The Inheritance Clause #2

A Rake Never Changes His Spots

Rate this book
Lord Seth Templeton has no desire for life to change. He enjoyed every minute of his bachelor existence. Anyway, his older brother, the Marquis of Eastbrook, partakes in enough seriousness for one family. His reputation as a rake has never caused him any problems…until now.

Now, he must find a wife. And quickly.

According to the terms of the inheritance, he must be engaged within two months or forfeit his grandfather’s money—money that would save his family. Finding a wife would be easy enough for a man like Seth but he’s certainly not ready to settle down. Surely there must be a way out of this situation…?

In search of a solution, Seth finds himself in the depths of a place in which he never thought he’d set foot...

A library.

He also finds himself spending time with the clever Miss Prudence Hartley. The woman is a whizz with books and the law, and is thus, extremely useful to Seth. He needs her—for her strangely vast brain only of course.

After all, what does it matter if he likes the way she pouts as she reads a book or furrows her brow in concentration? He’s a rake. And nothing will change that.

A Rake Never Changes His Spots by Samantha Holt is book Two in The Inheritance Clause Series. This is the story of Seth Templeton and Prudence Hartley. I have read the previous book, but feel you can make this a standalone case if you wish to do so. Seth's Grandfather's will states that he needs to marry to inherit his money. Which leads him to Prudence...a very smart /bookish women who could help him figure a way out...or later he wants a way in with her.
Loved their story and such a great fan of Ms. Holt's writing. Looking for more from this author!!

A Rake Never Changes His Spots is book 2 in The Inheritance Clause series. This is Seth Templton's story. his deceased grandfather George Lockett has bequeath an inheritance on his 4 grandchildren but that all must perform a task of his design. Seth's task is to find a wife and marry.

Seth seeks out Miss. Prudence Hartley, 28 year old widow who is a genius in the study of law and mathematics. He hopes she can find away to break the inheritance clause. As the two work together they begin to fall in love and they mild sex at the end and get married. BLAH BLAH!!

What can I say!! I am so sick of Spinister 28 is so old in the ton. Pru is no longer just on the shelf she is buried in the closet. At least Prudence was marrid once. Her husband died two year after there marriage with consumption.

I hope authors will stop writing about old spinisters and widows. I like those authors who remember the young ladies of Ton were 17 when they had there come out even as early as 15 and they usually got married.

Loves comes a little late, but arrives right on time for the dashing playboy and his daring spinster. Holt never ceases to charm hearts while tackling serious subjects and creating inspiring heroines. Prudence is a tough cookie. Her brain makes her unique, but her heart is all too human. When a Lord takes notice of her smarts is when this lonely duckling blossoms into the sweetest of swans. Seth and Prudence are a dazzling blend of intriguing romance and heartwarming storytelling. A perfect example of why I love historical romance.

This was another cute historical romance with no angst and a bit of steam. Seth has to fulfill a task in his Grandfather's will of finding himself a wife within allotted period of two months. But unlike his siblings he decides to be proactive and find a legal solution to his trouble - a loophole that will get him out of this predicament. So with this intent he enters a private library where he meets Prudence, a woman described as having a man's brain in a woman's body. She is smart but very private. Thus starts a partnership that transforms into friendship then love. There was not much going on in this book, but I enjoyed their friendly banter and the society rules they had to follow. It was an endearing moment when Seth realized he loved Pru. I liked their simple love story.

It is was a cute sequel of the previous book, with this time the youngest brother, a renowned rake who has to find a bride or says goodbye to his inheritance.
But Seth, Lord Templeton is much more decided to find a way out of his grandfather’s will, as he thinks he has no need to marry.
To reach his goal, he enlists the help of a well educated and reclusive woman, Prudence Hartley.
Prudence might have enjoyed society life when she was a young debutante, but it was some years ago, since she has lost and retreated herself to avoid being hurt. So when she meets Lord Templeton, he roses long buried feelings.
There was no drama nor angst, it was a sweet story of two persons who find the one fated for them.

