Fantastic book!
I have been doing meditation for years, successfully. This was hands down the best instructive meditation book I have ever read! 95% of the reviews on Amazon are 5 stars! I have half the book highlighted for future use. This is definitely a keeper. Even though I am able to meditate there are a few things in this book that are new to me and I would love to try.

Meditation literally saved my life. If you don't meditate its hard to understand, its even hard for me to explain, I was a victim of spousal abuse, I had a problem with drugs and alcohol and had very low self esteem. Meditation and God saved me - gave me a whole new outlook on life! I was able to control myself and was so much happier, at peace.

This book is wonderful! There are some excellent ideas and instructions and it thoroughly explains meditation. Its hard. I don't want to make it sound easy because controlling your thought process, your breathing, and your body is the hardest thing to do. But once you master it, its wonderful! I haven't done it in a while now, but this book has inspired me to start again! ~ Thank you! I almost forgot how much I enjoyed it.

If you have ever thought of trying meditation and don't know how to start - this book is a great place to start! If you follow the steps... like I said, its not easy but this book is a great help. There are instructions on different kinds of meditation, how to control your thoughts, how to focus, how to control your breathing, how to journal (different kinds of meditation journaling - which is a great idea and I am going to try this) and just how to be a better person after meditation!

Here are a couple of examples from the book -

In this stage, the flow of thoughts is frequent but not constant. A meditator experiences easiness and many quiet stints lasting several moments where they get a glimpse of a mind free from thoughts – a no-mind state, a heightened state of consciousness. Your ability to meditate for longer period increases by a few minutes. If in stage one, you could meditate for 30 minutes, now you can meditate for 45 minutes.

This is one thing I am going to try (I used to focus on a candle flame) this is a great example of the instruction -

For example, you may have a pebble in front of you. It’s a simple form and you decide to meditate on the pebble to build your mindfulness and concentration.
Here’s how to do it right, step-by-step:
Sit in the yogic posture correctly and comfortably.
Observe the pebble for a couple of minutes.
Be mindful to not analyze the pebble for why it’s shaped a certain way or has a certain color and so on. Simply observe it with the intention to hold the image in your mind.
Close your eyes and begin visualizing the image of the pebble.
After a while, a few seconds, the image of pebble will fade. At that time, gently bring it back to your focus and you will be able to visualize it lucidly again.
When you hit a point that you simply can’t bring the image of the pebble in front of your mind, gently open your eyes, stay in the posture and look at the pebble again for a minute or two and then follow the same process of visualization as above.

This is a book I will be using over and over again. I highly recommend it! I am thinking I might buy it for my daughter who has trouble meditating, I think this would really help her.

I voluntarily posted this review after receiving a copy of this book from RABT Reviews - Thank You!

There are not too many books around which detail methods to meditate. “A Million Thoughts” is one of the few which is a fairly comprehensive guide – has excellent material around why you should meditate, how to go about it correctly and what you can expect from meditation.

The basic principles around meditation, the types of mediation and what each one offers is explained very well.

The book scores, since other than relating his personal experiences, Om Swami has sprinkled the book with excellent quotes from ancient scriptures and several beautiful short stories to make the point. The stories are crisp, often moving and make the point exceptionally well.

As Om Swami explains, there are various levels you can reach with meditation. While he reached a stage where he would meditate for hours and days together, many of us may not aspire for that. However, this book is for all serious meditators, however far they want to go.

While I believe people always benefit from a good instructor or Guru, this book is one of the best you can read to get started. Get going, and you might just find yourself. This book is worth far more than the price you can get it for.

Being a practitioner of meditation for over two years, my interest to explore more about it found me reading this book. Had it not been for the author's lucidity to explain the intricacies of thoughts and meditation, this would have been a simple how-to-do book. He did it so gracefully that reading this book enabled me to stretch my meditation sessions. What I loved the most in this book is that each topic started with a relevant story that sets the context for the topic. I still wonder how such huge insights are drawn from simple stories and I think this really aided the author to explain even the complex topics like gratitude, compassion, humility and many more. There were many times, during my reading, I found myself contemplating over his take on topics. One such instance is the author's explanation of gratitude.

