Cornelius a Lapide was born in Belgium. He studied humanities and philosophy at the Jesuit colleges of Maastricht and Cologne.
He enrolled in the Society of Jesus in 1592, and, after two years' novitiate and another year of theology he was ordained as a priest in 1595. He taught philosophy and then was appointed to be a professor of Scripture at Leuven in 1596 and then of Hebrew. In 1616, he was called to Rome to teach. The latter years of his life, he devoted to finishing and correcting his commentaries. He died at Rome.

Cornelius a Lapide commentaries cover all the books of the Bible, excluding Job and the Psalms. However only the books present in this volume were translated into English.

Only read commentariy on Genesis 1-3 but they're great. Bursting with historical information, delves into history of interpretations, and artful descriptions and analysis of an antique view of cosmogony
