About the author

Françoise Chandernagore is a recognized French writer, member of the Académie Goncourt since 1995. After graduating from the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and obtaining a master of public law she entered at the age of twenty-one years at the prestigeous École Nationale d'administration (ENA), from which she graduated two years later as a first of her year. She was the first woman to receive this rank. As a former student of the École Nationale d'Administration, she became a member of the State Council (Conseil d'Etat)in 1969.

Since 1981, when she published "L'Allée du Roi" which has earned international recognition immediately (imaginary memoirs of Madame de Maintenon, the second wife of Louis XIV), Françoise Chandernagore wrote nine novels and a theater play (played in Brussels from 1993 to 1994 and in Paris in 1994-1995). Several of her novels have been translated into fifteen languages​​, and two of them have been television adaptations.

In 2011, Françoise Chandernagore won the Grand Prix du Roman Palatine of Historical Novels for her novel "Children of Alexandria."
Françoise Chandernagore is a member of the "Prix Jean Giono", the "Prix Chateaubriand", and the Académie Goncourt (since June 1995). She is Vice-President of the Association "Freedom for history."

Commander of the National Order of Merit in April 2007 she was promoted to Officer of the Legion of Honor.

كيف تختلف حقيقتنا عن الطريقة التي يرانا بها الآخرون
بين أربع شقيقات وأم تدور رواية الكاتبة الفرنسية فرانسواز شاندرناجور
في الأيام الأخيرة من حياة الأم تبدأ الشقيقة الكبرى الحكي عن العائلة
سرد يعرض العلاقات الأُسرية المعقدة ويكشف المشاعر والأسرار المختبئة
استعادة الذكريات الجميلة وأيضا الجروح التي لم تلتئم برغم مرور السنين
حياة أربع نساء مختلفات في كل شيء, كل منهن ترى أمها بطريقة مختلفة
الأم القوية المهيمنة على حياة بناتها بحب يخفي أحيانا القسوة والإساءة
كل شخص يحب المقربين بطريقته التي قد لا تلائم مشاعرهم واحتياجاتهم

بذائقتي من كأس الفقد، دائماً أقول: ألم الفقد لا يشاركك فيه إنسان، لا يعرف من فقدت وماذا فقدت حتى شقيقك في الفقد.
وكذلك ألم الحياة وكل ألم.

لحكاية الفقيد مع كل منا خصوصية، هو مع كل منا كأنه شخص آخر، صحيح هناك ما يجمع قطع الحكاية/الشخصية في صورة واحدة هي تصوُّرنا الكلي عنه، لكنها لا تجمعه هو، ولا تجمع حكايته كلها ولا تلتقط كل تفاصيل جماله، نحن حتى نجهل الكثير عن أنفسنا ولا نحيط بالحكايا التي كنا أبطالها بكامل الوعي والفكر والقلب، وبالتأكيد نجهل عن غيرنا من المقربين أكثر مما نعرفه.


الرواية باختصار محاولة لإجابة السؤال ..
- "ما الذي نعلمه عن المقرّبين؟"

ما الذي تعلمه الشقيقات عن أمهن وعن بعضهن؟
ما الذي تعرفه عن أمهن وعما دار ويدور حولها وحولهن؟
هل هذه المعرفة قبل مرضها هي نفسها خلال احتضارها وانسلال الحياة ورطوبتها من جسدها الجميل الأنيق الشامخ؟ هل ما تشاركنها من معرفة قبل الموت هي نفسها ما كانت بعد الرحيل؟

نحن كلما مشينا في دروب الحياة .. كشفت لنا الحياة من أنفسنا ومن المقربين معرفة أكثر .. وعندما يموت واحدنا .. نتشارك عنه -بتلقائية- كل معارفنا التي حصدناها وذكرياتنا .. ربما هي محاولة من محاولات البقاء؟ بقاؤهم أم بقاء الجزء الذي كان منا فيهم؟ هل نخاف نسيانهم .. أم نسيان أجزاء أنفسنا تلك التي كانت قائمة بوجودهم ولوجودهم؟؟ هل نسرد عنّا أم عنهم؟ وإن كان سردنا عنهم -هم من يملكون مفتاح الحكاية- هل تنغلق الحكاية؟ وهل نموت ولم نفرغ من كل ما وددنا قوله؟ كيف يمكننا الموت ونحن لدينا ما نسرده ولم نسرده بعد؟ لدينا معرفتنا .. حكايتنا وحكايا الراحلين .. كيف نموت ولم نخبر بكل شيء؟ هذا هو السؤال الآمِل الذي به أغلقت الرواية بلا نهاية ..