"Absence of anything dictates the value of its presence. When we express gratitude, when we feel it in our hearts, it helps us value what all we have in our lives. And that is a divine start to a good life."

There are millions of such brilliant insights in this 'Million Thoughts' and for this reason I would definitely give it another read. And it is only after reading this book I came to know there are different kinds of meditation beside what I do. I felt there are some analogies that the author has brought up in this book which are quite similar to the popular animation videos in the Headspace app. Of course this only helped me to make more sense of meditation.

I would surely recommend this book to anyone who wants to pick up meditation but I think along with this book, a guided meditation app like Headspace or Calm would make things a bit easy.

A Million Thoughts is a beautiful collaboration about meditation, stories, and the personal journey of Om Swami. I believe things and people come into your life when you need them most, and I feel that way about A Million Thoughts. Om Swami writes in an easy-to-follow way, and his voice comes through as humble and loving. I was in awe over how in-depth he went into the practice of meditation. I no longer felt overwhelmed with the idea. It seems attainable after reading this piece of work. I am grateful for Om Swami's insight and look forward to reading more of his books. Five stars!

A wonderful book for anyone who wants to learn how to meditate.

I think that Om Swami is one of the best people to learn meditation from. His insights and realizations are coming from the direct experience and the skillset that he developed during his sadhana. He spent thousands of hours meditating, alone in the Himalayan wilderness, among the wild animals and insects.

He became one with the divine, and in this book, he tells us what he did to accomplish that, including his 18 to 22 hours of deep intense meditation every single day for 7 months, eating snow in the middle of the night when there was nothing else to eat, living in a small rotten wooden shack, where there was only a little bed, a tiny mirror and after a while the only nice thing among the rats, spiders, scorpions and those extreme conditions in the winter, was his empty and peaceful mind, which, as a matter of fact, was enough to recontextualize everything in his experience.

He tells us a couple of types of meditation, including concentrative meditation, contemplative meditation, mantra meditation, etc. He talks about the posture, environment, correct mindset and many obstacles that come in the way of the meditator, especially the beginner one, and gives us instructions on how to overcome them, especially restlessness and dullness.

Also, he emphasizes the concentration aspect. Concentration is the most important part of walking the meditation path. If one has a poor concentration ability, meditation will be a weak one. A strong concentration is the foundation of good meditation, thats why it is suggested that we should exercise our concentrating abilities separately and he tells us exactly how to do that.

He also touches upon the topics of being alone, silence, listening and gives us examples from his own life.

Om swami has a wonderful sense of humor too, so the book is full of amusing stories, and jokes that make this book very fun to read.

In short, I think this is a must-read for everyone who tries to learn how to meditate.

I don’t practice meditation, and I don’t know exactly what I was expecting from this book. I certainly didn’t expect to be so fascinated. It’s engaging, insightful, exceedingly well-written, and regardless of your personal spiritual beliefs or religion, it harbors take-aways for every human being on this planet. The section on compassion, truthfulness, gratitude, empathy, humility, and faith, is alone worth the price of admission, and there are fables, folklore, and poetry mixed in that provide interesting side-trips through this journey penned by Om Swami.
Five stars.

This book is an exception in terms of practices needed to reach the pinnacle of Meditation . Use it as a reference manual to keep a check on your progress in Meditation. Also the narrative style of Om Swami ji makes the book extremely interesting read.
However bringing the book in your daily practice is really what matters.

I came across this book fairly recently and was intrigued to give it a read because of 3 reasons -

1) that I have been working on improving my meditation technique (this year, 2020, is my 4th year of practice)
2) that I read great reviews of this book
3) that I have read 2 other books, Kundalini and A fistful of love, by Om Swami and liked them

and I liked A Million Thoughts too.

This is a great "textbook" on meditation. Om Swami very neatly breaks down the process of various types of meditation into concrete steps and explains the importance of those steps. This is not a one time read. Just like with other textbooks, you have to keep coming back to the book and keep refining your techniques.

