This is a short mystery with elements of the supernatural. I read it mainly because of all the references to Admiral Nelson. Having visited HMS Victory some years ago, I find the subject most interesting. It does end in a rather abrupt manner though. The small pictures at the beginning of each chapter were a nice touch.

A new twist drawn from the original The Adventure of the Six Napoleons.

This one involves some historical documents to be watched over by Sherlock and Watson that soon grows to a more sinister plot.

Easy read although there were some gaffs missed by the review team

On the 100th anniversary of Nelson's victory at Trafalgar, Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson are asked to protect the family of Lord Nelson's great-great-grandchldren and their widowed mother who will attending the celebration with the royal family. Watson goes ahead to the family home where he meets Lady ward and her little daughter Andora who immediately charms the doctor and makes him her honorary grandpapa. When Lady Ward tells him her sister-in-law is planning to have her declared mentally incompetent so she can take the children, he's alarmed because he finds the lady very in control. When he learns that Lady Ward claims she hears children singing in French in the night, children she sears are those belonging to the French sailors killed at Trafalgar and that Napoleon himself has appeared to her, he's convinced of her sanity and that someone is pulling a horrible hoax, because that night, he also hears the singing and sees a Napoleon lookalike in the garden. Now Watson is anxious for Holmes to appear and help him determine who is trying to drive Lady Ward mad and how, if any way, does it figure into the celebration to held in a few days.

This story ranks right up there with the original Holmes stories. The episodes of childless Watson interacting with the children is poignant in a way but heartwarming as he is completely won over by little Andora and her older brother. This is mostly Watson's story as Holmes doesn't appear until midway through, and since he doesn't believes in the supernatural, it's Watson's credibility as to the ghostly figures and sounds that make the story interesting. There's not that much action but there is a murder, with a summation at the end of the hows and whys, just as in the originals. Makes one want to read others in the series.
