Tracey West is the New York Times bestselling author of Dragon Masters, a series in the Scholastic Branches line. She has written more than 400 books for kids, including the Pixie Tricks series and the Underdogs series with Kyla May.
Some readers also know Tracey for writing books based on animation such as Pokémon and LEGO Ninjago.
She currently lives in the western Catskills of New York with her husband, Bill; their adopted dogs; and a whole mess of chickens.
Faced with rebuilding Bracken the Dragon Masters set out to find the Spring Dragon and it's dragon master. The Spring dragon can make plants grow a power they need to replace Bracken's crops.
Breen (the Spring dragon's master) makes Drake pass a series of test before he can request the help of the Spring Dragon. This adventure takes us to the fairy world, where Drake must outwit the redcap fairies, defeat a blinding fog, the dark wood, an ogre and a shape-shifting fairy,
With the issue of the crops resolved the book sets us up for the next installment: the dark wizard, Maldred sprinkled red dust on Eko and now she is missing.
This book was fast paced, but the resolution still felt a little too easy, even for a children's book. Overall my kids liked the fairies and the illustrations and we will definitely continue on with the series.
Between reading with my kids and my nephews I have now read a Dragon Masters book 22 times. And currently there is no sign of it slowing down. As a family we really love these books! A few years ago, I read the first eight books of this series to my son. Then his interest was drawn away. My youngest daughter really enjoyed them and the three of us read them, she listened to her brother or I read. This year my youngest has been reading them to me. She gets a little frustrated that I have not read ahead now, because it often means she reads an extra chapter or two because I cannot tell her what is about to happen. Confirm or refute her guess. This year we found out that my nephew has been reading them and that he was only 1 book ahead of us. He is reading the physical books and we are reading the eBook editions. This is a great story in a wonderful series. It is one of my favorites. My youngest daughter is insistent that we will read the whole series. And she has spent her reading challenge money buying all the kindle editions that are available. Including Griffin’s Guide for Dragon Masters.
I have said it before, and I will state it again, ‘this series really has staying power’. I have read some of the stories 4 or 5 times now. And have been reading them for over 4 years. And I still enjoy the stories as do my children. My son who thought he had outgrown these stories has been sitting in and listening to his sister read them to me again lately. It is also great to know that my brother’s family loves them as much as ours. It is fascinating to watch the kids interact and compare notes about the books that they are both reading. And to predict what will happen next based on the endings of the book, or title of the next as we queue it up.
One of the best things about this series is that it is a true series. In that each story builds upon the next. The stories are strong enough to be read on their own, but as a whole we get to watch the growth of the group as they come together as a team and learn to work together and support each other. We see some characters come in and out of the stories. At the end there is usually a hint, or a hook for the next story. In this one we meet new dragon master named Breen and her dragon Fallyn. Drake and worm travel to Inis Banba to try and meet this dragon to ask for help healing Braken from the earthquake damage. But once they are there, Drake must go on a quest by himself to the land of the fairies. And there he encounters many magical creatures and several tests. He encounters Red Cap fairies who look like garden gnomes. Hinky Pink a trickster. And a pooka. He must solve a riddle from the forest fairies. And even an ogre. But to find out if Drake is successful and elicits the help of the spring dragon you will need to read the book.
This is the first volume illustrated by Matt Loveridge. I believe he also illustrated two more volumes and the Special edition, Griffin’s Guide for Dragon Masters. I believe Matt is the sixth illustrator so far for the series. The illustrations keep a consistent feel and look. But each artist leaves their own mark on the books they work on. Some illustrations stand alone and some wrap around the text and span two-page spreads. And my daughter absolutely loved the cover of this one. My daughter absolutely loved the drawings of the spring dragon. Especially one from above as the dragon was in flight.
This is another great read in a wonderful series. These are fun books for readers both young and young at heart. They can be enjoyed over and over again. I am continually impressed with the staying power of this series. After multiple reads over several years I still really enjoy returning to the Dragon Masters. And look forward too many more reads in this series, as my daughter is insistent, she will read them all to me! And she wavered on a rating for this one but ended up giving it 5/5 stars! At first she debated 4 because it was scarier than many of the others. But the beauty of the spring dragon brough the stars back up to 5. A great read in a great series!
Read the review on my blog Book Reviews and More and reviews of other books by Tracey West.
This story was a lovely reading, accompanied by lots of beautiful illustrations. It is written in a suitable, smooth language for children, especially for young readers from grade 1 to grade 3. It is a story filled with imaginary creatures, with lessons to learn along the way. I like the fact that it is a series. If children liked the style and the language and the adventure, it would encourage them to get the rest of the books and read more and more. I don't search for stories about fairies and similar fantasies - I love dragons nonetheless - but I want to criticize the story objectively. The writing style and adventure are lovely, and the lessons within the story are beautiful. The story from start to finish is written in harmony and moves from event to the other smoothly. I'd like in the future to read more of the series to see how the series is going.