Swami starts most of the chapters with interesting stories, making it easier to absorb the content.
Through this book, I got exposed to new ways of meditation, which I never knew before. The techniques suggested in the book are very practical and implementable, if you're a true seeker. Overall, the content in the book flows very well.

What was missing? I think I would have loved to hear more of Swami's personal experiences of his journey of meditation. He has shared his experiences in the book, but I was curious to know more.

Swami summaries art of meditation in one statement as "exert when relaxed and relax when exerted".

At any rate, I would recommend this book to everyone who is keen to learn what Meditation is and what it is not.

I am relatively new in this field of meditation. It is not as easy as it may appear on looking at a person meditating from outside. This was a much needed book which came around at the right time, that is, when I started meditating. It is clear, crisp and very objective on the topic of meditation. There are no digressions from the topic.
It will surely change or improve upon the way you meditate. There are 3 journal tables in the book which I have personally thought of using in my practice. Those tables are to make your sessions lucid and monitor your sessions objectively. It’s a good beginning for starters.
And as is said, well begun is half done.
Thank you Om Swamiji for putting out most of all you know, in such lucid language. Not a single work of yours has failed to teach and inspire me at the same time. Eternally grateful❤️

Hands down the best book on meditation. One of the major hurdles would be the onslaught of thoughts during meditation. The thought process has been meticulously analyzed and broken down for the neophytes such as me to take up such an enterprise.

There are detailed charts and the best of the best, a meditation journal to accompany us in this internal journey. When working out we do keep a logbook, likewise meditation calls for continuous monitoring.

Grab your copy and make sure to support the author by purchasing the book.

God bless you.

Encyclopedia of Meditation!
First of all I offer my obeisance at Swamiji's lotus feet. This review I am writing is nowhere judging Swamiji's work. It is just to help fellow readers to make the right choice for selecting the book. As I said in headline, this book is An Encyclopedia of Meditation. I have never seen such thorough book in the past with so much practical guidelines. The most important thing to note here is each and every word written in book is verified first hand by Swamiji. There is no second hand bookish knowledge being passed on.I have read few books on meditation in past but this comes totally on top of the List. Swamiji has given references from several sacred texts some of which are even inaccessible today. It's like all the puranic texts, all the work ever done on Yog and Dhyan has been boiled together and in extraction formed this Book. The book starts with analysis of thoughts Nature of mind, journey of a thought into desires. Then come details on path of meditation what is not and what is meditation which clears all the misconceptions about it.Elements of Good meditation and Actual practice of concentrative and contemplative and more types of meditation follows. Then there are virtues to be cultivated by a meditator which help retaining the meditative state in your wordly duties. Then comes Hurdles and what how they can be tackled. Also 7 Yogic practices are given in book which will help one to cultivate more focus and build concentration which in turn will help you meditate correctly. These can be practiced by anyone by taking some time out of schedule.Swamiji gives his own journal formats to maintain progress which I loved the most.I have already started maintaining Self Awareness Journal and today is 6th day.Loving it.Time to time Swamiji's gives examples using stories, short gags, anecdotes which makes concepts really interesting and simple to understand. At the end comes States of Realization.I pray for Swamiji's grace to reach till this stage at least in next life.Thank You so much Swamiji for doing such profound work for us as the book says 'It's dedicated to You'. Koti Pranams to your lotus feet Swamiji.

I can't speak for the rest of America, but I can certainly speak for myself in saying that I find myself quite often lost in a mire of conflicting feelings. Lost in the confusion of technology, lust for material possessions and a million other superficial worries and concerns. A general feeling of vague and hard-to-define dissatisfaction with the trappings of modern life and the meaning of my 'true' inner self, and where I am heading or what I really should be doing. In my search for just the most basic peace and contentment, I at many times become sidetracked by the mundane and absurd minutiae of our 'information age'. At a time that I needed it most, I discovered (through my work on the internet) Om Swami's stunning book A Million Thoughts: Learn All About Meditation from the Himalayan Mystic.

