Interesting folktales.
I bought this pamphlet when I visited Chiapas, home of the Zapatistas, a couple years ago. It´s a quick read as it is only 47 pages long and contains 12 folktales.
I'm sure each of the stories has a moral but for some of them the moral was beyond me. Nevertheless, the stories were good.
Many of the stories were told to the narrator by Old Antonio. He is the keeper of the tales of "the others" who were the original 7 gods who created the world. They enjoyed talking but when the started listening, they realized they were different from the others. The gods' first agreement was that there were differences and their second agreement was to respect the differences. The narrator, as told in one of the stories, is a Second Captain of the Insurgent Infantry, a Zapatista.
Folktales in the western world often begin with "once upon a time". In these stories, began "when the greatest gods, those who birthed the world, the very first ones, ...".
In these stories, men and women are equal. They may perform different tasks but joined together for other tasks such as coffee bean cutting.
I enjoyed reading these folktales.
