not come off as dry or school like, but gives you an easy way to grasp the tools the book offers.