I have been on a quest to reconcile my 'true self' with my existence on this physical plane and found some relief and much insight in how to achieve a real peace and serenity while continuing to walk in this body. Through a series of teachings and story-telling, Om Swami discusses at length the strength of meditation, and the relief and inner calm that can be achieved by a quiet focus on my own inner consciousness. Focusing on finding harmony and being in rhythm with the subtle songs of our natural world and universe. This is a book that I will (and you can, too!) return to over and over as a guide to peace and love. Not just for myself, but on towards all things living. I am so happy to have discovered this great book at just the perfect time in my life to really be able to embrace it. But isn't that how things are supposed to work when we attempt to be in harmony with all that is around us? Thank you, Om Swami. For caring enough. My highest accolades are not sufficient.

When it comes to review a book which takes you to infinite possibilities, then it becomes very difficult to express exactly what has happened with the person after reading it, but let me start with few sentences that flows through:

First of all, I would like to say, I love to read books related to self development, as they provide push to move forward in spiritual path and in the same spirit purchased this book.To be honest as soon as I reached to 10th page, I had realised this is not my everyday “Pick me up” book, it is something beyond expectations.Wonderful thing is Author is not going to share with you second hand knowledge, but something that he experienced and experiencing since last say 20 years.

I could go and elucidate every aspect of book, but going to contain myself with few points, rest you will find as you will journey through the universe of mind, for me this book is like a boon, it taught me so many things that I am unable to count them, let me try to cover it in following points:

This is a wonderful book for everyone who wants to go deeper or begin the practice of meditation.
It has everything that one might expect from a book that teaches meditation, all the hows and whys with easy to understand and easy to implement.
Aside from the content a really appreciable fact is how everything has been organised, all the chapters concise and to the point. They communicate whats required in an engaging way, without beating around the bush.
I am yet to implement what has been taught in the book but seems like they are good. Will for sure include a few in my routine.

A gem of a book. It helps a lot when the author has himself experienced bliss and hence can share his personal experience. There are no personal philosophies or rituals to follow. The book provides simple rules to follow.

A comprehensive introduction to meditation from someone who dedicated his life to meditation. Really enjoyable to read since every chapter starts with a tale that reinforces the point being made.

Highly recommended for those who meditate, but have no deep understanding of spirituality or meditation.

Some excerpts I enjoyed:
-That journey could be the path of Einstein or the passion of Christ; it could be the path of Buddha or the moksha of Vedas.

-Someone with the tendency to dominate has the urge to gain more power. A person leaning towards the tendency of seeking attention feels the desire to have more fame. Someone with the natural tendency of possessiveness feels more jealous. A man born with the tendency to lack feels more envious than others

-Meditation is about hopping out of the puddle of our negativity and jumping into the lake of bliss.

-meditation is the most scientific endeavor you can undertake to take yourself to a level unimaginable for the ordinary mind, to elevate your consciousness to the universal level, to experience how you are not the body but way beyond. The keyword here is ‘experience’.

-Creating a charitable organization, working towards a material or spiritual discovery, devoting to a social or a religious cause are examples of intellectual desires. Better than the first two, these help you turn inward. The greatest thinkers, inventors and scientists were the products of pursuing their intellectual desires.

At this stage you experience extraordinary absorption and understand the reality of things unknown and inconceivable by the ordinary mind. Buddha said, “The one who knows the reality of one thing knows the reality of everything.” The fourth stage is enlightenment.

➼Hands down to the best books on yogic practices of mediations I have read so far in recent years.
The advantages are the author himself has investigated and experienced 1000's of hours of intense mediations and hence presents a quite interesting and lucid ways of meditations and why it is essential and hown it can enhance quality of your life.

➼For eg author presents various types of mediations as per your need such as ‣‣‣
①Concentrative meditation: As name suggests it involves razor sharp focus on somthing could be a n image in mind, breath etc helps in enhancing the attention span.
②Contemplative meditation: Are of two types eliminative and affirmative, under eliminative you repeat what you don't want to be and under affirmative you repeat in mind what you wish to be and ovwr time it traits become deeply ingrained in your subconscioness and helps you become what you want to be.
③Other types are mindful, observant and spirited meditations.

