The pushy all-knowing Dom + baby sub who knows nothing about kink combo is getting rather tired in this series. Quint was way more pushy than he should be as a Fettered employee. No one is that clairvoyant when it comes to knowing someone else’s kinks. Regardless you need to build up trust with someone you’re playing with and he did no such thing with Meghan. Why couldn’t he introduce her to BDSM without it leading to sex? Their scenes were on hyperspeed when they shouldn’t have been and I was really concerned that Meghan wasn’t actually learning the lessons she needed to learn about the dangers of being a people pleaser who ignores her own needs in the kink world. Quint was right to be worried that she wouldn’t be able to advocate for herself or safeword as needed and that this would put her at risk of being abused. But he also victim-blamed—she would not be responsible if someone took advantage of her, no matter what. He also conflated wetness with consent when arousal non-concordance exists. I was never convinced Meghan was as interested in BDSM as the story wanted me to believe and that all comes down to how Quint handled things.
This is an incredibly white heteronormative world. While Quint takes great pains to say everyone is welcome at Fettered, the only queer characters in this world are Sam and Leo and we never get to see them playing. Where are the other LGBTQ kinksters in Seattle? I don’t have any issue with an author writing only MF pairings but there’s no excuse to not have diverse secondary characters. This should still be an inclusive world. The interpretation of kink missed the mark with its regular insistence that p-in-v sex is the only “real” sex and only showing dominant men with submissive women. True, Ari is a switch but we don’t ever get to see her dominate (and I’m guessing she’ll be on the submissive side when we finally get her book). Lastly, I’m annoyed by the lack of boundaries between the Fettered staff and wedding planning crew. They need to butt out of each other’s business unless they’ve been given express consent to do otherwise.
*This technically qualifies for *Love it or Leighve it* (aka cleaning out my Kindle) because I bought the whole series when it was free a few years ago. I’d already read and loved the first book at that point. Unfortunately, the rest of the series hasn’t worked as well as the author’s other work. But I’ll keep chipping away at it until I’m done because at the very least I’ll get hot BDSM scenes.
