Santos-Prowse does an incredible job at explaining the basics of nutrition, digestion and ketosis while entertaining with his quirky wit. I can honestly say, his work is the only nutrition books that I laugh out loud while reading and then read aloud to my husband because it’s just witty!
As for content, there’s a nice balance between his knowledge base, lifestyle suggestions, and delicious sounding Keto recipes. I REALLY (REALLY) wish the book contained pics of the recipes (or maybe his blog or FB page).
This is a great book! It's designed for a beginner but even if you've done keto for a while you'll probably learn something and enjoy the recipes. This book is so non-judgmental and very realistic. The author leaves space for individual lifestyle needs and provides practical solutions for being successful with Keto in a variety of situations. There's also a very helpful meal plan and EASY, delicious recipes with common ingredients.
More than anything, this book and Santos-Prowse (who is a practicing registered dietitian and has legit science credentials) "treats the whole patient." He considers the multidimensional, individualized nature of health and how it changes over a lifetime.
This book also has really clear, interesting descriptions about what is going on in your body - sometimes with hilarious metaphors. I also really appreciated how upfront the author is about the limitations of existing science... no pseudoscience here. It was surprising to me to learn what we know and what we don't know in the field of nutrition.
I think this would also be a great book for someone who has struggled with self-confidence or diets in the past; the tone is really relatable and empathetic. It covers things like how to move forward when you've slipped up or how to deal with social situations where you're pressured to break the diet. It's also an excellent book if you want to truly understand what's happening in your body.
Overall, it's interesting, helpful, and incredibly practical since it has so many tasty recipes. I've tried a few and they came out great. This is a cliche thing to say, but my whole family loved the recipes. Plus, understanding the science of what I eat has helped motivate me to be healthier. I totally bought a copy for my mom!
Last weekend I read The Cyclical Ketogenic Diet by Robert Santos-Prowse. It’s a book dedicated to helping those of us who aren’t nutritional scientists (well, he is a nutritional scientist, but also very good at explanations) understand how our bodies process foods in terms micronutrients, macronutrients, and vitamins. It was a very interesting read, and now I know the what it means for something to be hydrogenated (re-, de- and otherwise).
