The reader determines the outcome of this fantasy role-playing game by battling the perils of the dungeons and catacombs beneath a lonely mansion to confront the evil vampire Lord Tenebron
Sort of a cross between "Choose Your Own Adventure" and Dungeons and Dragons for one, this was a decent little story whereby you try to enter the Crypt of a Vampire and get out alive! Much harder than it seemed, and forcing you to rely overmuch on dice rolls that nearly always end with your death, I remember cheating near continuously to get through these books.
possibly the most open story in the series, there's a lot more options than later books that are more stories with a few main branches here and there, the rest either dead ends of distractions. it's perhaps unique in game books (though I'm possibly wrong) in that you pay yourself rather than a character in the story
The Golden Dragon series was one of my favourite of the era. I missed Crypt Of The Vampire when it was first published and had to barter most of my magazine collection to convince someone to part with it, to be able to complete my collection. Although having significantly culled my gamebook collection some years back (not sure what I was thinking), this series survived and the originals still sit proudly on my shelf.
The story is a simple and relatively linear one, with the plot line evident from the title of the book. The author was clearly aiming at a younger audience to those reading Fighting Fantasy and other such series. Having just re-read the book some 30 years on from the last time, it is also evident he was cutting his teeth within the genre. However, the writing is excellent and the story, whilst short and sweet, is enjoyable. Recommended.