2.5 stars at best. The writer makes not attempt at any historical accuracy, which was jarring. The H has to complete a task to inherit and in doing so meets the h. She's a widow, great memory and student but she's socially silly. A sweet person but rather boring character. The story made little sense and this is my last my purchase from this author.

The gorgeous cover drew me in, and after reading the sample, I purchased the book, and I was enchanted with the writing as much as I was with that luscious cover. Lord Seth Templeton, our hero, is a charismatic rake and needs to get married if he is to receive an inheritance, which he desperately needs. He encounters by chance in the library the studious Prudence Hastings, who is working on her research in medieval law. Seth is noisy, he is distracting Pru, so she finally asks him if she could be of some assistance, and she is, as Seth needs to find a loophole in a legal document. Pru cannot resist the challenge, and this, gentle readers, is the beginning of a most charming historical romance!

Samantha Holt respects the tone and the mores of the Regency era, in the narrative and in the dialogues. Her writing is smooth as silk and particularly eloquent; but her characters charmed totally charmed me. I adored Seth and Pru, individually and together! How do you write happiness at reading such a lovely book? The story itself is quite simple: it’s literally boy meets girl, they fall in love, and they live happily ever after, but the execution is perfection itself! There is no angst, no unwanted seduction, no lies, no misunderstandings; it’s just realising that the person in front of you is the right one for you and letting yourself fall in love because it’s so right. The romance progresses gradually, as Seth and Pru become friends, and then more. Seth and Pru share an exceptional chemistry that leaps off the page; they made me happy, they made me smile. I wanted them to be together because they were so perfect for each other. For those interested, there is one sex scene, very tastefully done, and wonderfully set up. Samantha Holt was a new author to me, and I am over the moon with having judged this book by its cover! What a lovely, delightful, irresistible story! Now, on to book one, whose story takes place concurrently with this one.

To Inherit The Wind💨

Regency Romance

When grandfather, the Marquis, dies, his daughter inherits the real estate, plus a generous stipend. His will states that the rest of His inheritance will be split among his four grandchildren, but only after they complete a task he names for them in two months.
There are two young men and two young ladies, all adults. If the grandchildren fail at their tasks, the rest of the estate will go to a man named Hastings.
This book follows Seth, the second son, as he attempts to rein in his womanizing ways and find a bride👰 in two months, as per his grandfather's instructions. None of The children can tell anyone about their task. Only the lawyer, who will judge if their task is completed, and the members of the family in the room during the reading of the will can know.

The first thing Seth🐺🍆🌋 does is to go to Lord Wilson's law library and start looking for some legal way out of his predicament. He's a Rake, and doesn't want to stop being one! He finds a young woman there reading and taking notes!
She is Prudence Hastings💃, a smart, talented bluestocking if there ever was one! She is the only woman ever allowed in the library!

Lord Seth🐺🍆🌋 wins a smile from her when he gives her an expensive quill to use in her note taking! She's a woman, he's a flirt, and a handsome rake. It's in His blood!

Seth's🐺🍆🌋 seductive, manly charms don't seem to be working on her. But maybe they are......

Whats a Lord to do when he suddenly finds himself in position to take over the estate when his elder brother suddenly passes? Are his days as a confirmed bachelor at an end? Unfortunately there is the matter of the terms of the inheritance, that he must be engaged within two months or forfeit the money. Yes, a lot of money that will preserve his family and estates. Cannot he find a way out?
Going to the library (love it)to do some research, he unexpectedly seems to find a solution in the form of a widow, Miss Prudence Hartley. Talk about totally opposite? Well they do say they attract don't they and such is the case. They work together and begin to form a friendship, but can Prudence really believe this rake?
A delightful story that will have you smiling as you turn the last page. Samantha Holt does it again and I may even like this one better than the first book in this series!

Well written Historical romance - novella size. A lighthearted enjoyable story with some steamy romance thrown in. This author writes really entertaining stories, plus she's English, which certainly helps when writing Historicals set in the UK. 💘

England 1818.

