Through story, reflection, and poetry, Joanna weaves us through a thirty-year spiritual evolution of her life; what Richard Rohr describes as “order, disorder, and reorder.” This short, easy-to-read book is a perfect addition to your coffee table collection. While acknowledging the universal suffering we all endure over time, she also inspires and encourages, embodying the best of what humanity can be. It is a sheer delight for reading and reflection.
I took time and care in reading this book because it is written by a close friend who I love and respect very much, both as a person but more importantly as a person of faith. Smith has been a seminary colleague, my reiki provider, part of Team Toby (who cares for my little dog), and a friend throughout the last 10 years. I am so proud of the inner work she has done to create the poetry and prose in this book. I’m even more proud of the risk she has taken in pursing publication.
There were parts of her poetry I could identify closely with, and others that were not as easy for me feel connected to. I appreciated her thoughts captured in prose between the poems.
The book concludes with a quote from Tanaaz: “Life is not to break us down. Life is not to hurt us. We are here to grow. We are here to learn. We are here to have an adventure.” I love this quote and will return to it as a mantra for my own life.
