Gérard Noiriel is a French historian. He is one of the pioneers of immigration history in France. He has also focused on the history of the working class, as well as on interdisciplinary and epistemological questions in history. In this regard, he contributed to the development of socio-historical studies and was involved in founding the journal Genèses. He is a director of studies at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS).
This book is really a tool to help you see things in a different perspective. From now on, I will now what the meaning of the words "étranger," "immigré" and "français" carry within themselves. Because this book helped me to understand what historical meaning lies behind the words we use in our everyday life and, hence, because it helped realize how our thoughts are shaped by the past, I think it is a must-read for anyone interested to know where the "immigration problem" came from.