The 2 leads met in a subscription library, nearly devoid
of other people. Once again they met by chance in the
library and legal scholar Prudence, offered to help Seth
research a legal issue in his grandfather's will.

This involved a 'slow burn' and a man who genuinely
appreciated an intelligent woman.

I, George Lockett, do decree that my grandchildren, herein named, will inherit my fortune in its entirety, so long as they fulfill the following terms. Each person must complete their task to my lawyer's satisfaction or their share of the inheritance shall be forfeit.

Lord Seth Templeton has no desire for life to change. He enjoyed every minute of his bachelor existence. Anyway, his older brother, Theo the Marquis of Eastbrook, partakes in enough seriousness for one family. His reputation as a rake has never caused him any problems.
According to the terms of the inheritance, he must be engaged within two months or forfeit his grandfather’s money, money that would save his family. Finding a wife would be easy enough for a man like Seth but he’s certainly not ready to settle down. He also finds himself spending time with the clever Prudence Hastings. She’s researching medieval history but is a whizz with books and the law, and is thus, extremely useful to Seth.
An engrossing read with well developed characters who are so likeable, no intrigues, spies or kidnappings just a lovely story of two people working together, become friends then lovers & all the while falling deeper in love. Their developing relationship was a joy to read. I love it when a rake falls hard & Seth’s realisation that he was in love was very moving as was his proposal. I read the book in two sittings & was loathe to put it down. Two Templeton’s have completed their task, I look forward to Theo & Min's stories

Seth Templeton kept his attention on Mr. Barton, the lawyer, as his younger sister tried to sneak into the study and their older brother, Theo, gave her a raised eyebrow for her late entry. Seth wasn’t sure why he needed to be here at all for the reading of his grandfather’s Will since it was assumed his mother and possibly Theo would inherit the wealth. But when Mr. Barton got to the grandchildren, he explained they would inherit large sums of money only if they fulfilled certain terms within a period of two months! Otherwise, their share would be forfeit and given to Mr. Hastings, a beast of a man who dishonored their cousin and ran off with a nursemaid! He deserved nothing at all!! Seth had no problem with Theo inheriting all of it to run the estate, but to lose it to that dishonorable man would be intolerable! He wasn’t even family!

Mr. Barton gave each of them letters describing the tasks their grandfather wanted them to complete. Angel was to get a job as a lady’s companion! She immediately said no! Seth revealed that his task was to become engaged to be married within the next two months! Seth stepped into a library his sister, Minerva, had recommended to research his legal options for avoiding his despised task. The rake in him admired the dark corners where he would bring a lady for a little rendezvous. He heard rustling pages and saw a woman sitting in the back of the dark, gloomy library. The librarian, Mr. Stuart, told him it was Miss Prudence Hastings, the only female given permission to use the books. Even Minerva didn’t have access here! When Mr. Stuart told him of the woman’s amazing legal mind, Seth decided he would charm her to get her assistance in his goal. He did not want to marry – there had to be a legal loophole somewhere! He sat near Miss Hastings, and when he sighed and put the book down too heavily, she actually shushed him! He decided to turn on his legendary charm and win her cooperation. He bowed and introduced himself as Lord Seth Templeton, at your service. “I do not need you at my service, my lord,” she replied succinctly. “I need you to be quiet.” He was stunned – his charm and powers of seduction had always worked on all women! She went back to her work, the quill scratching notes hurriedly on her paper, and Seth smirked as he said, “Shhhhh.” The battle was on! When he finally offered her a quill given to him by Theo when he entered Oxford, she was amazed at its quality and he saw a tiny smile briefly light up her face.

