Born to hate each other. Lady Emmeline Grant and Noah Fitzroy, the dashing Duke of Newberry ought to continue the traditional rivalry between their families, hatred running in their veins. Yet, love flourished in their hearts like a rose in the desert, taking everyone by storm and causing chaos.
Emma Linfield has always been passionate about historical romances. SETTING: A family feud over a sudden, natural death; a grandmother driven insane by her husband’s abrupt death as well as by occult liver disease; these form the miasma that surrounds the tender love-bond between Lady Emmaline Grant and the Duke of Newberry. Add to that, the abrupt death of Emmaline under suspicious circumstances, and the simmering battle between the Grants and the Fitzroys come to a full boil! Mysteries abound—who hired Emmaline’s assassin? Was the carriage accident of the sister of the Duke of Newberry an accident, or was it an assassination as well? Layers upon layers of intrigue are peeled back before the kernel of truth is revealed. And just when all seems lost, surprise! An ending occurs that you will not soon forget! CRITIQUE: An interesting storyline of an 19th century Romeo and Juliet, taking place in England. Well written characters, that mature with the story. As other reviewers attest, it is difficult to put this book down! This clean romantic mystery will be enjoyed by readers of all ages.
Man OH Man... what did I dislike..Nothing, what did I like Everything!!! A new twist on an old tale of Romeo and Juliet. We had the feuding neighboring families. We had the star-crossed lovers. The need for revenge even though the reason for the feud was unfounded. Two Dukes, one trying to court the sister of the other Duke and the other Duke trying to prevent it. There were murderous plots afoot. Betrayal, death, months of grieving for the two Dukes and their mothers. The one Duke lost the love of his life and the other Duke lost his only beloved sister, or did they? This is such a page turner I could not put it down. There is about true love, romance, anger, suspicion, doubt, fear, struggle and Godly perseverance. I absolutely loved this engaging, intriguing, astounding book and I highly recommend it. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

This is an enjoyable book. I really liked the characters and could feel their despair when people were trying to keep them separated. Ms. Linfield never disappoints. Even though I was given a copy of this book by the author, this is my true and honest opinion.
A very well written romance with a great storyline and plot. The characters are well described and they develop nicely through the story. The chemistry is amazing. A writing style that captivates the reader from start to finish. An exciting, fast paced story with a mix of action, drama, page turning moments, twists and emotions that makes you keep turning the pages to know more. All the drama, fear, uncertainty, intrigues and suspense keeps you captivated. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises and an emotional roller coaster. A story of nice length and one that I only can recommend to others.
This one will keep you reading for sure!! What the women in this novel have to do to end the long standing family feud between the two families is unbelievable. As for the wicked old grandmother-------oh is she a trouble maker----And the two Dukes--STUBBORN to the core--Will Emma's disappearance and possible death bring them together--or make things worse--
As always once you have read this there is a place where you can click in and read a short story about what happens after the story ends---I truly appreciate this and so should you.
Customer Review Sewsummore 5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual Story Line! December 28, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition This was an excellent read with a plot that was full of suspense as two lovers fight for the chance to love each other against strong opposition from both families. I loved the unusual story line which kept me guessing till the end.
Good story, although the last chapters were a bit too 'sugary' for me. But it was way better than the previous/first one I read by this author (The Unusual Story of the Silent Duchess)
What happens when two families are at odds over something that was just accident. It is love that finally brings out the truth and being these two families together. With an over protect brother and a grandmother not wanting to know the truth And tries to have her grandson love killed. The best is when true love works out for both the brother and sister. I was given a chance to read this book for a honest review. I give it a 5++++
I enjoyed this clean regency romance with its unique story line. It kept me on my toes with several twists and turns along the way, proving true love wins if one doesn't give up and perseveres. I highly recommend this book as an enjoyable read; at times I couldn't put it down.
This book keeps you waiting with anxiety of what is to happen next. You won't be able to put it down until all is revealed. The title does it justice, too. It is not just a mystery, but a riddle. The story revolves around two families that have had a feud for years between them. This is an excellent read. Can't wait for the next book from Emma Linfield.
Engaging Historical Romance with lots of twists and turns. With such a compelling storyline, this book kept my interest from start to finish. The characters were all extremely believable and in keeping with the members of the Ton during this era. I enjoyed the final chapters and the extended epilogue.
ONE FANTASTIC READ!!! Wow! Oh man, talk about three strikes you're out, or third times the charm. You choose. This is one exciting, fast paced, action packed, hard hitting, pulse racing, smooth flowing, page turning delight that makes one thrilling experience. All the drama, fear, uncertainty, intrigue, anxiety and suspense keep you riveted on the pages and frozen to your seat. Twists and turns abound with unexpected surprises that leave you breathless and wanting more at the same time. The characters are complex and believable with such depth and individually it's easy to relate. The scenes are so graphically detailed and descriptive it's easy to picture each scenario as they play off one another in perfect balance. Emma did an amazing job bringing this read to life. Fantastic job Emma, thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
Emmeline’s and Noah’s story starts when they are young. She is out trying to catch fireflies in a jar and he gives her a start. He asks her how would she feel if she was in a trapped jar with no air.
Years later she meets up with him again and they have a word sparing and quote famous books. He is intrigued by her witty replies and begins to capture his attention. There is an old argument between the families and the grandmother of Noah believed that a family member from Em’s side had killed her husband but it isn’t true from years of believing the lies she told her self she now thinks they are true and she will do anything to keep Emmeline’s and Noah’s love from continuing. Even if it means death for Emmeline.
