Ava McFeely is still grieving the loss of her mother to suicide. She's started a charity in her mother's name. But not all runs smoothly. A local politician wants to raise the railings of a bridge which is where most suicides occur in this little town of Derry. It's the same bridge from which Ava's mother jumped.
Ava's idea is to deal with mental health issues and give people other options rather than suicide. Once she goes public, strange things begin to happen.
First it'a a pair of expensive shoes, hand delivered to her home. Then it's an old newspaper with her mother's picture and a lily ... her mother's favorite flower. An old family toy that had been at her sister's shows up in her own home. Things are moved around and Ava has the feeling that someone is watching her.
Her sister is an alcoholic who most of the time doesn't know what's going on around her. And when Ava tells her boyfriend, Mark, about what she thinks are threats, he doesn't believe her. So where is she to turn? Who should she trust? Why would anyone be targeting her?
The author has done a fine job of addressing the issue of suicide and mental health problems and how it affects the family and friends of those who feel they have no reason to go on.
The characters are finely drawn and somewhat credible. I can't say I liked all the characters, but I feel they were written that way deliberately. It's not highly suspenseful but there's enough mystery to keep a reader turning pages.
Many thanks to the author / TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the advanced digital copy of IN TOO DEEP. Opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
IN TOO DEEP by Bradd Chambers is a thriller. This novel is set in his hometown of Derry City, Northern Ireland and is based on the rising rate of suicide in the city.
Ava McFeely is still coming to terms with her mother's suicide, where she jumped from the Foyle Bridge to her death. Ava has devoted her life to treating the mental health epidemic infecting Derry City. In her mother’s honor, Eva setup up a charity, to raise awareness and deal directly with solutions for the mentally ill, instead of at the last resort…suicide.
But then shortly after Ava starts to receive anonymous presents and messages…But why? And Who?
Ava feels someone is watching her.
She is losing control of her life, but can she get it back?
Her boyfriend, Mark and her alcoholic sister don’t believe that strange things are happening around her. Who can she turn too?
I give credit to the author for addressing a sensitive but needed topic…the issue of suicide and mental health. The characters are true and believable. We all need to step up to the plate and spread love and understanding, to acknowledge that it is okay to feel this way, and offer the victims the help that they need to recover to deal with their mental health issues.
AND BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, YOU'RE IN TOO DEEP
Many thanks to the author, and TBC Reviewer Request Group (FB) for the advanced digital copy.
This is the first book I've read by Bradd but wont be the last. It was well written with solid believable characters. It tackles issues such as suicide and mental health issues in a very real way. I read this book in just one sitting as I was enthralled with the main characters and couldn't put it down. I would thoroughly recommend this book to everyone.I feel very fortunate to have been able to read and review it
This was an interesting read. I don't know what I expected from the book, but after the initial first half of the book where it focused on Ava and how she was dealing with the aftermath of her mum's suicide and getting on with her life, the book took a turn towards the end which I just wasn't expecting. I can't say I liked each character in the story, but I feel that was intentional to advance the story. All over an enjoyable read.
I got this as a e book from the tbc review facebook page that I am a member of. I enjoyed reading it. It had a good story to it. I liked the variety of characters in it. It is my first book read by this author. I hope to read more books by this author.
Have read the book Fantastic couldn't stop my husband had to force me to stop to go to bed The characters are amazing and I kept wanting to shout at them when they were being stupid The story was amazing and kept me hooked it was believable I didn't want it to end but I did to find out what happened in the end Just fantastic well done😀
3.5 stars . Overall an enjoyable read centring around Ava and her past loss .strange things start to happen and Ava fears someone is out for her .. I did enjoy this but found the story was let down with the conclusion. My thanks to tbc reviewers for my opportunity to read
Ava is struggling with the aftermath of her mothers suicide and channels her energies into trying to raise mental health awareness and help around the town she lives in by starting a charity to raise funds to provide much needed help. However ,weird things start happening to Ava, mysterious presents, the feeling of being watched, things being moved around in her home...all unexplained and no-one really taken very seriously by her boyfriend Mark, at least to start with. However, jealousy rears its ugly head as Ava finds Cathal, a journalist, to offload to and tension grows between Ava and Mark as a result. There are a wealth of very well written characters in this story, from the alcoholic Aunt, the "do we trust him" boyfriend and the myriad of other background players all are believable, all have their many and varied issues and all those issues are sympathetically written about. The twists and turns from around midpoint through the novel kept me guessing until the big reveal- just how it should be! All in all an excellent read!
I loved all the suspense that constantly kept you guessing. As soon as you think you have it figured out then BOOM along comes another surprise to knock you off your feet and make you think again. This is the first book that I have ever read by this author but most certainly will not be the last. I immediately want to read the rest of his work.
Anything with mental health interests me and it is a subject that hits close to home. There should be more books that bring attention to this field that will raise awareness like this book does. Not only that but there is also the thriller side to it. I loved the characters and the storyline grabbed right from the very first page.