At breakfast, Pru’s parents tried to gently suggest she take the dog for a walk and maybe she would meet a young man. But Pru was approaching her spinsterhood and was not at all distressed. Her academic pursuits kept her happy. Even when she did go out to walk in the gardens, she preferred her solitude. She walked to the library and saw that HE was there again. Books were spread everywhere, and he had shoved his fingers through his hair, messing it. She saw his look of desperation and tension, but she would not pry. But she was unable to concentrate today! She kept glancing over at him. Finally, she had enough and asked what he was searching for, but he said he really didn’t know. His problem now became a challenge to her, and she knew she could find whatever it was he needed.

Pru listened to his dilemma and suggested he simply marry and go on with his life. But he explained that he had seen firsthand the pain caused by lies. He would not lie to a woman, and to marry, he would have to respect her and would never be unfaithful. But he didn’t want to marry! If he failed his task, his siblings would also lose and the money would go to someone very undeserving. Also his brother’s late wife had put him in debt and his siblings would value not having to need money from him. He could not fail the task – but if he could get around the forced marriage stipulation legally, it would solve his problem. Knowing what they were looking for, Pru said she would help. Besides, it would get him out of her library so she could do her own research in solitude! Would she be able to find the case law to free him from this obligation? Or would the two of them begin to respect each other and perhaps find an attraction they didn’t realize was growing?

This is such a wonderful series! Each has started out full of pre-conceived notions that would be completely turned around as each person grew and matured within the experiences provided to them. It was such a joy seeing how each character handled their challenge. Join in the fun of this wonderful story and see the wisdom of Seth’s grandfather in the tasks he set before his grandchildren which will put them on the right course in life.

The facts of his inheritance are to be kept secret but Seth finds he must tell Prudence in order to secure her help.
These two are a mismatched pair that no one would expect to be attracted to each other.
What's a respectable widow to do when she finds herself overwhelmed by a rake?
I thought book one was good but found this one to be even better than book #1.
It is amazing how well matched this rake is to this scholarly lady.
I gave this second in the series novella 4.8 of 5.0 stars for storyline and characterization. The intimacy in this one is a necessary element and makes the story.

Seth has heard his late grandfather's will and he has to be married within two months to inherit. Prudence is a young woman who happens to be a widow but also very smart, smart enough to be the only woman to be allowed into a vwet prestigious library. Seth goes to the library to see if he hmcan find a legal argument so he does not have to marry. Seth meets Pru and he tries to charm her but that does not work so he gives her a quill his brother gave him at college and then a couple of days later he is getting nervous so after an hour of staring at him, Pru asks Seth what is the matter and so he tells her and she says we will find the answer and after a couple of weeks they start to like each other. Seth takes Pru to a ball because there will be an opera singer there that is Pru's favorite but she feels out of place at the ball. One night they become lovers and she is thrilled and so when she finds the answer she holds off on telling him in hopes of being with him longer and a couple of days later she runs to his house only to see o e of his exes leaving and she is jealous but still gives him the legal case and Seth says he doesn't need it and after a lot of talking seth is abke to ask her to marry him and she says yes. Beautiful story.

I am happy to be reunited with the Templeton family. The previous book "There Are Plenty More Dukes in The Sea" introduced the family and the inheritance clause. I really liked this story of challenges laid down and challenges accepted. In order to meet an inheritance clause, Lord Seth Templeton must become engaged to be married within two months. Seth is a notorious rake and you would think he would have no problem finding someone to help him. However, Seth wants more in a relationship. He wants to be able to respect the woman he is with knowing he would never be unfaithful. His older sister Minerva is a bookworm. He decides to once more to crack the books and try to find a legal way out. At the library he becomes aware of Miss Prudence Hastings. She is a brilliant minded woman who "has the brain of a man in a woman's body" so says the librarian to Seth. Day after day Seth is at the library to the irritation of Pru. She sees that he is struggling and offers to help him. He accepts. As they spend time together, they get to know each other. Pru is not used to men seeing her as other than an intellectual. But Seth sees the woman behind the brain and it touches her heart. What is she going to do about these "illogical" feelings? A wonderful fun story of "illogical" love. I enjoyed everything about this book - the "getting to know" one another, the changes in the 2 main characters, no drama or angst, humor, budding romance and love. This 2nd book in the series has the youngest brother Seth, Lord Templeton, who is a well known partier and rake among the Ton, following his grandfather's task as outlined in his will. Seth has two months to take a wife and become engaged or lose his inheritance. Seth does not want to marry and has decided to try and find a legal way to escape his grandfather's demand.