Good story but I felt as the time of the discovery of the missing young woman and the ending seem a bit off. We went weeks to months and felt as there was more time we missed. Where as it could have been made to seem shorter felt as we were dragged out into years.
I did enjoy the story as a whole, but as I said it felt longer than it should have been. No where did they say that they found the body until the end and there was no mention of grave.
All in all facts left out and the ending hanging on without words of the grandmother.
Oh my goodness! What a tangle from the outset! In this story , you will meet Noah, Emmalibe , George and Ann our central characters. Their extended family members and the bitter fued that lies between them . A fued , fueled and fed on the Leverton side by the grandmother who is so bitter it has eaten her soul. George loves Ann, but won't do anything about it , but jealousy tears ots head when she " flirts" with others and as a result they are often at each other in angry disagreements. Noah and Emmaline have developed from a childhood meeting and while their bond grows the enmity of their families does hamper their growing love for each other. I don't want to give to much away , but there is murder, paid assassinations, and general disaster in this book. If you love a mystery, and can keep your wits til the end along with the agony you will feel for Noah as he tries to maneuver threw all that is putting his life in turmoil then read this book. There is a HEA for our central couples , but holy moly , it's a long arduous journey . This is my honest review for this book and I liked reading it . I would further recommend this to fellow readers who enjoy a bit of mystery and suspense in a romance. Nicely done Emma Linfield!

This is the best yet. It is complicated, action filled with a mad dowager duchess, two dukes and a feud. Noah Fitzroy is the Duke of Newberry, his wealth comes from coal and he takes care of his mother and the dowager duchess. George Grant, the Duke of Leverton, has his sister and his mother to take care of. The feud is between these two families. The Duke of Newberry, the elder, and the Duke of Leverton, the elder, were out hunting, suddenly the Duke of Newberry clutched his chest, fell from his horse and died. One side felt he had been killed by the other while, the other felt they had done nothing to deserve the scorn. So it went on to the present generation. Lady Emmeline Grant is the sister of George Grant and falls for Noah. A lot of surprises left, this was one heck of a book. It kept your attention and you could not put it down. The characters were so realistic and the descriptions were amazing. I really enjoyed this novel and the intrigue that went into helping this to be great.
I received this ARC from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.
There is a war between Noah, the Duke of Newberry and George, the Duke of Leverton. This war dated back to their grandfathers, Noah wanted to end the war but George refused to even talk to Noah. George’s sister Emmeline Grant had meet Noah as a child and then off and on since her coming out and they constantly argued with each other. They fell in love with each other which caused George major problems as he wouldn’t let Emmeline see Noah. She arranged a story to get George to admit that he loved her friend and this would hopefully get him to talk to Noah. The whole thing backfired. Her and her best friend were finally allow to be friends again and after visiting her, she started off to see Noah. When they found her overturned coach and started a search for her with what they found they decided she was dead. Noah and George end up working t and to discover what happens or doesn’t happen U must read the book.
I received this book free from the author as part of the ARC team. This is my honest and voluntary review.
From the beginning, I felt that I had read this book before. Two Dukes, a family fued, a crazed grandmother & a love who was taken. I'm not sure if Emma Linfield wrote that story & simply changed the portion from the carriage wreck on or not, but it just seems too alike to be an accident. Overall, it's a good story plot & the Dowager Duchess is quite the character. I do not believe that I would be quite so understanding in the brother and lover's place. I am pretty sure that I would have been raging, after the immediate confusion and joy. There are characters in the beginning of the book that fall by the wayside, some of whom another book might be written. Realistically, the author borrowed from the bard to create her own Romeo & Juliette story. I was bored, believing that I have read this book before. Others will probably enjoy this book.
Ms. Linfield does not disappoint. At the risk of spoiling the plot, I ask you, what romance ends with the death of the protagonist? What kept me intrigued the whole time she was “lost” was my curiosity about how they were going to reintroduce her without causing extra torment and anger. It was surprisingly well-done, though it seemed a bit premature in light of the reasons.
Nevertheless, it was a compelling story with vivid characters and Gothic-style romance. It was hard not to fall in love with Noah and sympathize with his heartbreak. I had more trouble sympathizing with George's unrelenting need for vengeance. I didn't much like him.
Ms. Linfield has a gift for writing engaging mysteries, often taking me by surprise as I realize the full extent of her machinations. I cannot say whether the typical avid mystery reader would be fooled, but I believe the typical avid historical romance reader will be. I highly recommend this story.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review of the book. I do not normally read historical novels but this one was interesting. I'm glad I read it.
Emmeline and Noah first meet as young teenagers when she is out catching fireflies . She learns after meeting Noah that their families are long time enemies. Fast forward twelve years Emmeline and Noah meet again. She learns that Noah is now Duke of Newberry. Her brother, George is Duke of Leverton. Although Emmeline isn't sure why but Noah aggravates her nerves.
The book has family feuds, romance, royalty, family meddling and grief. All are covered well. I highly recommend reading this book! I did not want to put my kindle reader down.
Wow what a fascinating mysterious story, The Odd Riddle of the Lost Duchess is a story that will definitely keep you hooked and waiting to see what is around the corner. The characters are very well developed they will keep you intrigued till the end. Emma Linfield in my opinion has definitely written a story you won’t want to miss. Two people who were told all their lives that they were to stay away from one another, but sometimes good old fashioned fate will step in. I absolutely loved this great story and I highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