I kept telling myself just one more page, just one more chapter and then I will stop. Believe me, you will not realise that you have read the entire thing until you have come to the end and time seems to have passed you by.
This book starts off gently and sensitively dealing with the harrowing life of a young girl who has lost her mother, to mental health issues and suicide and who has the unsettling feeling that she is being followed and tormented by someone who must know her well. The mental health issues are dealt with with great insight and respect and are really well written. Suddenly the book ups its pace and took me quite by surprise as we start to delve into criminal underworlds and complex family and relationships to the point where it is really gripping, edge of the seat stuff with a few shocks and surprises thrown in. I really liked the ending and the feeling that lots of pieces of a jigsaw were coming together and the author wasn’t afraid to shock. A slow burner to start with but definitely recommend.
A thoroughly enjoyable story. The first I've read of this author and someone I will be looking out for for new releases. The story follows Ava who is trying to come to terms with her mother's suicide 6 years after it happened. She has set up a charity in her name, and is busy trying to make that work and get people support rather than putting railings up over the bridge her mother jumped from. Ava then starts getting strange packages and the feeling she's being stalked. She has a hard time getting anyone to believe her. Then her aunt falls ill after accidentally overdosing and things start to unravel. A great tense psychological thriller that will keep you guessing til the end.
Bradd Chambers’ new novel, In Too Deep, is a pacy thriller set in the city of Derry and tells the story of a young woman, Ava. Ava is living with the legacy of suicide and is doing her best to hold her life together while making a difference in the local community, despite interference from a local politician. Add to this already tense situation, an unsettling, anonymous gift left for Ava outside her house and you have all the ingredients for a cracking thriller which does not disappoint. The novel is written mainly in the present tense and once you get used to it, this adds to the pace and immediacy of events as they unfold. The details of setting and place in the novel, descriptions of the river Foyle, underscore that the book’s writer is a local Derry man, who not only captures a distinct sense of place but also the cadence of the city’s language and accent in the characters’ dialogue. These interesting and vivid characters come alive and there are many twists and turns which lead to an unforeseen dénouement which left me wanting more! Looking forward to In Too Deep 2!
I received a copy of this book from TBC Reviewers request- Thank you
Mental health issues are often not discussed in novels or when they are they end up being marginalised almost an after thought as to why a character behaves badly or commits a crime. In this Novel Bradd sensitively deals with both suicide and alcoholism and the affects it has on family that remain. Bradd has a skilled method writing that really made me as the reader question myu thought processes around these issues A skilled read- thank you
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. I was gripped from the first chapter and just could not put it down. The plot was clever and every twist had me hooked. The book has a large focus on mental health and suicide, particularly in Londonderry, with the main character running a charity and running campaigns to help raise money and awareness to help prevent of suicide. Massive praise for Bradd for writing about such a difficult subject and for helping to raise awareness himself.
From the off, we meet a very engrossing main character. Ava is dealing with the suicide of her mother, following which she has set up a charity promoting suicide and mental health awareness. Along the way she demonstrates her own issues and insecurities - this made her feel very real: a strong but wounded woman dealing with real issues.
I don’t want to spoil anything but the book full of twists and, although dark in places, is a very clever piece of writing - the ending blew me away!
First book I've read from Bradd and wow what an introduction. The topic is hard hitting but he does it sensitively you care about Ava and what she is going through with her family. The twists come thick and fast im emotionally shattered I finished it in 2 days. I've now got Bradd's first book on my tbr I can't wait to read more.
Ava McFeely is passionate about mental health issues and suicide prevention, having set up a charity following her mum’s suicide. Although still struggling following her mum’s death, things mostly seem to be going well until a surprise package turns up on Ava’s doorstep. Then things start to get odd then start to turn more sinister and Ava become less and less sure of whom she can trust, and her life and relationship start to unravel.
A cleverly written thriller that deals with the mental health issues in a real but sensitive manner. The characters were well written and believable and the story kept me gripped throughout. Definitely well worth a read.
A taut thriller with lots of twists and turns. Ava is recovering after her mother kills herself, she sets up a charity to help prevent suicides. Some mysterious events happen and all is not as it seems.
This story keeps you involved right to the end with an unexpected ending.
Well written, would reccomend to others and look forward to reading more from this author.
Well.. I like the way this book is narrated by the two main characters and how it draws you in and had me guessing all the way along .. I was on the edge of my seat at one point but no spoilers here excellent book and I feel totally like I know the characters inside and out and empathise with a family disjointed by lies but drawn together too Excellent book no hesitation five stars 🌟
I was given this book to review through the TBC group. I enjoyed it alot. It deals with issues of mental illness and suicide. It was a great read,a well written book, and gripping. I would read more books by the author .