Seth meets and seeks the assistance of an extremely intelligent woman, Prudence Hartley. Prudence had her coming out season which she enjoyed, married for 2 years and then her husband died - that was several years ago and she never went back to society and retreats to libraries doing studies on medieval times. Then she meets Seth and all the old feelings start to rise and they build a relationship as friends with no drama - just two people finding happiness with one another and the affections build in to something neither on of them was looking for but so happy they found it.

I highly recommend this series - it is easy to read, happy, fun and entertaining. The books can be read as stand alone as Samantha Holt does a great job at setting the story up. I hope we get more of this series as we still have 2 siblings with tasks to complete.

A good series continues.

Book 2 in the Inheritance Clause series is a good read. I was expecting Seth, a proud, self-proclaimed to follow the typical trip to becoming a reformed rake but not so much. He retains his rakish ways, but just for one woman, Pru Hastings. Pru is a blue stocking and Seth relies on her brain to help him through his legal predicament. Another Opposites Attract story in which a wonderful man reminds his strong woman of her worth and they HEA.

Why four stars and not five? Confusion, I guess. I wish the author would be open about the level of intimacy in her books. The first book in the series was fairly chaste, one intimate scene in the epilogue after the couple was married. This would lead a reader to believe the books in the series would follow in the same manner. This book did not. By no means is the book overrun with sex scenes. There is one explicit scene (tasteful and outside of marriage) towards the end and sexual tension follows the rest of the way. I love Samantha Holt’s stories but the level of intimacy matters to me. I know to avoid books with the coulpe half dressed, lol and some of Ms. Holt’s covers portray that. This series does not. This did not take away any enjoyment of the book for me. I love the shy blue stocking/ rake trope and this story fit that trope to a T.

An entertaining series in which four siblings discover that their beloved Grandfather is far more devious than they could have anticipated. Leaving his grandchildren an inheritance with a proviso throws the four Templeton siblings into disarray when they discover the tasks their Grandfather has set before them. In targeting their weakest spot, it shows just how in tune he was with his grandchildren, and ultimately the outcome proves just how perceptive he was.

Despite his rakish reputation, Lord Seth Templeton is more intelligent than he lets on, with an innate core of honor and respect for women. Opening the letter from his Grandfather, he is appalled to discover that he is required to be engaged to be married within two months. Upon his sister's advice, he haunts an exclusive library where he meets bluestocking Prudence Hartley. Recognising Pru's intelligence and her amazing abilities, he realizes that he has stumbled on a goldmine of knowledge, if only he can win Pru over to help him in his search to disentangle himself from Grandfather's scheme. Seth discovers that the more time he spends with Pru, the deeper his feelings for her become until he can no longer avoid the truth. He has fallen in love with her. Persuading Pru may take some doing, but she too discovers the power of a friendship that leads to love.

A RAKE NEVER CHANGES HIS SPOTS is the second book in the Inheritance Clause series. This book could stand on its own but is even better when enjoyed as part of the series and in the order of release.

This was a fun, reluctant friends to lovers to HEA, historical romance. I enjoyed my time reading this novella and could not put it down. The characters are very likeable and, though the progression was predictable, it was just what I want in a feel-good romance.

I loved Seth more than any rake I’ve read about before. He’s intelligent, sweet, and gentlemanly.
I believe the next story will be the bookish sister, Minerva. So far, she seems like she will be similar to Seth’s Prudence. I look forward to discovering the author’s creativity in presenting her story.

Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via BookSprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

This is book two in the Inheritance Clause series but this book also works well as a standalone novel. This author has done it again - she has created another fun romantic romp. This book is another hit for this author. I loved this story! Lighthearted, fun and steamy - this story really entertains. The writing is witty and sharp and the story flows nicely. The characters are all engaging and likeable. Prudence is a serious, strong and intelligent heroine and Seth is a charming, suave and rather rakish hero. Their two very different worlds collide and sparks fly! The teasing banter between Seth and Prudence livens up the story and adds a touch of humour and a whole lot of fun to their adventure. And the chemistry between them is simply steamy. This is an entertaining historical romance that has it all - an intriguing plot, endearing and adorable characters and a sizzling romance. I can’t wait for the next book in the series. Fantastic book!

Totally loved this book. This book has so many good points!! First the characters.. very likeable and consistent. They didn’t start to behave out of the characters suddenly. Both H and h were confident and proud characters. It was very sweet how the hero just loved the heroine exactly the way she was. He preferred heroine in her plain cloths and simple hairstyles. It wasn’t insta attraction. Another plus point for me. They spent time together, and genuinely liked each other. And the heroine’s family!!! They were so nice and supportive to the heroine.
Now the negative points. Historical inaccuracy, the hero went to heroine house at night because heroine’s parents were out of town, leaving the heroine alone??? Also the heroine opened the front door where hero knocked!!? They spent the night in heroine’s room!!? I mean how!? At that time of the period servants should have stayed in the house. Also I didn’t get it was why the heroine hide she was a widow!!
Stillll I really very enjoyed the story. It was sweet and well written story .

I do so love a brainy heroine. Prudence Hastings is all about learning, spending her days locked in a library alone with he books. Until the eventful day Seth Templeton walked in. With his dilemma of needing an engagement in two months or lose his inheritance per his grandfather’s will, she agrees to help him find a loophole. The two months together researching causes them to learn more about each other, and inevitably realizing they can’t stop thinking about each other. Seth may be a rake, but he is a unique one indeed. It is delightful to see hero fall for a bookish lady, and not want to change her. Even seeing her all dolled up and beautiful, he longs for her no-nonsense attire as she is comfortable that way making her even more beautiful. Their story was charming and delightful. From meeting her family and being charmed by their dogs, to his appreciation for her love of medieval history. This two are simply perfect for each other. He knows her like no one else, which is made even more clear in the ending which was wonderful.

Prudence Hastings was minding her own business, working on her medieval research when Lord Seth Templeton noisily entered her space at Wilson’s Library. Seth is researching a way out of being forced to become engaged within two months in order to receive his grandfather’s inheritance and he asks for Prudence’s assistance. Prudence was married before, lost her husband to consumption, and has no desire to risk her heart to anyone else but she is intrigued by Seth’s request. During their research they become friends and Seth finds the solution to his dilemma right in front of him. I love a bluestocking romance. I think it’s cool how some people have the ability to add large sums in their head like Prudence. The rescue dogs were adorable. I can’t wait to read what tasks the other Templeton siblings were given.

According to his grandfather’s will, Lord Seth Templeton must be engaged (truly engaged) by the end of the two months in order to receive his inheritance. Seth is determined to find a way out of his task, a legal way. He meets Prudence Hastings, a lady with a brilliant legal mind doing research at the library. She agrees to help him with his problem. As they work together, they become good friends, maybe more. What will happen if Pru finds a way out? Or if she doesn’t? It could get interesting.

This is a lovely story filled with fun, friendship, and romance. Pru is intelligent (very intelligent) and is happy to be away from society and immersed in her studies. She is a bit stubborn, but has a soft side. The interaction with her family and the dogs is sweet. Seth starts as a typical Regency rake, arrogant, full of himself, and confident with the ladies. Even though he is not happy with his task, he is devoted to his family and will do what is best for them. These two are awesome together. From the moment they meet there are sparks, all kinds of sparks. The story is an easy entertaining read. The epilogue is great. Another wonderful story from Samantha Holt! I recommend it.
