This publisher's pack contains Society (book three) and Hope (book four) of the After It Happened series.
Society, book three:
Set in the UK in the immediate aftermath of a mysterious illness which swept the country and left millions dead, the series follows the trials facing a reluctant hero, Dan, and the group he forms around him. They must battle the elements, find sufficient supplies and equipment to survive, and protect themselves against the most destructive force on the planet: other people.
The survivors have prospered, but their home is an enticing prospect for others to take. Besieged, they must respond with a savagery to dissuade further attempts.
Is this the end of society?
Hope, book four:
In the aftermath of the shocking revelations about the propagation of the human race, Dan latches on to a desperate chance to change the future which many have accepted. The group splits and Dan leads his closest allies on an uncertain journey to find a solution. They find themselves battling against the elements, against new foes, and above all, against time.
Devon is from the UK, having lived in many places until finally settling in the Midlands. His career in public services started in his teens and has provided a wealth of experiences, both good and some very bad, which form the basis of the book ideas that cause regular insomnia.
He first started reading for fun as an adult, having tried his hardest to avoid anything resembling academia growing up, and at that point the world became a far bigger place. He has been reading, at least one book at a time, ever since.
His debut works, the After It Happened series, (Survival, Humanity, Society) were published in April 2016 followed by Hope (July 2016) and Sanctuary (December 2016). The first part of the series concluded with the release of Rebellion which was published in June 2017.
Storming high into the charts with the first books of the After It Happened series, Devon launched into the top 10 sellers listings in the UK, Australia, Canada and the US, and he made the decision to write full time shortly after the launch of Hope.
Devon’s self-published beginnings caused a stir in the publishing world, and resulted in contracts with Podium Publishing for Audible, narrated by R.C. Bray (The Martian, Expeditionary Force, Arisen), before a publishing deal for kindle and paperbacks with Vulpine Press.
Further works have seen the start of a multi-author series, sci-fi/post-apocalyptic cross genre, futuristic dystopian and alternative history zombie apocalypse. Spin-off books from the After It Happened world have been announced for 2018.
The tale continues as Dan and the surviving community finds more survivors, repel invaders, and make few friends to trade with. Supplies are always a priority, making scrounging runs a necessity. So many people are added to the settlement that I can’t keep track anymore. Steve and Emma make their way to an abandoned Virology Research Center where Emma digs through the files to determine the cause of the virus. Returning they are captured by a military-looking force led by a dictator named Captain Richards. Richards will play a large role in this and the following books. The virus continues to rear its ugly head by causing pregnant women to bear stillborn babies. Marie tells Dan that she is pregnant. This revelation causes a split in the community as Dan, influenced by Emma’s research, decides to travel to Africa to find a possible antidote to the virus where it originated. Dan and seventeen more, including Ash pack up, leaving the rest behind, as they did not want to go. The plan is to convoy to Cherbourg Harbor, secure a boat, cross the Channel, follow the French coastline, convoy to Germany, convoy to and cross the Mediterranean to Africa. No problem, right? Back at the prison compound Captain, now Major Richards overruns the settlement, taking everything and everyone back to his base. Lexi, Paul, and two others manage to escape out the back to the trees. They ambush two perimeter guards, taking their vehicle. Their plan, cross the Channell and find Dan.
Dan and company are simply trying to survive as they encounter a new set of friends... and enemies.
The enemies are as bad as ever, but these new friends bring an insight to whats going on with the virus, which turns the book on its side.
Almost a year has passed since the first omnibus and Ford has grown his characters, especially the once timid Leah. Dan of course is as bad as ever. Warning... bad guys will fall in this book. The ending will shock you, making you run for the next omnibus.
This is probably worth a 4 star, but when the splitting of the group happened at the end of the book I lost interest and put it down about an hour and a half from completion. Picked it back up and had to force myself to finish. Think I'll be dropping the series as there are too many lines to follow now, too many characters that I can't quite remember.
Not the best written book but good entertainment. Some inconsistencies are apparent in the story especially with the availability off fresh food available in a supermarket a year later
I’m about to move on to the next one, so suffice it to say, I really like the series. My only qualm is some of the violence is a bit much for me - but very believable. Can’t wait to see where the story goes next!
Interesting storytelling with intriguing situations. The characters are interesting. It poses the premise of a virus that may cause extinction level event. There are no births since the event occurred.
Continuing this brilliant series, following the people who survived the mysterious illness that affected the whole country (world) …. still just as exciting I’m still enjoying R.C Bray’s brilliant narration.
This was an omnibus edition containing book 3 and 4 - Society and Hope .
I had started reading this series in the fall, before the pandemic. Takes on a different hue now. Still good, engaging characters and a suspenseful story line.
Getting over the initial weirdness of hearing an American speaking in English terms, and without the initial mishaps of the story, this two books get along nicely. Good pace and interesting plot.
