Carroll Smith (1932–2003) was a successful professional race car driver, engineer, and author. Carroll's books are highly regarded among amateur race drivers and engineers. He was representative of the club racing spirit: learning a craft and bringing together several disciplines in order to participate in a dangerous and often misunderstood sport. His "To Win..." series includes PREPARE TO WIN (1975), TUNE TO WIN (1978), ENGINEER TO WIN (1985), and DRIVE TO WIN (1996).
Very informative on how racecars are tuned. I read it to make better setups in simracing. Many of the things explained are complicate, and only useful when building a real car. In simulators, a smaller percentage of the book is useful. It's very interesting, however, to know the work involved in setting up a real car.
The book is old, but most of what it says is still good advice today. Carroll is also fun to read.
