The snow is dropping in Berry Springs... and so are the bodies.
On a pitch-black wintry night, Detective Dean Walker finds a man in the middle of an icy road, with a bullet between his eyes—a murder that is eerily similar to his father’s, which was never solved. Coincidence? No, Dean doesn’t believe in coincidences. He also doesn’t believe in love at first sight, until he meets the victim’s wife.
Psychologist Heidi Novak is hardly settling into her new mansion in the small, country town of Berry Springs when she receives a late-night visit by the handsome Dean Walker. Seconds after learning that her husband has been murdered, gunshots explode around her and it becomes apparent that she is the next target.
With a massive winter storm looming, Dean races to find the killer and keep Heidi safe, while facing a long a list of suspects, including Heidi’s arrogant sister-in-law and a local, crusty cowboy. As the evidence mounts, Dean becomes more convinced than ever that his father’s murder is connected to the death of Heidi’s husband.
And he can’t help but think . . . will Heidi be the second love he loses to the ice-cold killer?

I have never read this author before so I took a chance on her. I can say that the book it’s not worth 5$. More like .99c but that’s just me.
Compared to the shitty books I’ve read lately this one was just ok. Heroine wasn’t a doormat, I liked her. Hero was ok. He wasn’t a manwhore but he wasn’t a saint either. He dated and has had few relationships. They both meet in the book. And the book span over a couple of days. I think even if she didn’t loved the dead husband she should have waited to have sex with the hero. He wasn’t even buried.
There isn’t much romance in this book.
Safety Safe. No OP after they met. A slow burn book. Cheating. (Not between the MCs.)
My attention was grabbed from the beginning, pulling me in until the last pages of THE STORM, bk #3 in Amanda McKinney’s Romantic Suspense Berry Springs series. I enjoyed and read through it quickly - pretty much straight through.
I liked and could identify with LE Officer Dean/MMC - what drew him into police work and his dedication and focus in his chosen career. On the other hand, I was more ambivalent toward Heidi/FMC which probably was my response toward her own apparent lackluster enthusiasm toward her (brand new!) marriage and her newly-wedded husband - and her seemingly lack of actual grief afterward. I understand the attraction of Dean toward Heidi (because that can happen) but it seems very “off” for Heidi to act on anything under the circumstances, or Officer Dean, for that matter. In real life, I don’t believe anything would have actually occurred between them so quickly (between a widow for under a week & Dean, the lead guy in the investigation of multiple murders, possibly including his own father’s). The intimacy scene near the end just seemed off - however, I still found The Storm a satisfying book and will continue reading other novels by Amanda McKinney because I like her writing.
Each title in the Berry Springs Romantic Suspense series stands alone with minimal overlapping of characters throughout the series, and can be read in any order (as I have done). I recommend THE STORM, #3 to readers who enjoy: Fast moving Contemporary Romance Suspense that isn’t terribly dark or angst-filled but has its Steamy scenes; Military/FBI/LE characters or/and characters with unique careers based in wild rural/mountainous settings; and stories w HEAs. THE STORM, #3 was the 6th title I’ve read and enjoyed this series.
Reader Cautions - Violence - This is a police investigative suspense novel involving murder. The description is very minimal, and not the focus of the story. PG? Profanity - Yes. Strong languages used. Sexual situations - Yes. Several scenes may offend some readers.
3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book more than expected. The mystery really grabbed me, and I was guessing until the end. The romance, on the other hand, I did have a few issues with. I liked the thought of it, but it is completely instant and there is no build up. Also, there is the small matter than this entire book (minus the epilogue) takes place before her husband's funeral soooo..... not a big fan of that. However, I found I was kind of able to ignore that since the mystery honestly takes center stage here.
I love the way it begin and love the way it ended. Fantastic fantasy and fun for sure when reading this book. Traveling time endurance training for the kids
One of the most basic romantic suspense books I’ve ever read. Dean meets Heidi after her husband is murdered and instantly knows she’s the one for him. They maybe have 5 brief conversations before they knock boots and profess their love for each other. This does happen at the end of the book, around 80%. Zero development.
One of my biggest pet peeves is when an author throws in a steamy sex scene with another couple from the story. Completely out of left field too. It always feels voyeuristic to me.
The suspense part of the book was great. A true step by step procedural crime solving book. Wasn’t too surprised by the villain. If you just want a mystery with a little bit of romance, then this is your book.
