Kakuloa: A Rising Tide

Rate this book
Successor to the popular Alpha Centauri trilogy, A Rising Tide launches the Kakuloa series, set in Alastair Mayer's T-Space, when interstellar travel is just starting to become commonplace, some decades before The Chara Talisman. Kakuloa, one of Alpha Centauri's planets and the only place that squidberries, source of a potential anti-aging drug, will grow, is about to see a massive economic boom...but only if Dr. Ellie Greystone, marine biologist, can figure out how to keep marauding tree squids out of the crops without disrupting the ecology that makes the berries possible. Meanwhile, since the area where the berries grow best reminds everyone of Hawaii, at least one developer thinks it's an ideal place to build a luxury vacation resort. William Blake, acting planetary administrator, has mixed feelings about that. Kakuloa is co-governed by Sawyer's World and Earth's Terran Union, but the massive drug companies' joint venture, Centauri Pharmaceuticals, is paying for most of it. Blake has to try to keep three bosses happy and Kakuloa thriving while dealing with the conflicting demands of the squidberry farmers, resort developers, and exploration ships headed deeper into T-Space.

Excellent +

+ means more than excellent, in my unprofessional opinion. I enjoy reading all the scientific detail he puts in... It makes the story so believable that it's more like reading someone's actual diary of factual events than a fiction novel. I have to keep reminding myself that it's fiction!!!

Always enjoy my time in T-Space

I have been wanting more back story between Alpha Centauri and the timeframe in Chara Talisman. Alastair delivered an interesting adventure and a lot of information about the T-Space universe. Hope more is coming soon.

An interesting and enjoyable tale

What do you do if marine animals are damaging valuable crops in Alpha Centauri? Hire a marine biologist to come from Earth of course. This is a good SciFi story without any combat or weird space aliens.
Very enjoyable.

squids, squids and squids

The relationship between squids and a potential new drug bring a marine biologist from Earth to Kakuloa for some new discoveries and adventures. There are characters that have interests beyond the issues that confront Ellie. Kakuloa is evolving…

Good storyline and intetesting science fiction

Enjoyed reading this book as a follow-up to the three-book series. Enjoyed the plot, though a little light on action.

A fascinating series. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop though. The inevitable meeting with the terraformers. Good series.