➼Author also describes some pre-meditaive tactics which aid mediation process as well such as Ekagrata,Trataka,Shravana,Sankalpa,Mauna,Ekanta,Tyaga etc.

➼Overall a superb book on subject books and the name is bit missleading it should have been an "A ultimate guide to meditations!"

While I am no-one to draw a review out of this book, I can surely introduce this book to a skeptic reader before buying the actual book.
You will find all praise in reviews, its a phenomenal book to get you started.

It is divided into ten major parts focusing on Relation b/w mind thought actions, Path of Meditation, Elements of good Meditation, Various Types of Meditation, Virtues to be followed with Meditation, Hurdles arising in Meditation, Seven Yogic Practices to improve Meditation, Monitoring progress, Meditation in a nutshell (Describing the ordinary and extraordinary paths of meditation) and finally Realization.

All portions are heavily detailed, written in simple language. Almost all chapters begin with a story to explaining the concept in most lighthearted form. This text does not complicate things with expert commentary rather gives straight point to point, crisp instructions of how to do your practice. For example it is very clearly stated that meditation is to be mixed with certain virtues like compassion, empathy, etc. Another example SwamiJi states very clearly within Concentrative Meditation there is a type of meditation -- Meditation on Formless that requires to have guidance from a champion meditator as there are aspects to it that can only be demonstrated not documented.

All the parts are heavily loaded with insights. I'll suggest you to get an e-book version because there is so much to highlight and make notes inside. If you are like me an like to use highlighters, make notes and bookmark, then your physical book might look like a rough copy at the end.

Most important point is to practice, using the templates given in Self-Awareness Journal, making charts to monitor your weaknesses and following the path diligently.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, not only a Master Meditator, SwamiJi is extremely skilled in writing. I specially enjoyed reading the chapter Four Stages of Mental Stillness. The description is so vividly beautiful that you cannot help but smile and visualize it.
Towards the end there are some minor typing mistakes which I reported to publisher via Kindle.

P.S. -- The chapter of Seven Yogic Practices is availaible in free ebook when you sign up for Black Lotus App (https://www.blacklotus.app/)
----- You can go to Black Lotus youtube channel to get insights on various type of meditation by SwamiJi if you don't read much but want to know about meditation. (here https://www.youtube.com/c/BlackLotusA...)

I hope you read this book and get the maximum out of it.

One Stop Shop Meditation

This one is a MASTERPIECE!
One Stop Shop for Everything Meditation! Nothing else is required, if you really wish to go down the path of meditation - this is IT.
What is Meditation? What it is not? virtues a meditator must have, hurdles in meditation, the principles, types of meditation and much more. Spirited Meditation – Wow!

As usual in the most simple terms, Swamiji has beautifully expounded on how to master the art of meditation. There are so many myths that I had about meditation, which were busted after reading this book. What makes it even more interesting is that Swamiji has shared His own experience and anecdotes, which are jaw-dropping, intriguing and humorous at times.
If you are really interested in Meditation, each chapter is a treasure house. All Your questions on meditation will be answered here!
Love the closure where Swamiji has written about the challenges that He faces after having done 15,000 hours of intense meditation.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who wants to pursue the path of meditation and be handheld to the final stage of Samadhi. This is for You!

I did enjoy this book.
I loved the anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter, every one of which is very enlightening.
As for the practical aspects of meditation, the book definitely helped me understand what it really means and what not -- and that it might not be for everyone.
Some of the practice illustrated are definitely feasible to pursue such as not going to bed until you've done at least 10 minutes meditation or the practice of "trataka", but others require a level of commitment that's what separates the "advanced meditator" from the "beginner", such as, spending days without communicating to anyone, possibly without even gestures.
Overall, there are some good takeaways. I would still recommend a read through it all.
Bonus points for those who can read Hindi - there are many a quote (fear not, all are also translated into English) for each chapter, which are also rather illuminative and edifying.

Awesome read!

There are some books which you can't put down even after you are done reading it as it takes god amount of efforts, focus practice and assimilation. This is one of them.
This is not just a feel-good five-minute exercise. It is a systematic approach to wipe off the tendencies that you’ve been carrying along with you over countless lifetimes. You look at the whole and you see the parts. You understand the parts and you grasp the whole.