Still ridiculous that unsupervised 8-year-olds save the world, but this one was interesting because it didn’t follow the usual pattern. Instead, Drake had to outwit various challenges in fairy land with only a new acquaintance for company, and she was there to see if he passed the tests before he could meet her dragon and ask for help saving Bracken’s crops. Probably more like 3.4 stars instead of the usual 2.7 or so.
Our first book of the series, but hopefully not the last. My daughter chose it for her Scholastic order and it didn't disappoint. Fun story with plenty of predicaments, twists and good opportunities to discuss. Read it over a few breakfasts.
Another great adventure with Drake! I love reading these with my daughter. Book review according to my 6 year old: “I like when the guys were matching like “whooo” and he couldn’t stop marching. It was actually pretty funny. It was hilarious.”
{My thoughts} – Drake gets to go on his first adventure with Worm alone. He doesn’t get to take any of the other Dragon Masters or Dragons with him. He isn’t sure about it at first but he thinks if it can help save the Kingdom of Bracken then it is worth it.
When Worm and him arrive in Inis Banba it is nothing like Drake had imagined. He meets the new Dragon Master named Breen and she tells him that her Dragon Fallyn won’t meet with him unless he travels through the Fairy Mound alone. She goes with him for most of the journey, but she isn’t able to help him. He goes through many different tests and some tricks, but eventually he makes his way through to meet Fallyn.
Given that he is able to prove that he is pure of heart and that he doesn’t want to use Fallyn’s magic to cause trouble or chaos, Fallyn agrees to go back to Bracken and help.
This was a really nice addition to the series. I enjoyed meeting the new Dragon Master and Dragon. I enjoyed getting to know Drake and Worm more. I really like this series as it is really well written. The story and the illustration go together nicely.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series when it is released!
Cute book. I read it to my 4 year old for a few nights at bedtime. It was a simple story that she could follow and the pictures really helped keep her attention. She's excited to have another one in the series read to her.
Loved this one! Definitely my fave from the series so far.. the puzzles and tricks and tests Drake had to face were so engaging - really enjoyed this installment!
This is a really cute story - This is the 14th Book in the Dragon Master's Series by Tracey West. I love these type of Books. They are easy to read - all clean words - short - I just love them. I prefer to read Children's books than anything else besides Cozy Mysteries.
I will be reading the rest of the Books in the Dragon Masters Series.
I will be getting them from my County Library
I give this Book 5/5 Stars.
I highly recommend this Series - Dragon Masters Series by Tracey West
This one is our favourite of the series! the riddles and tests Drake had to go through to make it to the spring dragon reminded me so much of the tales I used to read as a child. It's the first time I feel this way about a non arab child book. My childhood stories were all arabic (written and read), so as I am reading in other langages to my son I have been feeling that something was missing. This book made it all different. we have ordered book 15 a few days ago and can't wait to get it
I love ❤️ it one of my favorite part was when drake couldn’t find Breen and so he asked the fiarys and did what they asked for then they gave the location of Breen and he went but in the end Breen was just tricking him but it was part of the test and it was worth it because after all of this happened Breen knew that Drake was worthy to be helped by the spring dragon 🐉
It's a good thing there's a dragon for anything you might conceivably want to do, like grow crops.
The author uses redcaps and pookas as silly characters, completely ignoring their dark origins. I'd rather she at least hint at their actual mythologies, since kids might actually be interested in that.

Especially by the time you're at the 14th book, you have to know what to expect from these from the standpoints of things like plot and character development. In those areas, they are generally basic and predictable. For me, it's a fun, safe, and nicely illustrated read at bedtime with the kids. These books are quite short, though, so we get through them very quickly.
My son loves this series. He has anxiously been awaiting this book for quite some time. We stretched it out over two bedtimes. Breen is a fun addition to the Dragon Master roster. Drakes trip to fairyland was full of magic and tricks.
I love this dragon masters book because it has flowers and they are called Dragon flowers and they are cool. you might LOVE this dragon Masters book too.if you try it you might LOVE this dragon Masters book too.
I liked the problems Drake had to solve to find the Spring dragon, but also felt bad for the dwarves or whatever they were being tricked into playing hide and seek for so long. Tricking him into see his best friend Bo was a good touch too. A fun little book to help repair their damaged land.
Overall, this book was good. I liked the ogre helping the dragon masters. Rated a 3 because I missed the other characters since it was a solo mission for Drake. Happy to see Bracken rebuilt and I like when the novel leads into the next story.