Ever since it happened, Dean hasn’t been able to forget about his father’s death—his murder.
Six years later, Dean discovers a body abandoned in the middle of the road, killed the same way as his father—with a bullet through the forehead. A proud member of the Berry Springs Police Department, Dean takes an investigative approach to the fresh crime scene, wondering who would want to kill him and why the body was left in plain sight.
On the case, Dean realizes that the deceased was none other than Clint Novak, an old school friend from the same town.
When Heidi woke up in the middle of the night and realized her husband was gone, a sickening dread settled within her. The death of Clint’s death was a shocking moment. Who would want to murder her husband? And why was the killer after her now?
It was a puzzling quandary for Dean, who wanted nothing more than to protect the grieving widow, whom he was captivated by .But, for Dean, “women come and go,” and he certainly could never fall for her. Could he?
Story was well-written and interesting, for the most part. The police investigation was slightly daunting, and there were a few too many characters for my liking. There was also a certain degree of complexity as bodies and clues sporadically appear amidst a dreary winter storm. The fact that Dean was so entranced by Heidi’s quiet elegance and beauty in a frightening and devastating time added a human empathy to an intense tale. I liked the deep connection between the two characters. Although I understood wanting to create scenes full of intensity, anxiety, and passion, I thought that the overall pace was lagging. It wasn’t that necessary to describe the antiquated mansions and desolated forests with such intricate detail. I think all that made it slower. But I’d still say this was a pretty good suspense tale.
3.5* ARC Review – Some elements of a good romantic suspense I have been reading this series recently because I received the ARC for The Storm in exchange for an honest review. Although, I read the prior books in the series, that is completely unnecessary to read this book. This is a complete standalone novel and the story has little to do with the other books. This book starts with several crimes and story lines that seen to have some connections. It starts with a flashback and then a current crime scene with similarities. Due to the latest incident, Dean, who is a new detective, is introduced to new widow Heidi. They seem to have an instant attraction that to me felt a little wrong with its timing. The story then goes forward trying to solve the crime in a magnificent mountain mansion that is isolated due to the weather. Even though, I enjoyed the book and this author’s work, I have several issues with aspects of the way we got to the end. As a few other reviewers mentioned, the relationship seemed a little off and the police procedures seemed unlikely. Also, I wanted more development in the crime and why the perpetrator has committed these offenses. I felt the end was rushed and I did not like how it was resolved. Overall I felt that the book had some good elements but there were other parts of the book that needed more development or exploration.
An enjoyable mystery and a new author to me (I am looking forward to reading her previous books). Detective Dean Walker’s father was murdered years ago and his case was never solved. Now he finds a body, in the middle of the road in Berry Springs, killed in the same manner. Could they be connected? When Dean makes the death notification, he meets the victim’s wife and is stunned at his immediate attraction to her. He knows he will need a clear head and no distractions in order to solve this murder. Heidi Novak is a psychologist who recently moved to Berry Springs to be with her husband. When shots are fired at the home, Dean has to find out who would want not only the victim, but the wife dead? The story grabbed me right away with descriptions of the storm that is making it difficult to obtain evidence. Ms. McKinney’s characters were so well described that I could see them in my mind. I really enjoyed my visit to Berry Springs and look forward to the previous books. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
Heidi wakes up to her husband not in bed with her. She calls and messages him but no answer. Then a police officer arrives on her doorstep to give her the news, her husband has been shot and killed. Moments later shots are fired and Heidi is almost killed.
Dean has been a police officer for six years, ever since his father was shot and killed. He's the one who finds Heidi's husbands body in the middle of the road. This case could be the one that makes him a detective. The moment he sees Heidi he's in love. But first he has to find the killer. Then another body is found with a bullet in the head. Could the killer be the same one that killed his father?
Now I'll be honest, this was a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The only thing I didn't like was Heidi and Dean eyeing each other not hours after her husband is killed. I would understand if Heidi and her husband were just married for show or something but that wasn't mentioned. I know they'd been married barely a year but it just didn't seem right to me.
Very fast paced murder mystery. Suspenseful and a lot of red herrings thrown in to keep you guessing. The romance side of things is not too overly done which is fine with me. The author has done a great job with describing the scenery; it makes you feel as if you are there. The characters were well-described and believable. Lots of action and police procedures. What a wonderful tale of mystery, mayhem and murder.
I received a free copy from the author and AXP books and I have left this honest voluntary review.
