Fear destroyed their society, and only one woman is brave enough to stand up.
Abduction, abuse, and blame are only common for women in GreyBrook. When Reed is abducted and forced to suffer at Walker’s hands, she is lost to the pain and distress that many others before her have faced.
Hope, although dim, shines in Reed’s heart. Through her pain, she remembers the book. The one written by those that came ‘Before.’
The woman in Black, the woman bringing a rebellion to the forefront of Reed’s mind. Reed will do anything to find her. Not only that, but she’s sworn to bring GreyBrook to its knees.

As an avid reader, I normally speed/skim read most fiction stories... but this shocking, drama filled page turner made me absorb all of the stories nooks and crannies!!! By the end of the book I wanted to raise my fist at all the injustice toward Women in our own reality 👊🏾 Keep up the great work JL Park! Review by W. Hickey
I received an ARC of the book and offer my review freely and willingly.
She Wore Black is the first book of the Alexis Chronicles by JL Park. The book is aimed at New Adult readers and will appeal to a more mature readership as it covers quite a few sensitive matters with finesse.
The novel follows Reed Taylor, a girl coming of age in a society that ignores the rights of women. GreyBrook is not the kind of place I'd like to live in and Reed is just the kind of character to lead you on a mission to break free from the restrictions placed on her by the Elders.
The characters are fresh, the relationships are believable and the journey Reed and her friends go on is tumultuous. I've read a few dystopian novels before and have found the heroines to be whiny, but not Reed! Her metamorphosis from a subservient daughter to a fearless rebel is a beautiful thing to see. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a dystopian novel with a powerful message and characters who leap from the page and I can't wait to see what happens next.
She Wore Black by JL Park is an intense fantasy novel about a not-to-distant, dystopian future. I enjoyed reading The Hunger Games and this book has a similar vibe. Small acts of bravery and compassion are shown in this world where men rule and women obey. The main character, Reed, is intelligent, curious, and can’t help but be her herself. After surviving awful treatment at home and even worse on the day that she was supposed to choose her future, a heroic character begins to emerge. Seeking justice for herself and others, and trying to unravel the mysterious prophecy that sparks hope, Reed’s story is an amazing tale. The surprises and twists are well timed. The tone is a bit grim and some of the scenes of violence are hard to read. But the messages about bravery, justice and being who you are shine brightly. I recommend this book to any reader that likes mature fantasy novels.
I am left absolutely speechless after reading this. Firstly I am also gay and love the fact of having a female, gay, leading woman with such strong ambitions which I also can relate to.
Secondly, the storyline is so strong and what Reed,Paige, and many other women in this book and in reality have to deal with is inspirational to me and probably a lot of many other women as some men in real life actually do this they can take what they want without any repercussions.
Thirdly, Park has done a great job on not basing the whole story around the sexual assaults and everything that happened but included it in a story that was well thought out from beginning to end.
I can't wait to start book two which will be as soon as I finish writing this. I wish I'd found these books earlier. Congratulations Park.
A phenomenal intense read that takes you through the world that Reed lives in. She goes through a lot that breaks her down but deep down she has the will to be strong. This is the first book in the series and I am patiently waiting to read more to find out how Reed will takeover Greybrook.
I am an avid reader ( 5 or 6 books a week) and am always looking for an exciting new writer. J.L. Park is exactly that. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cannot wait to read the sequel.
This is an exciting story of a girl named Reed Taylor.Living in a dystopian earth where women have zero rights and men hold all the cards. After being abducted and assaulted Reed has had enough! As you read you get to watch her transform from doting daughter to a fierce advocary who fights for her beliefs with everything she has. It's for a more mature book audience as it does touch on some sensitive subjects.Just know it is done quite gracefully. You will get so absorbed and be so full of respect and admiration for our heroine you will find it hard to fight the urge scream empowerment for women everywhere! #girlpower #wearewomenhearusroar
I loved this book. I loved this book so much I put aside my hatred for e-readers and powered through even though I desperately wanted a paper copy. I loved this book so much I’m probably going to buy a paper copy! The story follows Reed, a female character in a Dystopian world, beaten down by an oppressive regime. I loved that she was unashamedly gay and didn’t waste anytime in letting the readers know this. Be warned, this book is for older audiences and there are some triggering moments. However, I think it is tastefully done. Thank you for such a great book!
Alright, first thing I want to do after reading this book is to thank the author J L Park for writing this amazing book! Really, it's not an average fiction we usually read. A drama filled page turner story which gives you goosebumps, in the best way, throughout the book. This book gives a firm push for woman's rights in this world where we don't feel appreciated for our intellect, individuality, and ability to do our best. Eagerly waiting for it's second part! And keep up the great work!