في هذه الرواية أو السيرة .. تناوبت السردية بين الأربع شقيقات .. حول أمهن المحتضرة التي تموت في ثنايا الحكاية. الرواية جميلة رقيقة تلامس القلب، ما تناولته من الحياة والموت يلامس كل شخص، ولقد تعمقت الكاتبة ونجحت في إبراز الملامح النفسية والأبعاد التفصيلية لكل شخصية من شخصياتها. السردية تصويرية عبقرية بالعرض البانورامي الذي تعطيه لكل شخصية من هذه الخمسة وما يدور حولهن وبهن في الحياة، هكذا يتم غزل الحكايا من قطع الحكايا، كل حكاية/شخصية/شعور هنا هي بالضرورة ٤ حكايا/شخصيات/مشاعر وأكثر، الأم الفقيدة هي أربع أمهات .. أم لكل واحدة من بناتها الأربع .. تحس بفقدها في الرواية ٤ مرات .. في كل مرة مع كل شقيقة منهن كأنه فقدٌ آخر ..

نفس الحدث كل منا يحياه بشكل منفصل مهما اتصل .. نفس خيط الأحداث وحبل المشاعر يلفّ كل منا في سياق مختلف مهما اتفق .. نحن فرادى في سفر الحياة والموت كما تتجلى وحدتنا ورؤانا كل ليل .. فرادى في هذا السفر لا يحيا أحد عن أحد ولا يموت أحد مع أحد .. فرادى مهما كان القرب والحب .. فرادى ولو غرقنا معاً ولو نجونا يداً بيد.

Je ne connaissais pas Françoise Chandernagor, spécialiste du roman historique. Ce livre-ci est en partie autobiographique et j'ai été attirée par le sujet: quatre soeurs réunies autour d'une mère mourante. C'est particulièrement réaliste. J'ai été impressionnée par la capacité de l'autrice à parler de choses souvent indicibles dans une telle situation. C'est aussi extrêmement touchant. J'ai par contre eu l'impression qu'elle ne savait pas comment conclure son histoire. À la fin, ça s'éternise et on s'enlise un peu trop dans une forme de fiction plus conventionnelle. Je mets 4 étoiles pour les deux premiers tiers du livre seulement.

I've read this brilliant novel like three years ago... Just adored it...

Proposed to the Egyptian National Center for Translation to translate it into Arabic... It took them two years
to approve it and i've just signed the contract and started the job a few days ago...

I'm enjoying it thouroughly, a lot more than the regular reading, as the translation makes me closer to the narrative and more receptive of the beauties of the novelist's language and style...

Katia, Vera, Sonia and Lisa surround and watch over their mother Olga, who is confined to bed, dying. How do you cope with your mother, who is in a physically worsening condition and mentally still going strong – she rules and reigns. Olga rejects the (necessity of the) care of her daughters. The four sisters all have a different position towards their mother, have a different history with her, think of her very differently. Yet, the four of them get a sort of closer to eachother, but in the process some sharp edges pop up, with roots in the past. And Olga herself must have been a strong woman while having a position in the resistance during World War II. Olga has a remarkable family background. So one can imagine there is a wide variety of emotions present in the developments of their relations. How can you let your mother with such ‘woman power’ dy dignified; how do they cope with surfacing family secrets. These are some of the main themes.
The author has very precisely phrased all the matters that come by the reader’s mind, all the motives and emotions. The way in which she let the characters express themselves, often is pretty harsh. On the whole the novel has a rich psychological depth with many nuances. JM