Dean is a cop in Berry Springs. He has been searching for years for the evil person who shot and killed his father with a bullet between the eyes. Present day Dean finds a body of a local man in the middle of the icy road with a bullet wound between the eyes. Strange coincidence, or is this related to his dad's death. Dean goes to inform the man's widow, Heidi of his death. While at the house, they come under fire, barely escaping with their lives. Dean knows he needs to work fast to find the killer before Heidi gets killed. The whole family is full of secrets and lies, so this makes his job more difficult. Also adding to the challenge is the fact that he and Heidi have a strong attraction to each other. Can they figure out who the killer is and stop him before more people have to die? This was a really good story and I will be reading the others in this series. I did receive a free copy to read and this is my honest opinion.
Seven years after finding his father's body with a bullet between the eyes, Dean Walker is presented with a similar murder. This time the victim is Clint Novak, whose wife Heidi is shot at just moments after Dean delivers the news of her husband's death. As the weather deteriorates, Dean is tasked with finding a murderer among the Novak family and staff, all the while, trying to ignore his growing attraction to Heidi.
The Storm is a very average romantic suspense that relies not only on coincidence but also evidence that doesn't appear until right at the very end of the story, making it impossible for the reader to figure out the guilty party. Another problem with the story is the lack of character development, no doubt due to the short length of the novel, which also results in instalove between the protagonists. Overall, The Storm is a disappointment from an author whose work I have previously enjoyed. 2 1/2 stars
Returning to the station near midnight, Detective Dean Walker found the body of wealthy resident, Clint Novak, on a snowy road. Dean’s memories hurtled him back six years when his dad was also by a bullet between the eyes. After working the scene, Dean visits the victim’s wife, Heidi, a psychologist; he recalled dad’s last words that the woman meant for Dean, would knock him off his feet. Heidi did exactly that. Looking at Dean, Heidi realized she felt things she’d never felt for Clint.
Heidi was well liked though Clint and his bitter sister, Julie, weren’t. As kin and heir, anxious for the inheritance, Julie arrived soon after a bullet missed Heidi who suggested an obsessed ex-patient as a suspect. Julie’s actions and answers put her at the top of the suspect list. That theory dies when Julie’s discovered with a bullet hole between her eyes putting Heidi’s ranch hand/Julie’s boyfriend as their top suspect. Rating: 3.5stars
The Story is a wicked good romantic suspense by Amanda McKinney. Ms. McKinney, time after time, has kept me enthralled with her stories. This book is no exception, once started, I had to read till the end. This book is well-written and populated with a spectacular cast of characters. Dean's father was shot in the head and his case was never solved. Now a detective, when Dean finds a man in the road with a bullet between his eyes it's so familiar it's spooky. When Dean arrives to tell Heidi her husband has been murdered and saves her from the same fate, Dean suspects everyone except Heidi. Dean and Heidi's story is fast-paced, full of drama, action and suspense. I loved this book from cover to cover and look forward to my next book by Amanda McKinney. The Storm is part of the Berry Springs Series but can be read as a standalone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.
The Storm is another great romantic suspense book by Amanda McKinney, and even if it's part of the Berry Springs series, in can be perfectly read as a stand alone. I read it in less than two days and stayed up late to finish it. I did have two issues with the story, which are the reason why I'm rating The Storm with just four stars and not five. First, there are a few plot details that deserved follow up, in particular Heidi's stalker, which we are at a certain point led to believe could be a suspect in the murders but then is never mentioned again. And second, while I'm all for love at first sight, I find it hard to believe that Heidi would engage in a physical relationship with Dean less than two days after her husband was killed. In any case, and discounting the above, if you love romantic suspense The Storm is still a book you shouldn't miss.
This is the first book I have read from this series and this writer. I was interested because it is a mystery book. What a mystery indeed. I loved it . Amazing storyline. This book grips you right from the beginning when Dean is out with his dad bonding. But bonding time leads to something tragic. Years later Dean is now an officer still dealing with everything. One night beginning of a nasty storm Dean finds a body. Hold on because from there you are taken on a wild ride. Twists turns suspense . This book has it all. Amazing characters a little steamy romance. Just so well written enjoyable keeps you on the edge of your seat trying to figure out who did it. Highly recommend.I will definitely be reading from this series and writer.
