Carolyn Keene is a writer pen name that was used by many different people- both men and women- over the years. The company that was the creator of the Nancy Drew series, the Stratemeyer Syndicate, hired a variety of writers. For Nancy Drew, the writers used the pseudonym Carolyn Keene to assure anonymity of the creator.

Edna and Harriet Stratemeyer inherited the company from their father Edward Stratemeyer. Edna contributed 10 plot outlines before passing the reins to her sister Harriet. It was Mildred Benson (aka: Mildred A. Wirt), who breathed such a feisty spirit into Nancy's character. Mildred wrote 23 of the original 30 Nancy Drew Mystery Stories®, including the first three. It was her characterization that helped make Nancy an instant hit. The Stratemeyer Syndicate's devotion to the series over the years under the reins of Harriet Stratemeyer Adams helped to keep the series alive and on store shelves for each succeeding generation of girls and boys. In 1959, Harriet, along with several writers, began a 25-year project to revise the earlier Carolyn Keene novels. The Nancy Drew books were condensed, racial stereotypes were removed, and the language was updated. In a few cases, outdated plots were completely rewritten.

Other writers of Nancy Drew volumes include Harriet herself, she wrote most of the series after Mildred quit writing for the Syndicate and in 1959 began a revision of the first 34 texts. The role of the writer of "Carolyn Keene" passed temporarily to Walter Karig who wrote three novels during the Great Depression. Also contributing to Nancy Drew's prolific existence were Leslie McFarlane, James Duncan Lawrence, Nancy Axelrod, Priscilla Doll, Charles Strong, Alma Sasse, Wilhelmina Rankin, George Waller Jr., and Margaret Scherf.

My goodreads friends and I continue our monthly Nancy Drew reads. I noticed that I am now up to ten for the yearand I’ve noticed that no matter what age Nancy is featured in these cases, the books are addictive, to the point of impeding my other reading. Thanksgiving is one of my favorite holidays. It has to be the food and football and long weekend off of work. Yes, I know the meaning of the holiday but if food and football are involved, then I’m sold. I suggested for November to find a Nancy Drew case or cases featuring thanksgiving. I always read a lot of kids books around holidays to get me in the mood. The traditional Nancy Drew series did not feature holidays nor do the diaries. The clue crew which features an eight year old Nancy and friends, has two books centered around the Thanksgiving holiday. It was enough to pique my interest.

Nancy, Bess, and George, otherwise known as the clue crew, are entered in the Turkey trot. Entrants have to dress up as turkeys and the winning team receives a chocolate Turkey from a new chocolate shop that just opened in River Heights. Of course, the chocolate Turkey has gone missing, and the clue crew is on it. At only eighty pages, the clue crew books are designed for younger readers and just long enough for them to hold an interest. All the characters are kids who work together as a team to solve mysteries. While the diaries series is the same length as the traditional Nancy Drew series, the clue crew is half the length and is a stretch to appeal to the purist Nancy Drew fan in me. Then again, Nancy had to have gotten her start somewhere, and that somewhere is a positive upbringing from her father and housekeeper/mother figure. They encouraged her to think and work independently and follow rules and that lead to Nancy solving mysteries at a young age. This series is designed to introduce young readers to the timeless sleuth. They are charming but I think I’ll be sticking, for the most part, to her full length cases.

More of a 2.5 but I’ll give it a break. What has happened to the amazing chocolate Turkey the girls want to win for Thanksgiving? Nancy, George and Bess investigate. There is a pause in the book summing up the clews before the big reveal. Very formulaic but that has its place, particularly for this age group. However, I prefer the Cam Jansen mystery books for this age group.

In the Turkey Trot Plot, Nancy, Bess, and George are back for another fun and interactive mystery, this time involving a missing giant chocolate turkey. As they race in River Heights's Turkey Trot, hoping to win a costume contest, things turn when the prized chocolate turkey goes missing, and Anna Epicure, the owner of a fancy new chocolate shop, accuses the kids and bans them from her store.

While the mystery is cute and engaging, I found Anna's behavior toward the kids unnecessarily unpleasant, especially when she blames them without proof. Additionally, the way the Clue Crew interrogates suspects felt more deceptive and aggressive than in other Nancy Drew books, which made it a bit uncomfortable. The excessive access to chocolate by the kids' parents also felt unrealistic and over the top.

While the book offers a lighthearted mystery, it's important to note that it's designed for younger series fans who enjoy a good, sweet mystery. Despite some characters' behavior that may not be to everyone's liking, the book remains a fun and engaging read for its target audience.

A Thanksgiving addition to a sweet series of books. I grew up reading Nancy Drew books and I’m delighted by this new series for younger readers. Nancy and her best pals team up in this one to solve the mystery of a missing chocolate turkey. The format is similar to the original series and that repetition from book to book is comforting to readers. As with all Nancy Drew mysteries, it is fun for the reader to try to figure out the mystery as they read. That is highly encouraged here. There is even a pause in the book before the last chapter to give the reader time to puzzle over the clues. I love that this book and the rest of the series not only offer Nancy Drew and mysteries to a new generation but that it does so in a fun, light hearted, relatable way. Everyone will want to form their own Clue Crew after reading this.