This is definitely a master piece for those who have gone through several meditation books and still wanting to learn some thing that can be implemented in real life!

My fav quotes (not a review):
"Regardless of how you want it and whether you like it or not, the truth is you can’t run away from the two most fundamental elements of human life. The pursuit of happiness and the quest for freedom. From a sinner to a saint, a beggar to a billionaire – each one of us is working towards acquisition of happiness and freedom."
"Need for love, reciprocation, recognition, appreciation, companionship and sharing, etc., form the tall list of emotional desires. As with all things, there’s a price to be paid for the attainment of emotional desires as well. Most notably, these desires impel you to look outside for fulfillment. You need ‘somebody’ for companionship, sharing, hand-holding and so on. Since you search outside for inner fulfillment, you set out on a quest comparable to ranging the universe from one end to the other. Till your last breath, you continue to play a puppet to this quest – forever trying to please the other person, to keep him happy, to keep craving for love and so on."
"If you get married to a desire, be ready to pay child support for a very long time to come."
"Even though our desires are endless and we remain busy chasing them throughout our lives, it is not their pursuit that is burdensome. It is our belief that our desires must be fulfilled or that our happiness depends on the fulfillment of our desires."
"The sight of a slaughterhouse may trigger a negative emotion in you, whereas it may be positive for the business owner and neutral for the machine operator. It all depends on how you are conditioned."
"The term ‘emotional needs’ is a misnomer. Emotions are a product of the conditioned mind and as such mind has no needs.”
"Had you not uttered anything while eating that apple, it would be much easier for you to forget about the apple… Why? Because you left no psychic imprint beyond the taste and sight of the fruit."
"During your meditation, say the thought of an apple crosses your mind. You do not drop that thought. That thought may link you to the thought of you buying apples from a shop. Just note that the initial thought about the apple has now been replaced with that about the shop. The shop owner’s picture and communication flashes in front of you. You recall giving money to the seller. You are reminded of another customer, who was shopping for bananas, standing next to you. You further recall how she was carefully picking the bananas and her physical attributes. You are now reminded of her statements, her voice and how she paid to the shop owner. You may experience love, lust, or some positive emotion arising in you. You are tossed back to the thought of the shopkeeper because he returns you the change with your bag of apples. You take the bag and start walking. You are now reminded of the market conditions. You may further recall some unpleasant incident that happened one time in the market. This shopping cart had scratched your car.
Had you dropped the thought of the apple at the very moment it emerged, you would not have gone through the grind of mental karma."
"One of the most amazing things you discover is a radical change in how you see the world around you – nothing provokes you any longer. This is one of the greatest rewards of right meditation – a state of no provocation. People, their statements, their responses, your own thoughts, reactions, emotions and desires – none of it will be able to provoke you."
"A young man was mugged, beaten and left for dead on a street. As he lay there bruised, wounded and unconscious, a man passing by, who happened to be a psychiatrist, rushed to the victim. “My goodness,” he exclaimed, “whoever did this really needs help!”"

Before I rise to my defense, Before I speak in hurt or fear, Before I build that wall of words, Tell me, did I really hear?"
"Words are windows, or they’re walls, They sentence us, or set us free. When I speak and when I hear, Let the love light shine through me. There are things I need to say, Things that mean so much to me, If my words don’t make me clear, Will you help me to be free? If I seemed to put you down, If you felt I didn’t care, Try to listen through my words, To the feelings that we share.”

The author does a very good job of vocalizing some of the stages that you go through during a meditation session. Very useful for anyone who is trying to practice meditation and is getting frustrated on whether they are doing it right or not. I especially like the short stories that the author has illustrated at the beginning of every chapter to highlight the topic.

Uncertain why Om Swami says that this book wouldn't be helpful to a person who does not believe in reincarnation in the introduction. You'll find this book wonderful regardless of your spiritual and religious beliefs. Unbiased, practical, funny and logical enough to satisfy an atheist. A must-read for anyone who's attempting to meditate. Personally, for me, this book has been life-changing.