In too deep by Brad Chambers. This was a very good read. I liked Ava character. Wasnt sure about Mark. Didn't like how he was with Ava. I found it a little slow at the beginning but the ending was really good. Looking forward to the next book. 4*.
My first book by this author and I wasn’t disappointed.
The book in set in Derry (Londonderry) in Northern Ireland. Ava McFeely runs a charity to help prevent suicide. Her mother committed suicide, in front of her sister Robyn, 3 years ago when Ava was just 17.
Ava has a partner, who is wealthy and some years older than her and her life seems happy until she takes on a local politician who wants to put safety nets and barriers around the bridge her mother jumped to her death from. When Ava starts receiving mysterious gifts and notes she believes her life may be in danger.
There were enough twists and turns to keep me interested and the protagonist didn’t become clear to me until nearing the end of the book. I thought this was a well written and thought out book and I will certainly be reading book 2 in the series.
Really good book. First book I’ve read by this author and is a great twisty turny story. Interesting characters and did not see the end coming which is always good.
An interesting tale that incorporates the taboos of suicide and mental health. Brand develops the story in a sensitive and unpredictable manner. His characters are well developed and believable. He keeps you guessing right till the end. I would definitely recommend it Thank you to TBC Reviewer group for my copy.
An enjoyable read, twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. I must say I didn't know weather I'd actually like this book when I commented on the TBC reviews post but I'm so glad I was given the chance to read it. Bradd is a fantastic story teller with a great eye for detail. I highly recommend this book and will be looking out for more books by Bradd. Great character development, great story line and a great page turner.
Thank you to Bradd and TBC reviews for the chance to read this book

I am absolutely in awe. The book was absolutely fantastic. I could not put it down and it was read in the space of 48 hours which for me is extremely unusual and therefore speaks volumes.
I was hooked from the first chapter and gripped until the last word. Absolutely brilliant writing and I feel like I have lived and breathed the characters, finding myself thinking about it when I wasn't reading it and itching to read more.
The characters were amazing and the style of writing really helped me get a sense of who they were. Even the irish lingo made me warm to them more, being able to somehow imagine them and this can sometimes be distracting I find but not in this case at all.
Comparing the stories of Robyn and Ava was genius. To be able to see both sides of the story and as it unfolded the drama was even more profound as we didn't know what was happening at the house and with Ava. The pace was fast but clever and completely believable. The ending was a complete mixture of emotions, sadness for Mark, an element of karma for Emmet and the total shock and horror of the twist at the end with Cathal. The apple does not fall far from the tree and a real twist that makes you wonder if you ever really know someone and what they are capable of. Appearances really are deceiving. Also I cannot stop thinking about how a difficult situation and a momentously bad decision affected so many lives so severely. Ava, Mark, Cathal, Damien, Robyn, Fiona, all profoundly affected by the faked death of Fiona and the impact therein after. Lives changed forever, in some cases lost.
My heart went out to Ava and to Robyn for their stories and to learn of Damien's departure was truly sad. Also a stark reminder as throughout the book that in desperate times people take desperate measures which is something we really need to address and provide more support. I was quite moved by how at the beginning of the book Ava chose to turn tragedy into something positive and her work with the charity should give us all food for thought that you can help and you can change things, even when you yourself have been through the darkest of times.
The book has left me with a lot of thoughts. Despite thoroughly enjoying this book (plus being sad it has ended) it does make you think about how things in life affect people and as you say in the note at the end we all need to stand together to help people. How sad to think of the number of lives lost on the bridge. Mental health is becoming less stigmatised but there is still such a very long way to go. We need greater support networks and we need to make it more acceptable to talk and not take drastic action and all try and help each other. I think it also deals very sensitively with the affects on others and their lives.
A wonderful book, enjoyed every second. A fabulous writer whose strength and determination comes through in this book. Unputdownable for sure and a must read.
In Too Deep: A Psychological Thriller By Bradd Chambers 5 out of 5 stars
The book In Too Deep: A Psychological Thriller by Bradd Chambers is a suspense/thriller that had me hooked me in from the very beginning. It is a story that has danger, mystery, suspense, and wonderful characters. The book has twists and turns to it that I didn’t see coming. I loved the character of Ava McFeely. She is a young woman who is deeply affected when her mother commits suicide. That one act causes her to start a charity to help others. Ava is intelligent, kind, and fiercely determined to help others before they take the same step as her mother. When she begins to make waves in the local community, she believes that the items that she is receiving are someone with dark intent. Who is sending Ava these items? Is Ava in danger? Read this book to find out. This story is an emotional one. The author does a good job of bringing attention to the issues of suicide and the mental health issues that plague those who commit it. Ava is an empathetic character that I couldn’t help but want the best for. I wanted her to find happiness. There are additional characters that are introduced. Many of them are friends and family of Ava’s and help and support her. Some have cruel agendas. This is a book with moments of sadness and also moments that touched my heart. The story also had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. Don’t miss a book that will not let you go until the final page. I highly recommend reading it.
