Kakebo: The Japanese Art of Mindful Spending is written like a diary making it easy to use daily in tracking your household expenses. A book that is full of helpful tips and tricks that is sure to help you stay on budget. Each month you have a monthly overview or breakdown of expenses and spending limits set for the month followed by each week that is divided into each day of the week including a place to summarize your weekly expenses. Kakebo is a wonderful book for anyone who is wanting to stick to a budget and needs a little help staying on track.

I was excited to pick this up from my local library, but was surprised when I found that it was a “write in the book yourself” kind of book. The title gave me the impression that the book was more lengthy but I guess I didn’t read its description at all in our library catalogue.

This book has about 15 pages that tell you what, how, and why to use a “Kakebo” or “House hold accounts” book. The rest is template pages for filling in the month/week expenses by category to manage your finances.

It has some good concepts. Maybe I’ll scan the useful pages later and use it for myself in my own journal... I like that it makes you categorize all your spending and makes it easy to see where you can improve. (I haven’t actually used it so take this as you like).

This is a budgeting journal with tips, not a full-blown self-help book. People looking for the latter, I suggest borrowing this book from your local library to read the first section rather than purchasing it.

I myself appreciate how it gets straight to the point in the beginning and then lets me practice what I learned using the rest of the pages. It fits my style of self-help: show me the strategy and necessary steps, then let me actively utilize those tips and tricks; no meandering on for pages and pages about how I could theoretically be mindful of my spending. I understand this isn't everyone's cup of tea, so YMMV.

I borrowed a copy from the library, digest it and order my own copy.
