Buzz introduces Fly Guy to one of the coolest vehicles monster trucks! Buzz and Fly Guy learn all about monster truck technology, tricks, events, and safety. These "monsterzzzz" are nothing to be scared of!Award-winning author-illustrator Tedd Arnold brings nonfiction to life for beginning readers in the next book in the kid-favorite Fly Guy Presents series. There are humorous illustrations and engaging photographs throughout. And the front cover features eye-catching holographic foil!
Tedd grew up with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida.
He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, NO JUMPING ON THE BED!.
He and his family now live in Elmira. His second son, William, now stars in NO MORE WATER IN THE TUB!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published over 50 books as author and illustrator.
Historically, the "Fly Guy" books have been for early readers and have bright, bold cartoon-style illustrations of Buzz and his pet fly experiencing various kid-friendly activities with only one or two simple sentences per page. (reading levels of Kinder-1st grade) The "Fly Guy Presents" series use Buzz and Fly Guy's daily comings and goings to teach readers about high interest subjects such as dinosaurs, insects and monster trucks. The artwork in "Monster Trucks" combines the cartoon main characters with photographs of the big vehicles in action. Arnold includes charts, numerical facts on trucks with graphics to aid understanding, and the vocabulary is authentic and instructive. The Accelerated Reader level is 4.2 on this particular book and that raises the question that resulted in my 3 star rating: How many 4th graders are still interested in Buzz and Fly Guy? There may be a spark of "I remember reading those!" but I don't know that many of them will really select a book with such a "young" connotation when there are far more appealing choices for this age group.
The tiny Fly Guy takes you on a whole new adventure about monster trucks- from racers to tracks to trucks - dive into a world of facts and real photographs! I thoroughly enjoyed this book and learned a little bit about monster trucks myself! I read this with my kindergarten student who loves all things monster trucks, so he was excited to share it with me. I liked how it used real photographs and talked about actual racers! I would recommend this book to any child who loves racing or monster trucks. It's a great book for students starting as early as kindergarten (with help) up to third grade. Diversity: there is limited diversity.
A surprisingly complex early reader for those kids who love monster trucks includes a great deal of detail about the components (frame, body, cage, engine, tires) for making of a monster truck. Various antics (nose wheelies, back flips and corkscrews) and other stunts address the performance appeal of monster trucks. Features of the track include various monster truck jargon. Using actual photographs combined with Arnold's animation-style art to illustrate, some of it collage style. Includes a bit of math (The engine of a monster truck has greater horsepower. " 300 x 5 = 1,500. A monster truck has the power of 1,500 horses") Even includes the international shows.
Boys will love this book! Fly Guy and Buzz learn all about monster trucks and all they can do. There are lots of technical terms explained, photos and fact boxes throughout. The conversation between Fly Guy and Buzz is humorous. This is another well-written non-fiction book by Tedd Arnold. Bravo! Highly recommended for Grades 1-3.
I was not expecting to find a book about monster trucks to be so interesting. I didn't know they can do tricks like nose wheelies, or that their engines are not in the front of the truck. I also didn't realize there is such a big fan base.
Monster trucks aren't my favorite, but my son really loves them and he took this one out of the library. It was colorful and provided a lot of facts and photographs while still telling a story.
