I ran across this new author recently and didn't know if I could read this series due to the themes it deals with. In the end, after reading this book I felt more knowledgeable about abuse and more understanding of sex and sexuality. This is a review on my thoughts of the series. Please note that this book doesn't hold back on describing the sexual violence that Rafael experienced and it can be triggering for anyone who has had experience with sexual assault.

When we first meet the hero Rafael Ortiz he's a nineteen year old boy who has been living on the streets of Miami refusing to go back home to his mother and stepfather. His sister through the help of a private investigator finds him and convinces him to move to Atlanta and live with her. This is where Rafael's life completely changes. Once moving to Atlanta he enrolls back into high school where he meets Akilah, a sixteen-year-old emancipated teen living on her own.

This story is drastically different from your standard romance series. While the central focus of the book is the healing power of finding your soulmate and falling in love but how do you stay in love and healthy when the two people are imperfectly flawed by life. Each book focuses on different stages of Akilah and Rafael's life.

In the first book, both Akilah and Rafael are two high school students who are falling in love and decide to get married. This book lays the foundation for the reader to get an in-depth knowledge of the mental and physical abuse Rafael experienced and the long-term physical and psychological impact it has on him and his relationships.

In the Second book, Rafael and Akilah have been married for almost two years are about to graduate high school and receive an unexpected surprise. Rafael and Akilah at this point realize that they may have been too young to get married but don't want to be apart.

This final book Rafael and Akilah's past come back to haunt them due to Rafael becoming a social media star due to his work in the community helping young people.

There are so many things I appreciate about what the author did with this series and the characters. This series was Rafael's story so it's told completely from his point of view, which I appreciated.
The character of Akilah was a mature teen who grows up through her experiences and marriage to Rafael. She's a heroine that's not judgemental, doesn't throw Rafael's past in his face. When she asked him about his abuse or needs clarity she's straight to the point and Rafael is open and honest with her. There are many points in this story where Akilah should walk away due to his past but she loves him fiercely.

Rafael is different as well because he's a different type of alpha due to the scars of his abuse but he doesn't run from his past. I even appreciated their circle of friends and family who never judged Rafael for his choices that he had to make while living on the streets. He asked this question to Akilah "Have you ever been hungry? And when I say that, not your ate breakfast the day before and then didn't eat until dinner the next day because you were busy, but like a hungry where your body is literally starting to eat itself because you haven't eaten in days."

I love that this author didn't turn this story into a soap opera and explored how sex isn't always about attraction and sexuality but can be a means of control and survival for sexual survivors. Hopefully, more people will read this series and it can generate a discussion.

Overall, this series was a five-star read. The series does have some editing errors in the first two books but they don't distract from the overall story. I will say the epilogue was really sweet. Hopefully, the author does a novella to catch up with Rafael now that he's living the life he feared he wasn't capable of having as a nineteen-year-old. Zenobia and Anthony now need their story's told.

Teen age angst

Is not what this is about. This series a a testimony to you got to hit bottom to rise. I haven’t been moved by many of these online novels but this is a well thought out story of two damaged people who find each other. Rafe is in a difficult situation & trust with his caretakers is lost. It is his narrative that takes us through this story.

It’s a romance with life lessons. It is mature content but young adults could use its message. Life is a bitch. Sears professional help
