Shoot Your Shot
Shooting your shot takes bravery. Shooting your shot takes gumption. Shooting your shot takes the willingness to be embarrassed by the response if it does not go your way. But above all, it takes confidence and the ability to believe in oneself. The novel Shoot Your Shot, by Vernon Brundage Jr., is an intriguing combination of life lessons and basketball. The novel teaches the most important life lessons, while also entertaining the reader with the topic of basketball. This novel is also extremely easy to relate to for many people. Even if the reader does not play basketball, they can relate to the book on some level. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone. One does not have to be a fan of basketball to like this book. To sum it up, the book is entertaining and is very personal; and nothing keeps your attention more than something that directly relates to you.
To begin, this novel explains many different, and important life lessons. The first lesson that is explained is that of believing in yourself. For instance, if you think you are going to miss the shot even before you take it, then you probably will. But, if you stay confident and trust your skills, the outcome will be much better. The other life lessons were just as important. These lessons were explained thoroughly. Each of these lessons were then connected to some aspect of basketball. Although I liked many aspects of the book, there were some components that I did not like. I was not a fan of the overall structure of the book. It seemed to be more of a list than an actual novel at times. I found myself reading this “list” and losing interest. Additionally, I think it would be very beneficial if there were photographs throughout the book. Previously I had read “Mamba Mentality” by Kobe Bryant, and there were many photographs throughout this novel. I enjoyed how there were visual representations about what was taking place in the novel, and I think this particular novel could benefit from the addition of visuals.
All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in morals. I would also recommend this to anyone who would like to improve their view and outlook on life.