Illness prevented me from reading this book as soon as I received it from the Goodreads giveaway. Worth the wait. I love a good mystery with twists and turns and this novel certainly filled the bill! Kept me guessing as to the killer. The characters were well-described so I had a clear vision of what they looked like. The surroundings were also described in great detail so again I was able to visualize where things were taking place as well as the location. Maybe because we have been having the same type of weather, it was very clear. This is my first book by this author that I have read and it has certainly peaked my interest in reading her other books.
Heidi Novak awoke to find her husband Clint gone at two am. Not knowing where he was she arose and went downstairs in the mansion she now lives in. As she was searching a truck pulled into her drive. Detective Dean has come to inform the wife of her husband's death. As they are standing inside the front door shots ring out and Dean covers her body as they call to the floor. Things start happening from there that were more questions to the investigation of murder. This is a cannotputdowntiltheend story. I loved it and the romance thrown in. I will be waiting for the next book in the series to come out. Worth reading.
Officer Dane Walker has never stopped looking for his Dad's killer so when a respected and wealthy local resident turns up dead killed in the same way he is thrilled to be asked to be the Detective in charge. On arriving to question the man's widow he is floored by his instant attraction only to find himself saving her from an unknown gunman. With the weather against the cops and a killer on the loose can Dane save not only the woman he has come to care for but also find the man who killed his Dad seven long years ago. I really enjoyed this thrilling romantic suspense that I read for free with Kindle Unlimited.
This had a pretty good story line, but attention to accuracy would have helped me not to keep getting yanked out of the story. Little things like using slug, bullet and casing interchangeably are distracting mistakes and easily remedied with a few minutes on google. On the positive side she does a good job of creating characters that are likable and easy to invest in. Thats a must for me. No matter how good the story or writing, I won’t read a book with characters I don’t. Like.
I thought the book was okay. I really enjoyed the mystery. I could have done without the romance. The heroine falling so fast for the hero after her husband is murdered seems like a real stretch to me and unrealistic. However, since the mystery takes center stage I was able to overlook the romance. The suspense was great but I wasn't too surprised with who the villain turned out to be. Overall, a solid read.
“I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.”
The Storm is the perfect title for this book since most of it takes place during a winter storm, over the course of a couple of days. It's a very enjoyable murder mystery/romance and I was completely caught up in the story. Dean and Heidi are likable characters who have great chemistry. There is never a dull moment in this story and I really had no idea who the murderer was until the end of the book, so that's saying something! I can't wait to read the other books in the series.
I am voluntarily reviewing an advance reader copy of this book.
Loved this book! I enjoyed how the author painted the pictures of each character so well. It’s as if they came alive right before my eyes & before I realized it was happening, I felt like I knew them. This book was the perfect balance of wanting to read faster to find out what happens & wanting to slow down because I didn’t want it to be over. I story line kept me guessing. I’m pretty sure I mentally accused each character of being the killer at one point or another. I am a huge fan of this author’s style!
Dean is a Berry Springs police officer working his first case as lead detective. Like the other books in this series, crimes new and old are linked together. Heidi is the widow of the victim in Dean's case. From their first interaction they're attracted to each other. Somehow they fall in love despite the fact he's trying to solve her husband's murder. Despite being a small town where gossip is the favorite pastime, no one comments of their relationship. Fortunately the the townsfolk of Berry Springs makes this series.
Loved this book! Such a great, suspenseful story. Amanda McKinney definitely has a knack for writing amazing mysteries...and not to be outdone, the romance level is always off the charts! What a wonderful combination that makes for such a compelling read. I've read six of her books now and each and everyone has been unique in it's own way and stay up way too late, can't put it down awesome.
WARNING: You won’t want to put this book down! This is one of the most amazing books I’ve read in a long time. Right up there with some of the most renown. There was a tense undertow until the very end when it ended with a “bang”. The characters are realistic as is the premise. (I’ve already added the preceding books in this series to my TBR list). I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book.
As a suspense romance book, it held my interest as a mystery, but failed on the romance. There was no build-up or chemistry between Dean, the police detective and Heidi, the widow. My Gosh, Heidi’s husband was brutally murdered and she is sleeping with the detective assigned to the case even before her late husband is buried. I thought there was more sparks between the secondary couple of Eve and Officer Hayes.
Dean meets Heidi when her husband is murdered. The immediate attraction between the two is unexpected but undeniable. Now all they have to do is stay safe from the weather and survive a murderer. Book three in this series does not disappoint on the action or the feels. Deep characters and strong storyline that makes you want to see what could happen next. Awesome read! Enjoy!!!
